Would you convert if EO and RCC were in full communion?

(that was the problem for the CoE at that time,
A few weeks ago I had to ask for an explanation of someone’s post, which mentioned CoE, but the thread wasn’t related to the Church of the East.

Just now I had the opposite problem (but more fleetingly): for a second I thought you were talking about the Church of England.

😃

The term is used specifically in regards to the claim that the office of the papacy has
universal jurisdiction, and that salvation hinges on being in communion with the Bishop
of Rome, so it wouldn’t apply to Orthodoxy. I think Tomster’s question is whether some Lutherans would reject unity because of the inclusion of the Bishop of Rome.

Jon
He said “a merging of the forces of antichrist”, which to me sounds like saying (incorrectly) that some Lutherans apply “antichrist” to the Orthodox as well as Catholics.

Hmm, I would’ve thought the fact that I wrote “Persian/East Syrian Church” earlier in the same sentence would’ve prevented that kind of confusion. Oops. Sorry. I would just as soon use “Nestorian” or “ACoE”, but they make people upset (and for ACoE, I understand, as “Assyrian” in the modern day has some very specific political/nationalist connotations that don’t really hold for all the people who historically were in that Church, i.e., I’ve never met a Syro-Malabar person who talked longingly about “Beth Nahrain” as the Assyrians do).

From ^^ it sounds like you have a different definition of “fleetingly” (or maybe a different kind of sense of humor :)).

Maybe. I read it the other way. Either way, you are right, for the reasons I mentioned. I’ve never heard the term applied to Orthodoxy.

What are your views of the Orthodox Church? I never really hear non Catholics speak about the Orthodox Church. Usually Catholics are in the line of fire.

No, since I don’t believe either church is correct on a number things. I mean, if either of them were right, I would convert now. I don’t see what them reunifying would do. Protestantism did not break from Rome because Rome and the EO were disunified.
I like your post; I have heard non Catholics say if only the EO and the RCC were unified
that would be IT for me. I would join in a heatbeat.

I really wonder if that would truly happen for as you say I don’t believe that is why Protestants broke from Rome.

Ok Dustin lol. No, of course I didn’t start with the history of the Reformation
Aha, we finally got it out of him his name…Dustin. LOL 🙂
Now hmmm back to the topic,
GB I really appreciate your posts. I like your to the point writing style.

Oh, I almost forgot number three! Could we keep our Lutheran hymns and liturgies? 😊 Nothing beats the LSB’s Order of Matins when the pastor can hold a tune! 😃
Sure! If they ask me the Lutheran hymns can be added in…:tiphat:
The Liturgy that’s another story…

Good question. 🙂 (I’m assuming that when you say “non Catholics” you mean protestants.) I think we’ve had some good conversations on that topic, but I don’t know if I could find them.

Yeah Protestants. I always heard people bad mouthing Catholics growing up, but never once heard anyone say anything about the Orthodox Church. I guess many just do not think about them much? 🤷

I would think that for most low church Evangelical types and those heavily influenced by such thinking, they probably consider the Orthodox (if they consider/know about their existence at all) to be funny Roman Catholics, and hence would probably think that they are killing two birds with one stone by condemning Roman Catholics. Some of us do have a Pope, after all, and that’s generally enough (well, plus the doctrines we do actually share with the Romans) to get us placed into the same category, despite our vastly different approaches to theology, ecclesiology, and basically everything else. 🤷

I believe it is simply a lack of understanding on their part on Orthodoxy. Many just do not think about it.
