As per the current rumors, the Holy Father may be about to promote a much greater access to the Traditional Latin Mass (a.k.a. the Mass of St. Pius V, Pian Mass, Tridentine Mass, 1962 Missal, etc.). If this were to happen, and the TLM became readily available in your area, would you and your family take advantage of the opportunity to attend?

If you’re a single-person household, please substitute “I” for “we” in the poll questions, as applicable. 🙂 (I did try putting “I/we,” but it looked kind of awkward. :o )

Probably not. The reason is that a person of a certain schimatic group has been shoving it down our throats for years on another forum as the “real reason” to the “invalid excommunications”. This has turned me off to the TLM.

I said maybe because I’d probably go occasionally. My interest would probably be mostly for cultural and artistic reasons.

But it would probably only be rarely because my husband thinks the idea of Mass in Latin is kind of crazy. (He converted to Catholism as an adult.)

I’d like to go, but it would be a hard sell for the rest of the family, so we’ll see. If the instructions of Sacrosanctum Concilium were adhered to in my parish, I probably wouldn’t, but they are not…

I would not attend. I’ve been to one, I didn’t care for it. I prefer the Pauline Rite (in the vernacular).

I agree: rabid, radical traditionalists can be pretty annoying. It’s too bad that these people’s attitudes are now linked in our minds with the TLM.

I think, though, that if you went to a TLM a couple of times, you’d be pleasantly surprised, if not amazed and in awe of the depth of the spirituality, as I was when I first went. I didn’t know what to expect (and didn’t expect much, honestly), but was really overwhelmed at the experience.

It’s definitely worth a try, at least once.

I grew up with the TLM and was an altar boy during the period. If I were not a member of a cathedral parish where the liturgies are traditional and reverent and had to go to my geographic parish, you bet I would. The only reason why I don’t go to our diocesan indult parish is because the cathedral parish is traditional and reverent. I would love to see the cathedral parish introduce a TLM and I know I would not be alone.

I think I might go occasionally “just to see”, but I can’t imagine it being more than once or twice a year.

I went once to a Latin funeral Mass (probably a schismatic group, now that I think about it) and I felt lost as a goose in tall grass.

I’d go to the Latin Mass, if that was what was offered at my parish.

Otherwise no.

What the best thing about the Latin mass, which I remember, is that Catholics of every stripe, the good Catholics, the bad Catholics and the ugly Catholics, the entire community.

The idea of selecting one’s own parish based on one’s individual preferences, likes and dislikes, just seems totally foreign to me. Sort of like the Baptists I know, who travel half way across town to hear Dr. Curtis, when there are 2 other Baptist churches on their block. But that is pretty much customary with them, I don’t think so with we Catholics.

We already attend the Latin Mass and will continue to do so. It would be nice if it was a little closer to our home but we will continue to attend regardless of distance - our Mass is in our Diocese but not our town. Actually, we really do not mind the drive any more. It has served to make Sunday truly the Lord’s day and a family day. 🙂

Hello,

Yes if it were made available in my area I would attend. If it were at my parish, I would attend regularly, else probably only occasionaly as my schedule permitted.

The closest TLM to us is 3hrs one way.
If one was made available closer to home, we would attend.

I’ve never assisted at a TLM, would love to experience it. Although I would probably not attend much, if at all, if it were not at my current parish, which I love dearly. The newest administrative priest has really turned it around in a period of 2-3 years. We’ve been blessed with so many graces from our Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.

Pastor just did a poll and virtually no one is interested. He would have TLM at least once a month if it was up to him, and I don’t think this bishop would object, but probably feels there is no point in replacing one of the regular Masses if nobody will come.

Well considering that the only TLM available in my country is not valid, opening up the rite may make it available to my archdiocese. The nearest valid TLM is basically in another continent.

(Although I do find it strange that the SSPX Chapel is above a beauty spa)

I grew up during V II. I was an altar boy before V II. I sang in a children’s choir before V II in Latin. I quit going to Mass for almost 5 years because I could not stand the a’strummin’ and a’grinnin’ folk Masses. We went from O Salutaris Hostia to Bridge over Troubled Waters (yes, Simon and Garfunkel) in two years time. I don’t think you can imagine the profound impact this had on so many of us. So, yes, when I discovered that the cathedral parish was traditional, I petitioned my geographic parish’s pastor for a release. I was formally told in writing that if I did, he (the pastor) would not respond if I were dying - that letter went to the bishop. I have driven 20+ miles since 1983 to be a member of the cathedral parish. I sang in the cathedral choir for over 18 years. Anyone can now be a member of the cathedral parish and we have gone from 200 families in 1983 to well over 1500 families today. It’s not that the Mass is conducted in Latin or English, it is the reverence factor. We have 1500 years of choral music tradition. What’s wrong with chant and polyphony? When was the last time you attended a Benediction? I want to be Catholic! If I wanted drums, guitars, praise music, video screens near the pulpit, etc. I’d go to the Revival Temple down the road. I never “shopped” for a church but when I see the genuine article…well that’s another story.

Ughhhh!!!

I am soo sick… wife is four months pregnant with our third… we cannot get to Mater Ecclesiae and we have to put up with all this Novus Ordo mumbo jumbo organs blaring cantors screaming out their tunes over the loudspeakers, holy water fonts filled with stones since Ash Wednesday, homily replaced with Bishop’s House of Charity video, horrible vestments, wine glasses instead of chalices, altar girls… bad music that sings about us instead of God…ya ya ya…

Yea… I voted yes…

I live in Manila and understand there is only one Church that offers the TLM. That would mean a round trip of 4 hours for me and my family whereas we have a church within walking distance of our home where the NO is celebrated with great reverence so I would have no motivation to move.

General Reminder

**The topic of this thread is:
Would you take advantage of greater access to the TLM?
**
Please do not take the opportunity to turn the thread into a general “trash and bash” session of one rite over another.

As we approach one of the most solemn times of the liturgical year It may be well to ponder what one of our posters has written about the Mass:

“The Novus Ordo Mass is neither less authentic nor holy than the Tridentine Mass; each, as a service of worship directed to God, has its own intrinsic holiness when served faithfully and reverently. To the extent that abuses exist within either, they must needs be addressed; but the form is only that - an external; ultimately, worship comes from within oneself, one’s heart and soul. That said, any valid celebration of the Mass is a recreation of the Last Supper and cannot be other than intrinsically holy, albeit it may be licit or illicit, depending on the circumstances surrounding its service. The Church can and does judge its validity, as well as its licity; the former being established, it is an impossibility for it to be “sinful”. The sinfulness, if any (and that is for God’s judgment, not ours) lays in the disobedience of lawful spiritual authority by the presbyter who elects not to submit to the authority of the Pope…”

Unfortunately, after 5 years of listening to him, it has practically destroyed any possibility of doing so.:nope: In fact, I would change parishes if the one I went to changed to TLM only.
