Non-believers, too, can be martyrs. The Yugoslav Stefan Filipovic moments before his execution by fascists in World War ll, calling for support for the resistance, and the Communist Party.
He was a believer too. Probably he did not believe in Jesus Christ but I am sure that he strongly believed in something. The Communism that he supported was a form of belief, if you look around when he died there were really no books or literature with a systematic analysis of the new political movement, just a lot of dogmatic statements. Isn’t it amazing that most of the communist martyrs really died for principles that Catholics call Natural Law? Isn’t it amazing that most of the communist leaders were just angry opportunists?

Well, I do not claim they were saints, or agree with them, but two thirds of the membership of the pre-war Yugoslav communist party died fighting the fascists, a great many by execution. I would not describe them in this uncharitable way.

I often pray, that should it happen that I must die for Jesus, that I will have the grace to remain faithful to the bitter end.

I pray that I will submit to whatever love requires of me.

I’m always skeptical of questions like this one. To my mind, it is better to remain alive to keep on witnessing your faith than to die for it. All that does is create a body.
I agree. It’s a lot harder to live for your faith, as in to suffer traumatically and still defend it after such trauma (if that is what you’re implying). So yeah, I would die and LIVE for it.

Its better to make the **other **guy a martyr.

Can you imagine if Charles Martel had chosen to be martyred at the battle of Poitier? We’d all be Muslim and St peters would have suffered the same fate as St Sophia in Constantinople.

:clapping: Love the Gen Patton attitude.

“No Christian ever won a crusade by dying for his faith. He won it, by making the other poor dumb martyr die for his faith.”

As for me, I don’t know because I have never been put in that position.

Indeed, some of the greatest Biblical figures weren’t those who died for their faith, but those who lived it through adversity.

Daniel continued to worship God in the royal courts of Persia even though he knew that there was an edict forbidding him from doing so. He eventually came out the victor.

Jesus himself was rejected by many of his own people

St Paul was arrested, brought up before the courts and thrown into prison, and yet still continued to believe.

Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery and eventually imprisoned on false charges by Potipher. Yet he still preferred to live this and use his God-given talents to help the baker and wine-bearer in prison, and even when he was restored to a position of power, still showed great loyalty to his people and to God.

Thats the one!

Don’t forget St. Peters sword spilled blood for the Lord, he was rebuked, but not excommunicated.

If my back were to the wall I’d do the same thing and let God judge me for it.

God’s will will be done. I feel I would die for the Faith. I don’t love my life and I don’t love this world, but everybody has a job, like Charles Martel.

I would most definitely!!! Everyday has been a daily struggle dealing with the secular world and people who fail to understand why our faith is so strong and why we are so dedicated to God. I stay strong and hold my ground because I know that is what God wants from his followers. I know what I am talking about is nowhere close to the death aspect but I hold my ground when it comes to my religion, and no one can make me abandon my belief in God and his commandments!!!

But despite how hard people try to make it for us to maintain our belief in God I still live for it and fight for it everyday!!!

GREAT QUESTION!!!

Hi,

I saw the movie “For Greater Glory” yesterday. Would you die for your faith? And if we refuse to accept the possibility of martyrdom for ourselves can we really call ourselves faithful to the Catholic Church and to Christ? I was thinking about this deeply today.

Pray to all the martyrs of the Church to obtain for us heroic virtue and supernatural faith, hope and love for God, even should it lead to our own deaths.

Joshua
Yes! I am ready to die for my CATHOLIC FAITH.

I don’t think a catholic sets out one day and decides that “today is the day I will become a martyr.”

That is the difference between a suicide bomber and a martyr. Suicide bombers may call themselves martyrs because they are so convinced by their trainer that it is what they are but, it is what it is - suicide.

Martyrdom occurs pretty much spur of the moment. You either receive the grace of discerning that what you are asked to say or do would be a direct rejection of your faith and refuse to say it or do it even onto torture or death- or you give in for fear of death and/or torture. It is a sudden realization of crystal clarity of mind and soul- of temporal salf preservation or immediate entrance into heaven.

Heros are similar in that they forget about their own safety and well being for the sake of the one or ones that are in danger of death. This is not wreckless abandon- this is putting aside “self” for the sake of others. It is genuine.

Considering that I’m agnostic nobut I do know that many a catholic I know actually would my parents being those

I hope that I would just as I hope that I would for my family!

I think this really depends on if the individual is more prone to a fight or flight response to danger. I once stayed in a swaying building during an earthquake until every other person around me was able to get out. I would like to think my natural fight response combined with my gratitude for the Lord would enable me to give up my life for my faith. I truely believe I would, but do not fault anyone who would do otherwise because I know how strong the biological urge to live is within humans. I use St. Stephen as a role model and his martyrdom inspires my faith.

Bc what we know of what happened to Jesus first of all who was the biggest of all, then the apostles, and early church fathers, and those that came afterwards, i would say yes.

The ppl whi fought for their faith in Mexico from were the movie For greater Glory came from, they had love and courage for our faith. if they did why couldn’t I?
