If Jesus were to suddenly reveal himself, would you recognize him?

What do you think he would have spent his life doing?

Would he have noticed that Christians were not being very Jesus-like, despite having the bible as a reference?

Do you think he would have spent his life analyzing “what went wrong?” and come up with a new simplified version with less room for ambiguity?

Do you think he would offer proof of his divine powers or would he stick with the “proof denies faith” line?

When he revealed himself, what do you think his highest priority would be?

I fail to see him now in my family, my neighbors, etc. What makes me think I’d recognize him if he appeared before me with beard, robe, sandles. I’d probably cross to the other side of the street sadly enough.

I think here in the US we’d put Him in a mental institution. Maybee He’s there already?

Let’s see, that would be the Middle-Eastern-looking Man with the nail-scars in his hands and feet, the spear-hole in his side, and the love in his eyes, right? Yeah, I’d recognize Him.

Good point. Now, how would you tell a loony from the real thing? What would the real thing have been doing all his life? Would he have spent his life trying to improve humanity? Do you think Jesus II would even know he was Jesus during his life?

Let’s say Jesus II was born in a western country in 1967 - the year that Israel reunited Jerusalem. What would you have expected him to have spent his life doing up till now?

i think the girzone book “joshua” gives great insight into this question. i didn’t like any of the follow up books and i understand that many catholics do not like this book either (maybe it’s because he ends the book with the pope not recognizing Jesus, i did like the movie’s ending better where Jesus calls him peter and the pope does recognize him, but i still think the book is fantastic).

Can I boldly suggest that Jesus II would have done the following:
  1. Noticed that many people calling themselves Christian, far from turning the other cheek and loving thy enemy, were in fact active aggressors. Jesus II would have wondered why these people weren’t following Jesus I’s example, and looked for a scientific explanation for this behaviour, and also sought to rewrite the bible in a more succinct form, learning the lessons of the last 2000 years of divergence from Jesus’s example.
  2. Sought to improve this world rather than wait for everything to be fixed in the next. Improving this world by concentrating on fixing the INSTITUTIONS rather than simply temporarily raise the living standard of people in poor countries, and watch money being squandered by corruption.
I believe he would have shown his hand in the aftermath of Operation Iraqi Freedom, trying to solve the problem with Muslims, desperately attempting to ensure that Iraq didn’t become a failed state so that the Iraqi people didn’t lose their human rights again. He would have tried to find the common denominator between good Christians, good Muslims and good atheists, so that these core values could be exported to the rest of the Middle East.

Does that sound like what you would expect from Jesus II?

Doesn’t the bible tell us that when Jesus returns it will be obvious and everyone will know? I don’t think it’s going to be an inconspicuous happening.

I don’t know if I would recognize Jesus. I hope that I would.

The really really difficult part is that we are supposed to see Jesus in the eyes of everyone and that means the homeless, our enemies, people in prisons, relatives that we don’t get along with, etc.

Many Blessings,
Shannin

Probably not. Notice that His close associates did not recognized him after His resurrection (Mary Magdalen, desciples on their road to Emaus). But, they did recognized Him during … breaking of the bread - the Eucharist. So therefore, I may not recognized him as a man (in a sense of a human being) but I do recognize Him in the Eucharist. On the other hand, we should recognize Him in our neighbor.

Perhaps it is obvious if only you look. If you can figure out what position Jesus II would have taken on the liberation of 27 million Iraqis from a holocaust, you can probably see him desperately trying to ensure that Iraq doesn’t become a failed state again. Human rights would be his number 1 concern. Or should be, anyway. Do you know where to look now?

The place to look was the Iraqi blogs. Trying to figure out why some Iraqis were happy to be freed while others weren’t. Jesus II has already revealed himself - in the Iraqi blogs. You just need to look. And open your heart.
