Would you join a Crusade?

At that time it was believed it was morally right to do this.
In modern times we too can say that the first crusade in both it’s principles and intentions were morally right.
Now instead of being able to peacefully visit Jerusalem we have to worry about Christians, Muslims and Jews fighting one another
Not just during our present age but during the times of the crusades did Christians and pilgrims face persecution. In fact that was one of the many reasons behind the first crusade, pilgrims were not safe.

You almost seem to be suggesting that the Crusades are the cause of today’s problems when in fact, the problems of the middle east pre-date even the crusades.
. Our actions are like throwing a pebble into a pond causing the concentric ripples that go on and on and on. 🤷
I’m not too sure what this means, but it seems to be implying an isolationist or perhaps pacifist view? If that is the case I would like to say that our actions can have a positive outcome and so I don’t think we should be so quick to shy away from any kind of action. This is especially so when you consider what remains of our apostolic brethren throughout the whole of the middle east who face so much opposition.

You know, I wouldnt object to another attack on Byzantium. We can reconquer it from the Muslim Turks and restore the city to the Eastern Churches. Wouldnt take much to dynamite those minarets the Muslims befouled the Hagia Sofia with.

scenario: a terrorist demands from you, “deny God in front of all these people or i will shoot your wife and kids right here, right now.” you could temporarily lie and say you deny God, but isn’t the holiest choice to sacrifice your family as a testament to God?
i am reminded of Job…
idk if it was your family as well, I don’t know how pious that would be. Aren’t you really then only thinking about yourself. If you were alone, yea, but I don’t know. It’s a hard choice regardless.

i was told that it indeed is the ultimate sacrifice, to sacrifice in the name of God. the testament to His name for other people and future generations would be so great, that you would sacrifice your own family for Him. it’s so difficult that many people wouldn’t be able to do such a thing.

what if you were alone and no one else would know? well, the executioner would know. i read that a Roman soldier who escorted St. Andrew(?) from his cell to the judge was so moved by St. Andrew’s testament, that he himself was converted and fell to his knees and was beheaded along with the Saint.

would you lay down your life for the very enemy who is taking it from you? talk about making an intercessory prayer! so difficult, indeed so difficult what God asks of us…

Does it matter if other people know. All that is important is that you know.

We ARE in a Crusade.

No, I do not mean the Global War on Terror…

I mean a true Crusade, for our Faith, for our Souls, for our Future.

Someone here already said it…we are in a Crusade against this Culture of Death. The Frontlines run through every living room, school and church in our nation and the world.

We must rise up and throw off the death-worshipers, the God-deniers…we must stand for Truth, in Love to uphold the sanctity of life.

This is a very interesting thread. What is the meaning of “Deus Vult?”

To which part of my post is this addressed?

My point was in response to a poster who seems to be suggesting that any kind of action in the middle east is bad because our actions disrupt the region.

I think that the position of complete isolationism or pacifism is unreasonable. To stay away from the middle east for fear that our actions may have negative results is ridiculous because it is also a rejection of actions that could have positive results.

Moreover we also have obligation to the Middle East and it’s Christian minority which predates Islam by several centuries. I should like to think that if I were an Apostolic Christian in the Middle East that I could turn to my brothers for help - and Christians of the Middle East certainly need help.

“God wills it”

It’s Latin, and it was the phrase made popular by the Crusades because it was the battle cry of the Christian warriors. It refers to the belief that the crusades were in accordance with God’s will.

I’m not sure what the idea here might be. A crusade is a war. For what reason would we engage in a war? Clearly it could not be for the purpose of defending God, as no one can harm God. Similarly it cannot be for land, means of production or natural resources as the Church being a spiritual kingdom has no need of these things. Further God has extended his promise of protection spiritually: “The gates of hell shall not prevail against (my Church).” These things being the case, I can make no argument for joining a war which has no justification.
The tank commander, artillery officer and air group leader can stand down. Your services are unnecessary.

Matthew

I believe it was a hypothetical question, and you seem to saying there could be no hypothetical reason for a crusade which of course is false.

Pacifists really do not have a very firm grasp on reality so they cannot be swayed by reason, I just ignored him and I suggest you do the same. Really, you’ll never convince a pacifist otherwise.

My parents went to RCIA with a Priest who said that if a murderous rapist were to break into your house, you should just accept the rape and murder of your children because “Jesus never killed anyone or met anyone with violence”.

I have no time for them.

Imagine sixty million Catholics in the streets demanding an end to abortion! Could that not also constitute a crusade?
More marches might constitute a crusade, but imagine if 60 million catholics had the courage to actually use righteous force. So many innocents could be saved if we just had the courage of our convictions, if we would just be willing to take that next step and end this holocaust by eliminating the source. 1 heathen abortionist versus 1000 babies? I say hang him high:thumbsup:

honestly, i don’t think he meant to stand by and do nothing. i think he meant that he would refrain from deadly force. a good beating would do until authorities arrive. preferably with a cord.

No, he literally meant it. He said you ought to die like Jesus died.

If hypothetically, the Pope called for a military crusade, would you join it?

And let’s say the cause was a just one, not some crazy political action like the attack on Byzantium.

Basically, it’s the idea of it- is it ever right to use force in defense of the Good? That’s how the question presents itself to me.
I can’t imagine a better way to die than in battle for the Lord.

Possibly during the post-game euphoric celebration of another Ravens Super Bowl, but short of that, a Crusade would be tops.

Sorry, the Catholic Church has not encouraged such logical thinking about this issue as of yet.

Interesting how the Church would call a crusade against the killing of a few pilgrims to Jerusalem, but does nothing when faced with the murder of millions upon millions.

Intellectual speculation, of course.
