I know the subject of SSPX has been discussed many times on these forums, and I’ve read through some of the threads. But I didn’t find one that addressed this particular question.

What are your thoughts?

No, because the SSPX “church” isn’t in line with Vatican city.

Short answer: no

Long answer: no way.

(speaking hypothetically, since I’m married)

I’d be more inclined to date a Catholic-sympathetic protestant than someone in SSPX. You really couldn’t marry someone in SSPX since the couple must promise to raise their children in the faith, while someone in SSPX will be likely to work actively against that. So, if you accept this, it’s a futile dating scenario.

So if the Catholic spouse wanted to baptize and confirm the children in the Catholic faith, the SSPX spouse would likely be against that? Would it be OK to baptize and confirm in both Catholic faith and SSPX?

Absolutely not!

To re-baptise or re-confirm would be a rejection of the validity of the sacraments of the one true Church.

What if the Catholic baptism happened after the SSPX baptism? Also, is SSPX baptism valid? There is some validity to even Protestant baptisms, right?

A defiant Catholic? Right, left, up, down, no matter…no way.

I wouldn’t flatter myself, though…they’d not have me, either, so we’d agree on that.

An SSPX baptism would be valid, as per protestant baptisms. And you would not re-baptise into the Catholic faith.

BUT…

a Catholic could not validly enter marriage with the intention of baptising in SSPX or any faith other than Roman Catholic (in communion with Rome).

OK, this is probably a very controversial question, but is SSPX Catholic?

The Church has declared that the society has no canonical basis and is essentially not in communion with the rest of the Church. There is always hope that they will return to full communion with Rome, but until then they are perhaps in a similar situation to Orthodox Christians, in that they share a lot with Catholics, and some sacraments may be validly administered, but they are not in full communion with the one true Church.

The society basically, if not formally, rejects the Church authority since Vatican II, and do not cede to the authority of the present Pope. That really makes them non-Catholic.

No, because the only people who are “in” SSPX are celibate male clergy.

Would I date someone who attends an SSPX chapel? (This appears to be the question the OP is asking.)

That depends on how easily this woman is persuaded to attend a parish in communion with the Holy See. I would not willingly defect to an SSPX parish. I would not even willingly attend one of their Masses. I have never attended an EF Mass, and if I would, it would be a diocesan or FSSP one.

So it would be a deal-breaker if she expected me to give up my parish for hers.

Heck no. If you saw the guys from SSPX that I’ve met, you’d be more inclined to date a Zoroastrian.

As a widow of 71 years (72 in another week+) I would not date an SSPX, but I don’t think we have any in this small town! Would I date a Protestant at my age – only if they were willing to attend Mass with me. I married a Protestant and he converted one year after our marriage, and attended Mass every week with me, even prior to our marriage, in fact we were married in the Catholic Parish here! He loved the Catholic faith since he was a child, but his family most certainly did not. His first wife was Baptist, so he joined her Church, as she was unwilling to attend any Mass (other than a wedding or funeral). After she died, he attended no church at all, until we dated, and he attended Mass the weekend after our first date, and died with the Sacraments administered as a Catholic, and told our Priest on his death bed “make sure my funeral is completely Catholic!!” He was probably a better Catholic when he converted at age 65, than a lot of “cradle” Catholics, since he took nothing for granted, prayed a daily Rosary, and prayed each evening with me when I came home from work, and prayed for me each day before I drove to work as a Nurse! SSPX – no way. Latin Rite (diocesan) yes. Still love the old Latin Mass I grew up with, but nearest one is 50 miles away!:)🙂

And that, gentlemen, is how you start off a post if you want to have a commanding seniority over everybody else.

Except I’m pretty sure it’s a typo 😛

edit: lol, nevermind. I just figured out what you meant. I thought you were saying that you’ve been a widow for 71 years.

Not a typo – just cut the sentence wrong!! I’m 71 years old, soon to be 72, widowed for 2 1/2 years, and surrounded by widowers in this town, (most in their 90’s!) and most are Protestant. The few widowers in my Parish are like me – they really don’t want to date anymore. But no, I wouldn’t date an SSPX widower or single man!

No, I wouldn’t date someone who attends an SSPX chapel. I also wouldn’t date someone from certain protestant backgrounds which are very anti-Catholic. [Specifically when I was dating I seemed to end up with Presbyterians. 😛 Although I did also date both Latin and Eastern Catholics.]

I have spoken to my children about not willingly “unevenly yoking” themselves. Certainly you can be friends with anyone, but as you begin to discern marriage, it is only wise to not include those who do not believe or practice as you do.

I am married with four kids so this is hypothetical. But I would date an SSPX with reservations.

In my younger time there would have been no reservations, the SSPX align more with my traditional viewpoints with the liturgy.

I was a convert and could have easily been lured by the SSPX. But since I am fully in communion with Christs, Church, I would have serious reservations now. Plus I have seen how the SSPX is with families and realize that it is all or nothing for most SSPXrs. Could I date someone with a love for the EF that has no access to one except the SSPX and does not subscribe to disobedience to Rome and desires reconciliation. Yes. But methinks that is quite a small pool of possible dates. I am 38 with three kids of my own so it would also be hard to find an age appropriate SSPX single lady anyway.🤷

That being said, If I did date an SSPXer we would have to get married in a Church in union with Rome.

Before I converted I was agnostic.

I highly doubt I would have dated an SSPX member just because their beliefs would have scared me away. It would have been too extreme for me.

Now? If I was suddenly widowed and actually desired to marry again?

Still, no.

But there are other people I would instantly cross off my list and never date anyway. I wouldn’t date who wasn’t Christian or whose Christian beliefs differ too much from my own.
So that would only include other Catholics and Orthodox…who agreed to raise our children Catholic.

I’m not sure about this.

I am married, but back when I was dating, I probably would have dated an SSPX girl. I did date some protestant girls, but I never even considered marrying one of them unless she converted beforehand.

But SSPX? Their baptisms are valid. Their doctines and beliefs are in no way different from ours. Their orders are valid. They perform the Tridentine Mass, which is valid. They don’t deny the primacy of the Pope.

As near as I can tell, the only way in which they are not in union with the Vatican is that they reject some of the documents of Vatican II. I think one on ecumenism is one of them. Not sure what the others are.

But I would have reservations even so. From what I know of SSPX people around here, not many would attend the N.O., even for the sake of family unity. But if the girl would??? I don’t think, in that event, that I could rightly reject her just because she’s SSPX.

I should add that SSPX ers are not all the same. One of my granddaughters, in fact, has dated an SSPX boy. He has attended N.O. Mass with her, but has never asked her to attend an SSPX Mass. If one asks him about his religion, his response is: “I’m just Catholic.” I’m not sure whether there is a difference between some of the older generation and the younger ones, but I suspect there is.
