Would you consider jaywalking a sin?

Been wondering often. especially:

a) crossing against the light if there is hardly any traffic
b) crossing in the middle of the block

In general, I’d say it was a venial sin because we are to follow the laws of the government (Rom 13) as long as they don’t contradict God’s laws. However, everything would depend upon the intent of the person involved. If his/her intent were simply to get to the other side (like the chicken), then yes, it would only be a venial sin. If the intent were to place himself/herself in danger of causing injury or death, then that would be a mortal sin.

In most places pedestrians crossing in the middle if the block isn’t even a misdemeanor, let alone a sin. If the government doesn’t see a problem with it and no moral issue applies, why should it be sinful? Just look both ways.

(I am presuming you are not a child whose mother has forbidden you to cross in the middle of the block.)

😉 If I may ask - do you do it?
Usually, no. Have I done it? on occassion. My intent has never been to cause harm though. I live in the city; so, even using a crosswalk can prove to be dangerous  .

I do it almost every day…to get my mail, as our mailbox is on the opposite side of the street. No, I don’t consider it a sin.

I guess I would consider it a sin to jaywalk if you are putting yourself or others in danger. For example, I have seen people take their child by the hand and jaywalk across a 4-lane road, shooting the gap between groups of cars. This is dangerous, irresponsible and a poor example to their child. It is usually done about a 1/2 block from the street lights and crosswalk. 😦

I surely don’t consider it a sin. I live in a suburban city and I never worry about crossing at intersections. If I lived in a large city (or when I visit) where safety dictated the need to only cross at lighted intersections, then I would do so.

Absolutely not and I am very passionate about the issue about man made laws that are not against God’s laws not being sinful. I am not going to restart the debate in this thread but it is ongoing in the driving fast thread.

No sin. But if you try it in certain parts of certain cities, it could be life threatening.

On the other hand, I’ve been told that in many European cities, it is expected, and if you look both ways and try to avoid traffic, you will throw off the drivers and be more apt to get hit. So the rule there is–don’t ever look, just walk across.

I also try to not do it when children are watching. I think that is important.🙂

No, as long as you are not endangering anyone’s safety, including your own. If there is adequate time to make it across without causing anyone to slow down or brake, go for it! The closest intersection to my house has the lights timed so poorly that if I were to wait for the “walk” light with enough time to cross all 5 lanes of traffic, I’d be standing there until 9 p.m. until the traffic dies down. That’s just stupid, IMHO. If/when they adjust the walk-light, I’ll obey. Until then, I’ll jaywalk half a block up the street where it’s safer and faster to cross over.

a) No. In my experience, many lights take forever to switch to “walk”.

b) No. Is that even illegal? Of course, if you put yourself or others at risk or disrupt traffic, it’s wrong.

😃 I have never even thought about some of the ‘sins’ until I started going on this website. Scrupulous beware! I don’t think none of them is a sin, unless you are deliberately trying to scare or annoy the drivers. Or if u are forcing children into something dangerous.

Put it this way, if these are the worst sins that you commit, you are living saintly dare I say.

Now this made me chuckle. I could hardly imagine doing that!

But I know, people do weird things sometimes. Around here some kids or whoever removed a manhole cover and buried it in the sand. A little child fell into the hole! Fortunately no serious injuries. But just the thought of it!

What if one jaywalks in the middle of the night with no cars around for miles? 😃

Depends where you are. In DCthe police jaywalk. In Glendale , CA its against the law and they enforce it. Acouple of years ago I was leading the police chief of Glendale around Capitol Hill and got him to jaywalk once, but he would never do it again. I tried.
