Would you support mandatory tracking devices on all new cars?

One thing about these threads; they provide good family conversation and a chance to educate our children on history and where our freedoms come from. How the founders of our country knew what it was like to live under an oppressive government and so gave us laws to protect our individual freedoms. How after years of living with so many freedoms it is easy to bcome complacent and let our rights slip away. What a tragedy it will be when we have finally become so oppressed by our government again that so many more people will have to suffer and die to once again regain the freedoms we so easily gave away.

Not only no, but HE…L NO!! The government already tracks my phone and internet use plus my credit card purchases. We are not wild animals to be tracked and managed by Big Brother; this administration is everything our Founding Fathers did not want for the new nation.

The old very dangerous argument. Let’s see: the govt. will track me going to work, going to the supermarket, going to my bank, my doctor, a friend’s - rinse, repeat. However, this would be very dangerous if I went to visit known terrorists, organized crime figures, the local dope dealer, gun store (multiple times, especially in a short period of time), known anti-govt. radicals, prostitutes and others engaged in illegal activities.

Since most of us do none of the bad things listed above (plus a few I probably forgot), the govt. watchers can slowly die of boredom from the mundane daily activities that law-abiding citizens normally engage in, year in and year out. They will gradually eliminate manpower since people cost money. Or people will begin to quit because they are sick and tired of following guys like me around.

Ed 🙂

I forgot to mention, criminals will figure out how to disable the tracking devices in their own vehicles. Better yet, they will figure out how to spoof the tracking device, so it indicates the vehicle is somewhere that it really isn’t. Only suckers like you and me will be trackable.

Speakfor yourself, Bob.

We should NOT let criminals get away…they should be shot on sight .
So, stealing should be a capitol offense in your world view? Or downloading mp3s, or sneaking into a movie, or embezzlement, blackmail, jaywalking… We should shoot all these people on site huh?

Ah, you have just given the govt. person(s) reading this thread a new idea, like “Tampering with this device in any way will result in not nice things happening and yes, we’ve installed a circuit that will alert us if any attempts are made to modify or disable this device. Warning: Removing the covering of this device by anyone other than a licensed outlet or service representative will constitute tampering.”

Ed

Absolutely not. I don’t want someone tracking everywhere I go. I like my privacy.

Agreed. Even if the tracking system were restricted by law and department policy to protect our rights, and that is a big if, there are bound to be a few bad cops and other bad individuals looking to exploit the tracking technology for nefarious purposes.

Here’s a much more frightening scenario which I think has not been brought up yet in this thread. What if the tracking system is hacked by criminals, so they can track whomever they please? Do you want the mob to track your movements, to know when you leave home and when your are heading back home, to know when you are at work, or to be able to find you any time, any place?

Yes, there is way too much potential for abuse.
Imagine the hacking of military systems, capable of launching nuclear missiles? I’m not worried in that I suspect that the technology being used is sufficient. The same advanced technology could be incorporated into the tracking device computer system.

LOVE! 🙂

The gov has always been watching. In my short 56 yrs…since McCarthy…Hoover…the Nixon administration…the Patriot Act, the NSA…come on…this is nothing new.

I don’t buy the arguement…“well if your aren’t doing anything.” My private life is just that, my life.

If you have a new car with bluetooth, wireless, Sync, On Star, you “have” a tracking device. If you lock your keys out of your car, you can call On Star or whomever and a satellite will unlock your car. A satellite can read a book on the ground. Law enforcement and government has technology that can “see” through walls in your house. Yeah, they know you are home. We have evolved, but not for the better in this area of technology.

Back then, it was our government is always right…and all the things I mentioned in the first line were “building…and building”…up to this time. No one said a word. Oh, yeah, but they were laughed at and told to cut their hair, obey the draft and get a job.

The chickens have come home to roost. 🤷

Conservative or liberal government, it’s all the same!!!

Have you paid -any- attention to the political parties in the last few years? Any at all? For you to say that I’m going to just go ahead and assume you haven’t been.

I should have said government leaders.

Breath deep
The gathering gloom
Watch lights fade
From every room
Bedsitter people
Look back and lament
Another day’s useless
Energy spent

Impassioned lovers
Wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love
And has none
New mother picks up
And suckles her son
Senior citizens
Wish they were young

Cold hearted orb
That rules the night
Removes the colours
From our sight
Red is gray and
Yellow white
But we decide
Which is right
And
Which is an Illusion

yes, Robert you do have a point…it all comes full circle doesn’t it.😃

That is why I am not a Republican or a Democrat, or a conservative or a liberal.

I think for myself…I weigh options and then make choices. I may not agree with others, but I welcome them to the table to weigh in… In all the time I have been on CAF…I have reported one person to the mods… not for their views, but clearly because it was a troll issue. I have been reported numerous times and suspended, but I’m a weeble.😃

Unfortunately both parties have turned extreme and shout at one another…until nothing gets resolved.🤷

Days of Future Past by the Moody Blues. I saw them in concert…great songs, wonderful poetry.👍

I’m most impressed!!! I never saw them.

I threw out all the rock, pop, jazz, and blues from my computer music library (just listen to classical and religious), but I still respect the lyrics of a lot of rock and pop, and I think a lot of it is consistent with Christianity in one way or another.

In this regard you are more optimistic than I.

That reminds me, did you read about those researchers who figured out how to hack the control systems of a regular automobile? The auto makers have put in all these interconnected smart controllers with no concern for security. The researchers showed how easy it would be to mess with the brakes, turn off all the dashboard lights and the headlights while you are driving at night, lock you in the car, stuff like that.

Computer security is difficult. Maybe someday we’ll get it right, but that day has yet to come. In the foreseeable future, I would not bet on the security of any remotely accessible automotive tracking system.

Robert…

Don’t you think it is about time to move onto another thread/topic?

Have you seen the poll results?

Your arguments are falling on deft ears.

No true American Catholic wants tracking devices on their cars. Judging from the comments so far, they are not very happy with any sort of government intervention in their privacy.

Time to give this this one up and move on to another failure.

Mandatory tracking devices could help a lot in law enforcement, but could go against one’s rights. Personally, I would strongly support such a law. We need better cooperation between the good of society and individual rights!

(LOVE, brothers and sisters!)
With all due respect, I think you have too much trust in government. Government leaders are sinners, too. And they aren’t all geniuses either.

I do not necessarily place any trust in the government, but GREAT trust in whoever it is that directly guides our lower world (without such guidance, technological advances and rapid population growth would never have succeeded).

It’s puzzling to me how Christians can believe in an all powerful God, but fail terribly in attributing the guidance of our lower world (the lowest of all worlds) to Him.

Romans 13:1 RSV
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

Tracking devices? You’re kidding me.

(In fact, the very idea of an “OnStar” type capability is one of the main reasons why I will never buy a General Motors vehicle…I do not care for a “big brother” capability)
