Is it appropriate to go to the funeral of an ex father in-law? My ex-mother in law is still living and she’s the one that let me know that he had died. I have been friends with both of them for many years now since the divorce. I have been also on friendly terms with my ex’s siblings. The ex is the only one I’m not on good terms with and I really would rather not talk to him. Although there will probably be a number of people there, I don’t think there will be enough that I could just disappear in the crowd in the church. I definitely would not go to the luncheon afterward. Would you go to the funeral?

Dear friend,

If you want to go to the funeral, then go. It would be a good thing to do and your ex’s mother would appreciate it. If you see your ex, saying hello would be appropriate and you will live through it. But if you don’t want to go, then don’t.

I suggest that you let your compassion be your guide and not concern for yourself.
