When i asked Dawn Lyn, who played Dodie, whether the producers would have gone for a ā€œDodieā€™s first braā€ episode had the show lasted into the mid-seventies, she said ā€œsure, why not?ā€ given they had no trouble in Season 10 putting her in super short dresses that showed her undies to her embarrassment. She had no choice in the matter, she said to me.

Let me just say,the My Three Sons series I watched as a kid was worlds apart from the one you mention from the late sixties/ early seventies
 
Yeah. I came of age in the nineties with the reruns of the color episodes. I like Ronne Troup (ā€œPollyā€) but the show had turned into a poor manā€™s Brady Bunch by the end.

Dodie was obviously an attempt to re-create Buffy from Family Affair.

Yes I agree.I loved that show as a kid.That and Father Knows Best were my very favorites as a kid.
My Dad would never really allow us to watch Dennis the Menace as kids,he thought him to be a bad influence.
Fast forward.my youngest daughter and my SIL forbid their two kids to watch Calliou videos because he is too whiny!

Caillou has got to be the most loathed kidsā€™ cartoon in history, from the parentsā€™ perspective at least.

There was a show called Cannonball about a pair of long-haul truckers. I think we got it on the Canadian channel in our area (Channel 9). It was just fun and the characters were upbeat and likable.

I donā€™t really mind it all that much; but a lot of people that I know and and a lot that I donā€™t complain about it frequently. My kids are out of the target age of Caillou at this point, but I did my time.

Possibly as a ā€œcartoonā€ but likely not as a ā€œyoung kidā€™s showā€, I think Barney takes the cake there, at least in the US. (Caillou actually hails from Canada).

I actually watched the early Caillou episodes and those were actually pretty tolerable, might also be because at least in the US, the cartoons were interspersed with puppet segments featuring his stuffed animals, and those were pretty funny.

Also, the early episodes focused on ā€œslice of lifeā€ moments that seemed pretty realistic. (Other than the obligatory Public Television trope of ā€œThe White Main Character Always Has Culturally Diverse Friendsā€; though I donā€™t recall a Hispanic friend I do recall a black girl and an Asian girl, though itā€™s also possible she was Native.) The latter ones focused more on Caillou having super-hero like adventures in his imagination, that I guess would appeal to little kids but seemed way too formulaic to me.

ETA: Same with ā€œDoc McStuffinsā€, I actually really liked the early episodes featuring Doc fixing the ailments of toys in her backyard clinic, but the later ā€œMcStuffinsvilleā€ episodes featuring Doc and her friends apparently permanently transplanted to a whole world of toys, and an 8 year old kid running a whole Toy Hospital, to be ridiculous, even for a kidā€™s show. I kept thinking ā€œand what is the rest of her family doing while their daughter is off in another dimension, wouldnā€™t they be worried about herā€? They also never really explain Grandmaā€™s connection to this alternate universe. At times she appears as more of a fairy godmother type than a human.

ETA 2: I also got pretty annoyed by a rather obviously preachy episode that seemed to be written by a BLM member, featuring (African American) Doc being harassed by a toy police car. Now the car doesnā€™t actually have a skin color but Iā€™m sure the SJW types would ā€œcodeā€ the character as a ā€œwhite copā€ and of course the police car repents of his sins at the end. I do NOT like it when kids shows just bang you over the head with a particular Message.
