Hi,

I saw the movie “For Greater Glory” yesterday. Would you die for your faith? And if we refuse to accept the possibility of martyrdom for ourselves can we really call ourselves faithful to the Catholic Church and to Christ? I was thinking about this deeply today.

Pray to all the martyrs of the Church to obtain for us heroic virtue and supernatural faith, hope and love for God, even should it lead to our own deaths.

Joshua

You ask a very hard question. Truthfully, an answer that I would give wound not matter until the time where I must make a choice between my faith=death or disavowing faith=life. I would hope I could die for my faith but sometimes God has other plans.

I’m always skeptical of questions like this one. To my mind, it is better to remain alive to keep on witnessing your faith than to die for it. All that does is create a body.

I would pray to have the courage to be martyred for my faith. I am not naturally a strong individual but I believe the Holy Spirit would come to my aid if I found myself in that situation.

YES.

I get angry at God sometimes, and have turned my back on him at times too. But even in times of anger…if anyone were to try to make me renounce my Lord with the threat of death, then let it be so. I will die with His name on my lips.

Wow. I really did say that.

Probably. I just can’t prove it yet.😉
Edit: I think none of us can prove it yet.

Denying your faith isn’t a very good witness. In fact it’s a terrible witness. How is anyone going to take your witness seriously if when it came to the crunch you denied your faith? To die for your faith is a witness in itself and an immensely powerful one.

Dying in itself proves little. If you lived your life truly believing every single word of your beliefs and lived them out every single moment you drew breath, and THEN went to the grave, then dying might serve some useful witness, but otherwise it is useless.

Plus, what happens after your death? In many cases no-one else will come to take your place, and you cannot defend them yourself, so your beliefs will often die with you.

If in the face of some danger, you somehow extricated yourself from that danger by deception, and then remained to further strengthen your position, then that’s worth something.

I already find it extremely difficult to live like a devout Christian, and I am sure that I could not die like one unless God decides that for me. :o

It’s easy enough to say we would die for our Faith, but the grace to suffer martyrdom comes from Christ. It’s not something we can claim ourselves without facing the choice between life and death.

I think this is a good question at this point in time. Sacrifice is so hard. It has become a dirty word and in truth it would be the supreme sacrifice. So many are not even willing to defend the gift of this faith. Each day that is my first prayer and promise to defend and be the example I need to be and that He gives me the courage to do just that.

I recommend you watch the movie “For Greater Glory” which is in theaters now. It was watching that film which prompted me to ask this question. If you are willing to deny your beliefs when someone threatens you with death or persecution, then I hope you find some better beliefs, because you have nothing to live for anyways.

This is a lot of big talk, just pray that you are not going to be tested.
