For some non-Catholics, would you go to mass/service/church at a specific church/place if the minister there is not good with his preaching? or you would go find somewhere else?

Thanks!

So if my minister was not good with his preaching, would I go somewhere else?
I can answer this from experience :o
What happens is I continue to go every Sunday and teach Sunday School, and Wednesday but that is just Bible study and choir practice for the kiddos.
I look foward to the day that the second minister is going to preach because…well…it is worth listening to.
You find yourself actually going to the service about 3 out of 4 Sundays and just the Sunday School every week.
You don’t switch churches, WAY WAY WAY too traumatic on the kids and so forth.
When I am there, I usually give it awhile, and a lot of the time end up cracking the Bible and reading familiar stories.
Just being honest, judge me if you will. I can handle liberal. I can handle conservative. I cannot handle no coherent thesis or message.
Sorry for the rant, you hit home 😃 :o 😃

I’m not sure I understand the question.

SolaFide, probably this should’ve been my question - would you swtich churches?
If what I understand you to be asking is: would I switch churches just because the pastor is not “dynamic” in his delivery? No, I wouldn’t switch churches. The church I attended in the states is pastored by a former PhD in biochemistry. You can probably guess that his delivery is a little “dry” at times. But he is a man who loves the Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart and sticks to the word of God in his teaching.

The church I am currently working in has a pastor I don’t even get along with that well but our issues are personality clashes not doctrine or theology issues. He loves and adheres to the Word of God and that is what is important.

well obviously my answer is slanted since I am Catholic, but I think if I found the preaching uninspired I would first try to ignore the delivery and style and listen to the actual message. I have found over the years that some of the most dynamic speakers are actually delivering a rather vapid message, and some of the dryest speakers are actually giving a profound message.

I was raised Protestant and we switched churches a lot(scandal, abuse, death threats all by pastors). But only once because of the preaching. We left because it was “boring” and everyone there was “old” Though everyone was nice and taught that denomination’s doctrine properly.

I wish my family had stayed there instead of being sucked into the awful church they go to now where the pastor is only interesting because he stands behind the pulpit telling stories about his job as a salesman and making fun of Catholics simply because he knows nothing about them. How Christian of him!

I would take everything else at the church into consideration before making a jump. The next place might have more wrong with it than merely dry boring sermons. And the sermon shouldn’t be the reason one goes to church.

Interesting question. As a Friend each of us in Meeting is a “minister” to one another. There are many who don’t have a great public speaking manner…but for Friends what they say is more important than how they say it.

Out of the Living Silence as moved by the Spirit, each one who speaks does so with a message from God that they have been moved to bring to the Meeting.

Ministry from Friends in Meeting isn’t traditionally criticized out of Meeting. IF…and I"ve only seen it once in thirty years…IF a message is “self serving” or disagreed with those Friends who are moved, call for the Friend giving the “offensive” message to “stand down” and return to the Silence until they are “Clear”.

So I guess the answer would be, “No I wouldn’t go to another Meeting if I didn’t like the speaker/minister.” Friends from the Meeting would “Elder” a Friend who disrupted the Living Silence on a consistent basis.

If the minister is not “good” by that I take it he is preaching a ineffective message. If he cannot be spoken to about it, then I would leave. The whole thing will only go downhill with out good leadership.

does it say “thou shalt keep holy the sabbeth” or “thou shalt be entertained on the sabbeth?” Father Grochelle said that once, and it has stuck in my mind. If the preaching is so bad that you cannot get a message, that is one thing. If the message is there, offer it up.

This is so true!!

I guess that my answer, though, would depend on what the OP means by “not good with preaching”. If you mean, as Puzzleannie says, that he just has a weak delivery, then I would stay, and seek to learn from him just the same.
If a pastor were actually teaching something that was not true, not Christian, then I think that leaving would be an option…I would not, for example (since we’re at 🙂 Catholic Answers), stay in a church where a pastor was constantly criticizing Catholics, in the time when he should be preaching. That’s a whole other thing. I don’t care to waste time listening to someone’s prejudices…That’s an abuse of his position!

If the preaching is bad, as in the Preacher stutters, and has trouble holding my attention, of course I stay. he is there to teach me, not entertain me.

How ever if by bad you mean teaches heresy, I would go have a discussion with him during the week about it. Find out if I’m only misunderstanding. If it’s not a misunderstanding I explain the position I’m in. If he does not change it, I must leave.

at my best friends catholic church she has this “problem” the one guy is well sorta boring and the other his delivery is much more interesting.

I think if it was only the boring one she would still go but jump a bit to the german one she goes to as well. But she would never leave.

!
That’s what I meant.
Thanks! 🙂

Well, if thats the case I suppose you could strike up a conversation after and ask him how hes doing, and ask him questions about the sermon or what ya call it 😉

anyway ask him for some more info or finer points and get him to expound on it. Perhaps the audience are the boring ones. Thinking about it, why does it have to be the speaker, right?

Maybe he trys but no one responds, or tells him, I liked what you said or tell me more about it.

I bet some of that would perk up both sides.

🙂

I think that person is asking (behind all the verbage) about going to where s/he can get itching ears tickled just right.

Good suggestion, but I think I was focusing more about staying or leaving, not how to make it better. Most people don’t want to discuss.

While its true no one wants to discuss its too bad they dont, understanding could even happen.

Face it this is a problem catholic or non catholic, catholics are more loyal to the church no matter whos there but it can be a problem.

AND the other part was just what about the congretation. My hubby is a otter by that I mean hes a motivator, when he tries to get people to “move” and they sit like lumps and he gets no feedback he doesnt give up but he does lose heart.

Can anyone imagine being a pastor priest in charge of teaching a bunch of uninvolved people that sit there and dont respond?? Well maybe a couple do but for the most part you dont seem to get reactions from them. Dont forget reactions indicate that they are understanding what you are telling them.

Not entertaining just getting through. Its like saying lets go to Disneyland and the people say well ok. We are talking about God here, I think Hes better than Disneyland. The response should be big.

Thats what those charged with flocks have to deal with and I think your question should address the other half of the communication, which is the audience, its takes 2

😃

In other words, you would talk to your pastor instead of going to another church - that is one of the answers to my question, then. 🙂

My next question for you is - would you attend regularly a service where the language is foreign to you - you won’t be able to understand what the language the pastor and the whole congregation is using?
