Would you like the old Papal crowning ceremony brought back?

No thanks. The Church bought into way too many of the traditions of the empire and worldly power. Looking like worldly kings isn’t exactly the message Jesus was sending.

AMEN!

Christ is King…Not the popes…🤷

I do believe that the papal crown was donated to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC and is there now.

I kind of like it though 🙂
it emphasizes the fact that Christ made a Kingdom, not a democracy…

the Pope is Christ’s visible representative on earth

Most people in the world wouldnt view it that way, however.

They would see it as the pope being crowned king, not Christ. Meaning gets twisted.

Visuals are important, and so is the message they send.
Pope is still a visible representative of Christ’s on earth even without the crown.

No, I’m glad this isn’t practiced anymore. I’d prefer to see a few pictures of the Popes cleaning wounds off of sick folks and getting a little dirty, serving the beloved poor of God.

Amen.

That is the best kind of visual representation of Christ any pope, Catholic, or Christian could send.

Much more powerful message of Christ.

“What you have done unto the least of these, you have done to me.” 👍

During the days of the Papal States, when we had Kings and Queens elsewhere I cand see the need for it. Not today…

What are your views on the Papal Coronation? Would you like to see it brought back? I think the Pope looks good in the old liturgical regalia. What do you think?
Absolutely, without question. The coronation was practiced up until the late 1900s. It’s the tradition, and I’m into tradition.

Also, the reason the Pope appears like a king is because he is the direct earthly representative of the most important one. The coronation ceremony shows the power of the Church and the Pope which are existent and important to recognize. The Pope has power invested in him by God himself so a ceremony like this emphasizes the power of God.

Sorry, it’s just that I read this as the “Paypal” crowning ceremony…I’m apparently a victim of too much technology!!! :o

I agree with excellsus. Bring it back.
Don’t hold your breath. 😉
Can’t imagine it’s even under consideration by the Vatican to be honest. I think it’s more of a pipe dream of some who like the idea. 🙂

Again, SarahR speaks with wisdom and clarity.

NO! Paul 6th made a wonderful choice, and I am SO GLAD the others since him choose not to do this.

It feeds into negative catholic stereotypes.

Although I do like it, it really has no place during these times:( For non-Catholics and some Catholics, it shows that the Pope might be “power hungry” even today the Vatican is criticize because of all the “riches” it contains. I am glad that it was taken out, and would rather see someone like JP2 talking to a very poor sick man, then see the Pope in his office wearing the crown. Again I like the image, but at this point in time it just doesn’t fit.

Plus, I highly doubt any pope want’s to be wearing the crown when Jesus returns as the King of Kings 🙂

Being that the Church no longer has any kingdom ie. Papal States it dosent make any sense. The Pope is no longer a temporal ruler unless you count Vatican City.

Tradition without meaning is dead tradition. The pope was crowned when he was a temporal ruler, which he no longer is. He was NOT crowned to show the power invested in him by God. Your reasons have no backing in history.

Please note that the Pope does have temporal power. He is the sovereign of the state of Vatican City. However…

“This is not the time to return to a ceremony and an object considered, wrongly, to be a symbol of the temporal power of the Popes.” - Pope John Paul II

According to Wikipedia, it is not specifically known what the symbolism of the tiara is. Some possibilities are:
  • Universal Pastor, Universal Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, and Temporal Power
  • Father of princes and kings, Ruler of the world, Vicar of our Saviour Jesus Christ
  • (From coronation ceremony) Father of Princes and Kings, Ruler of the World, Vicar of Our Savior Jesus Christ in earth
  • Priest, Prophet and King (offices of Jesus)
  • teacher, lawmaker and judge
  • “Church Militant on earth”, the “Church Suffering after death and before heaven”, and the “Church Triumphant in eternal reward”
  • order, jurisdiction and magisterum
  • celestial, human and terrestrial worlds

It would appear that those who want it to come back have had no contact with Europeans - ex Catholics, Protestants and the secularists, who have far longer memories than people here have information.

Certainly not all of the problems over the last 1000 years in Europe are due to the temporal powers that various popes and their entourages exercised. But much of what we pass off as theological issues are far deeper rooted in temproal power issues and the “sides” they caused. We have more than enough clericalism in the clergy as it is today; we don’t need to engage in activities which fan the flames of further dissent, anger, hatred, and further regurgitation of issues that need to stay dead and buried. It was not for no reason that John Paul 2 issued the apologies he did.

The US is blessed with very short memories, with the possible exception of those who still want to get heated over the Civil War. We are blessed with a short history and relatively few other squabbles that ended up in bloodshed (with the exception perhaps of how we treated the Indians as we spread out from the East Coast). Europe not so, and im msot of the wars, the Church, rightly or wrongly took sides. Memories are much longer there than here and have all too much fodder as it is. No reason to feed it further.
