Would you recommend this book? I am thinking about starting to read the Bible and I would be interested in reading the doctrinal pieces this study bible provides. Does anybody have any trouble with this bible?

Thanks,

I use it and i enjoy it. I use my NAB to cross referance. but i dont have problems with either translation 😃

I have it and I think that it is a great Bible and resource. I have the leatherbound and find it to be very durable and the font is a readable size. (no squinting required for us older folks. Glasses may be required for the commentary parts. :D) I would think that for personal study this offers a great commentary and concise concordance. It is quite large for a New Testament only Bible but well worth it’s weight! I highly recommend it… Teachccd 🙂

While I don’t have the study version, I have the RSV-CE with that same cover (…I don’t think I have the study edition anyway).

It’s very readable, without getting rid of the ‘poetic’ aspect of Scripture. It’s my bible of choice for reading or quoting, because it’s understandable and still well phrased. Some, IMO, lean too far in either direction.

It also has a ton of footnotes, in mine anyway, which are helpful for understanding the role that the verses play in our faith, and cross reference. I was given mine as a gift, and it has the leather cover embossed with the icons, which looks very nice.

I just got my copy about three weeks ago. It is the RSV-C translation (which I prefer), the paper is of very good quality and the type is very readable by my 60+ years old eyes. It has notes on almost every line of text with longer sidebars, color maps and mini-essays. It is 720 pages in length which should give you an idea of how copious the commentary is. The commentary seems to be very orthodox. It is well-indexed and well-organized. I can’t imagine a better study bible. I would pay a lot more for it. It lists at$21.09 for the hardcover edition on Amazon which also lists the paperback edition at $14.93. Go for the hardcover. It is very attractive with a gold pattern on the cover. I haven’t handled the paperback version but I would wonder about its durability given its size (7 1/4" x 10 1/4" x 2") and weight. There is also a leather bound edition but I don’t know its price. Bear in mind that it is a STUDY bible. I wouldn’t make it my bible for devotions or for travel.

Yes, buy it! 👍 It is not only very useful, but it is also a bargin!

You can’t go wrong with the Ignatius Study Bible or the Navarre Bible, both are top notch! I recommend looking into the Navarre Bible and compare for yourself which one suits you. I like the Navarre Bible a little better because it gives more quotes straight from papal letters and the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. The Ignatius Study Bible might be better suited for beginners than the Navarre Bible.

Navarre is suited for all 🙂 Beginners…or old scholars…

But yes I think all three go well together and do not really compete…

Ignatius Study Bible
Navarre Bible
Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture.

Get all three 🙂

I received the Bible a few days ago. Now keep in mind, I have not read it yet so my comments are strictly on the construction of the bible.

Well, I get it and get it out of its wrapping paper. I wasnt all that impressed with the build of the book and then I get it in my hand and the cover feels awful in my hands. Very tacky, almost cardboardy. The paper is a beige color(dont like that either), but is substantial and has little ghosting. The book opens flat pretty well.

I left the book in the car, and I notice the ends are folding upwards, I guess because of the heat.

In short I am not impressed with it at all construction wise.

I may try to get a rebinding, but Im short on cash right now.

Keep in mind almost all of my bibles are goatskin or calfskin bibles, including a Baronius Press Douay Rheims I just got back from Macspadden Bindery with a semi yapp calfskin treatment, and boy is it nice. I probably like it just as much if not more than my Cambridge concord reference or my Allan Longprimer. So a bonded leather Bible may not stand a chance. To me it doesnt even feel like bonded leather, more like a laminated cardboard. Its disappointing in this regard.

Don’t judge a book by its cover…😃

I like the my bonded leather copy, If this were offered in calfskin leather (at this size) it would probably cost $250 - $350. I think we need a little perspective on this, it only cost $26.37 (at Amazon) in bonded leather, less in hardcover or paperback. I think the construction of this Bible for this price is very good. The purpose of this study bible for me is a at home reference bible for study, this is not a bible that I am going to carry around with me to classes, seminars, etc. By keeping the price low, Ignatius is going to get this study bible into more Catholic homes where it is needed. Now if they offered a premium leather option for their RSV-2CE bible, that I would spend $125+ for, because that would be a bible I would take everywhere. But the most important part of this bible is what is inside! 👍

In terms of study aids, it’s faithful to the Magisterium and teaches the intertwining nature of the catechism and Scripture well-enough. In fact, everything about the Bible conforms to the needs of Catholics anxious to live in conformity with the Magisterium. As such, the authors’ interpretations are similarly drawn from Tradition - namely the Fathers - and, as a matter of course, are rather worn out. As a commentary, this Bible fails in representing the concerns of the text accurately; see the New Collegeville and New Jerome Bible Commentaries this type of information. Likewise, the authors’ discussion in terms of authorship of the Gospels and Pauline Letters tends to refer to and thus only agrees with conservative scholarship, which, while not a minority is still nonetheless not the majority either; moderate and liberal scholarship is practically dismissed with straw-man arguments. As such, this is sort of a beginner’s Bible where you get initiated into what mainline Catholics believe. The translation choice is decent, but I would loved to have seen Ignatius Press publish its notes alongside the NAB and Good News translations.
