Would you join a Crusade?

Love doesn’t mean coddle, and it certainly doesn’t mean we should stand idle while evil men and ideologies prosper and spread their errors throughout the world.

I love my neighbour as my self. However should my neighbour’s behaviour threaten my family or those entrusted to my protection (numbering about 50 children and young people) I would take them out of the equation as quickly as possible. If that came to killing then so be it. Love does not mean you allow them to do evil to others.

In answer to the original question. Yes, should it be necessary for the survival of the Church to pursue military action, and should the Holy Father call for it, on the basis of the Just War theory, I would join such a Crusade.

This War on Islam the U.S and U.K have going on isn’t a Crusade though and I disagree with it wholeheartedly.

You can really tell she is a troll because she tried to get everyone to think that she is a nun.

No, however I think that she wanted us to believe that. Everyone nows that Catholics call nuns sister.

True true, you may be right, I must admit until I read the posts I thought she was a nun. However maybe it was an innocent mistake.

I see no passivity or coddling going on in Jesus’ message. Quite to the contrary, Christ demands action! Peaceful action!
For example:

Jesus said, “You have learnt how it was said: ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ But I say to you, Offer the wicked man no resistance. If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him.” Mt. 5.38-41

Jesus said**, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy; But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those whose persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Mt. 5.43-46

Jesus said, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly.” Lk. 6.27-28

I see nothing in the Gospels that sanctions war. Perhaps we should re-examine our own understanding of Christ’s message prior to crusading. Seems like we have gone astray. Christ quite actively carried his cross to his own execution; an execution carried out by those who quite clearly differed with Jesus in their ideology, theology and world view.

I beg to differ my friend. Peace is both the destination and the route. Any route other than peace cannot lead to true peace. I would humbly submit that you cannot slay your brother and love him at the same time.

Jesus said, “why do you call me, “Lord, Lord” and not do what I say?” Lk. 6.46

In your opinion should we get rid of the entire bible and only keep the gospels? If not, I can find numerous passages concerning war, violence and destruction on behalf of the Lord our GOD.

You must take this thread in the context of the OP. A Crusade is not a love fest where we all stand around and sing kum by ya. It is a holy war fighting for your faith. If violence abhors you, then don’t participate.

And I in turn submit to you that you cannot allow your brother to wantonly slay your other brothers without attempting to stop him, using the minimum amount of required force.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If I ever go on a killing spree or some other terrible thing without remorse, then yes I hope someone kills me, if there is no other chance of stopping me.

Do you not understand the concept of a crusade? It is a Holy War fought on behalf of the Church. It is to risk your life, to go through the horrors of war so that a better end may come about.

War is horrible - I don’t ever want to have to kill another human. I don’t know how I could coop with myself. I don’t ever want to be shot or go through the pains of war. Yet I pray I’d have the courage to sacrifice myself if I was needed to pick up a weapon for those around me.

The bottom line is that sometimes evil men come about who wish to harm those whom we love. I am a young, athletic, strong male - if anyone is expected to do the defending, it’s men like me. I hope that I can look into the eyes of my loved ones, and use that as the inspiration I need to fight those who want to kill them.

Sometimes peace is unavoidable, sometimes enemies come about who are determined to destroy - who hate you so much that they will to kill you and your family. History provides us with countless examples of such evil men, men who are so determined to destroy you that peace is not an option. I’d be a coward not to stand up and fight such wicked men. In such a case it is our duty to fight - it’s a cold hard fact of life.

I feel fairly comfortable that the Gospels accurately portray Jesus’ words. Given that we believe that Jesus was God, I find that there is little interpretation necessary in the passages I have quoted above. I personally give them more creedence than other parts of the bible. I am also familiar with what a crusade entails and I accordingly reject it as a truly Christian action. Rather than kum by ya, I prefer the Agnus Dei…
 
If the Pope made a call for a crusade that conformed to just war doctrine (which of course it would) i would join in a heartbeat.
