Would you date someone in SSPX?

I just had a long conversation with a lady whose daughter was dating a SSPX boy before he entered the SSPX seminary. The control the SSPX church had over this boy’s mind and behavior was cult like. The boy himself didn’t want to be a priest but was told that he had a vocation and if he didn’t pursue it to ordination and beyond, he was certain to go to Hell.

He wasn’t allowed to talk to his former girlfriend.

The lady who related this to me is very traditionalist, and she called the SSPX a cult. Several members of our local Latin Mass community have left the Church and actually moved to be near SSPX churches. They are encouraged to not stay in contact with family and friends who are not SSPX.

I would in all strongest terms discourage my daughter or son from dating a SSPX member just as I would discourage them from dating any cultlike religious society.

Scary.

Thank you for the responses so far. Would it be a sin to attend and receive at an SSPX Mass? What if you also attend a non-SSPX Mass in addition to that to fulfill the Sunday obligation?

I know the subject of SSPX has been discussed many times on these forums, and I’ve read through some of the threads. But I didn’t find one that addressed this particular question.

What are your thoughts?
Nope!

But SSPX? Their baptisms are valid. Their doctines and beliefs are in no way different from ours. Their orders are valid. They perform the Tridentine Mass, which is valid. They don’t deny the primacy of the Pope.
Actually, their orders are not recognised. Their priests are recognised as validly ordained, but suspended due to their belonging to an improper order. Catholics are not recommended to participate in SSPX masses, which are recognised as valid but illicit (unlawful).

Pope Benedict said in 2009 of the SSPX: “Until the doctrinal questions are clarified, the Society has no canonical status in the Church, and its ministers – even though they have been freed of the ecclesiastical penalty – do not legitimately exercise any ministry in the Church.”

Here is a discussion thta may prove helpful in understanding this: zenit.org/en/articles/mass-with-the-society-of-st-pius-x

This discussion should help clarify the current situation: zenit.org/en/articles/mass-with-the-society-of-st-pius-x
Thank you for sharing this. I also saw this in the article:
The Sacraments of Penance and Matrimony, however, require that the priest enjoys the faculties of the diocese or has proper delegation. Since that is not the case with these priests, these sacraments are invalid.
For people who are married by SSPX priests, would kind of process would they have to go through to have their marriage validated by the Catholic Church?

Presumably the same process for any Catholic not validly married in the Church. This has been something of an evolving situation though, so I’m not sure on how far back that would go, say for couples married by SSPX priest earlier, when the Church’s position regarding the SSPX was less defined. Either way, a convalidation should not be difficult.

I am not sure what the rules are regarding discussing this on this forum. I am under the impression we cannot advocate for the SSPX but I don’t know where that is stated. You should check out Fr Z.'s blog
wdtprs.com/blog/

He is a Catholic priest who is SSPX knowledgeable. Search SSPX

I believe one can attend an SSPX out of love for the EF when no EF is available and making sure one does not support a schismatic mindset. It would fulfil your Sunday Obligation.

This is also being discussed here.

No, I’m not advocating for SSPX. Just want to understand.

This story, if true, would be quite disconcerting. I understand this is second-hand anecdotal evidence, but has anyone else heard anything similar?

Reading through many of the responses here on people’s misconceptions on the SSPX…wow. Why the utter distain for this group, people? Good gracious. They’re more Catholic than many so-called Catholics “in union” with Rome. Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden are “in union” with Rome…need I say more?

I’m happily married but if my daughters wanted to date a Catholic who attends Mass at an SSPX chapel, that would not be a dealbreaker.

How large is the SSPX in the US? I must be the odd ball, but I have never experienced any one of them. 🤷

The SSPX is considered to be in formal schism with the Catholic Church. My husband, who is knowledgeable on this issue, states that this dates back to when Cardinal Lefebvre ordained a number of bishops WITHOUT ecclesial approval - even though the current Pope had said he would ordain some bishops within a few months. Consequently, there was no “state of emergency” that Lefebvre felt was present, and he had no license to ordain those bishops.

As a result of their illicit consecration and subsequent ordinations, SSPX priests and bishops are barred from celebration of the sacraments. Catholics are not to attend an SSPX chapel unless there are no other Catholic churches available to attend. Confessions and marriages celebrated by SSPX clergy are not valid.

People wishing to attend the EF should speak to their bishop and the FSSP about the possibility of an FSSP presence in their diocese. This group is 100% in communion with Rome, and celebrate valid, licit EF Masses.

Helpmeet, you have several inaccurate and simply incorrect statements here:
  • Lefebvre wasn’t a Cardinal; he was an Archbishop
  • Where do you get that all the Society’s priests and bishops are “barred” from the celebration of the sacraments?
  • Who decreed that a Catholic may not attend a Traditional Latin Mass celebrated by an SSPX bishop or priest unless there are no other Catholic churches to attend? So Helpmeet, if I’m on vacation with my family, and I have two choices where to take my family to Mass. I can either go to the clown Mass down the street where Bozo the Clown will be making an appearance on the altar, or I can go to High Mass with incense at the SSPX chapel down the street, you’re telling me that I have to go to the clown Mass because it’s available and me and my family would be “barred” from attending Mass at the SSPX chapel?
  • How can a marriage officiated by an SSPX priest be “invalid”? The spouses confer the sacrament of marriage upon each other, not the priest. The priest is there to bless the marriage.
  • Good idea to seek out the FSSP to celebrate traditional Masses, but you point out the FSSP Masses are valid, as if to insinuate that the SSPX Masses aren’t valid. Both Masses are valid.

They are not in Schism. They are not in full communion either. Please be accurate and respectful to a volatile and confusing situation.

What is scary is the quick labeling of something a cult. It ought to be against forum rules. It adds nothing to the discussion.

Agreed, Hoosier. Some people here just spout off inaccurate and misguided opinions on the SSPX that really have no basis in truth. The SSPX is not in schism; they are in an irregular situation. I’m not a member of the SSPX, but I do attend the Traditional Mass when I can. I wish folks would get clear on what the status of the SSPX is, and save their anger and venom for those so-called “Catholics” who don’t care to assent to the Church’s teachings but remain in “good standing.” Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Gov. Cuomo for starters.

a Catholic could not validly enter marriage with the intention of baptising in SSPX or any faith other than Roman Catholic (in communion with Rome).
How do you mean? There’s no defect of consent or impediment corresponding to that.

They don’t have the authority to witness marriages, and there are problems with that in the ordinary form of marriage, which needs a proper official witness.
