Would you let your 13 year old read Nicholas Sparks?

Hi

I have not read any Nicholas Sparks novels (not my thing) and my 13 year old took the book “Last Song” out of the library. I would read it myself first to see, but she is hounding me and I don’t have time to read it right this very second, lol.

If you have read it, is there any objectionable material? Please be specific if you can, thanks.

I have not read that particular book so I cannot give specifics on it but I have read other books of his and don’t remember anything off color or objectionable. Might I suggest using Wikipedia, it will give you a pretty good run down of the plot and an idea of his writing style. I always hesitate in making recommendations for other people’s children but you should be able to glean enough to make an informed choice. HTH

No, I wouldn’t.

I havent read every single one of his books but I’ve read one or two and the sexual content can be on the graphic side…at least for a 13 year old.

The only one I would let her read at this age is A Walk to Remember. It does not have any “bedroom scenes” and I don’t remember anything else that would be objectionable. It is set in the 1950s (or close to that). The Last Song is also ok from what I remember, but deals with some more intense issues, such as drug use and underage drinking, and allusions to sexual relations between some of the main character’s “friends.” Both books focus on teenagers so I think he wrote the books with that in mind.

The others are quite graphic at times and are for adults. I did read them as a teenager but I was in my later teens and skipped over the graphic scenes. I would not allow her to read them.
