Would you join a Crusade?

If hypothetically, the Pope called for a military crusade, would you join it?

And let’s say the cause was a just one, not some crazy political action like the attack on Byzantium.

Basically, it’s the idea of it- is it ever right to use force in defense of the Good? That’s how the question presents itself to me.
 
I am a girl, so that is one reason that I would not go. Maybe a Crusade is exactly what we need. I mean these Muslims are going to far when they martyr our priests. When they do that it becomes a religious war and maybe that does call for a religous leader to fight, but I don’t know enough to say. 🤷 :confused:

You’d have to be more specific about the cause. For instance, I believe it was correct and morally proper to go to war against Hitler. I was shocked when a priest I knew said it would have been better if nobody fought that war–Hitler was going to fight and conquer and kill, and I asked him if he thought Jesus would have wanted people to stand by and not attempt to stop the slaughter of innocents. He had no answer for me.

The Pope is calling Christians to a crusade, let’s say its a morally good fight- whatever you think it is- this is about the principle not the specific cause. Let’s keep this hypothetical lest we start going into dangerous legal territory.

Oh yeah, and since its hypothetical, vote yes or no depending on moral support, not whether or not you could actually partake in combat.
 
I wouldn’t go…but not because of nonviolence. I wouldn’t go because of medical reasons that make it impossible for me to fight. But you bet I would do everything I could from home.

That’s me–with my eyesight and medical issues I’d be a liability on the battlefield…but my husband would go in a heartbeat, and I would support him.

I used to command a Tank Troop, and we’ve already seen how effective an Abrahms is on a battlefield.

( and the attack on Constantinople was against direct Papal instruction - he ordered them to go through Alexandria. The Pope excommunicated everyone involved.

So, unlike the 4th Crusaders, I’d actually listen to Papal instructions on the matter.
 
I would not physcially partake in one because I am now a mother with a baby on the way, but as catherineajt said, " my husband would go in a heartbeat, and I would support him."

My sisters, mother and I would stay home, but my dad and my brothers (once they were old enough) would go and we would do all we could to help them.👍 With our German Shepherd leading the way guided by the Holy Ghost, we could not lose. 😃 👍

Hahaha…our family could add another German Shepherd to fight the good fight too! He is only a puppy now, but is going to be an absolute monstrous horse when he is full grown! And what a protector he already is at the mere age of 5 months!
 
I would join a crusade if our Pope Benedict called one, because I know His Holiness would have to have a very good reason for it. I’m certain he would not order the faithful to kill innocent people or even put them in a position where they would do so. Also, let’s keep in mind that a crusade does not necessarily need to be violent, especially in today’s world where any kind of military conflict seems to involve weapons of mass destruction and numerous deaths of noncombatants. More governments have been brought down or at least altered course because of massive demonstrations or boycotts than by violent revolutions. Imagine sixty million Catholics in the streets demanding an end to abortion! Could that not also constitute a crusade?

Of course. Have you ever heard of Just War? If their was a good reason for us to believe that good would come out of the war then yes perhaps I would fight. Of course I would want to dress like a crusader as well.

isn’t it the attitude of many priests and religious that they would rather die than shoot someone? wouldn’t Jesus feel the same? ideally, are we not supposed to imitate Jesus in every way?

scenario: a terrorist demands from you, “deny God in front of all these people or i will shoot your wife and kids right here, right now.” you could temporarily lie and say you deny God, but isn’t the holiest choice to sacrifice your family as a testament to God?
i am reminded of Job…

doesn’t the Pope ask his Swiss Guard to shoot and kill if necessary?

Yeah right. How would we know it is moral? The first Crusade, urged by Urban II, wasn’t much of a success was it? At that time it was believed it was morally right to do this. Now instead of being able to peacefully visit Jerusalem we have to worry about Christians, Muslims and Jews fighting one another. Our actions are like throwing a pebble into a pond causing the concentric ripples that go on and on and on. 🤷
