What is your definition of soul?Of soul
10 caricatures
That doesn’t say much.“the innermost aspect of humans, that which is of greatest value in them, that by which they are in God’s image described as ’ soul ’ signifies the spiritual principle in man”.
I am not that good but thanks for the encouragement.I’m impressed STT, you are playing chess with several people at once.
Thanks.I agree with your point (1), you probably expressed it better than I did.
We are discussing hylomorphic dualism in here where soul is the form of they body. Soul and matter make the person, substance. There is another model so called substance dualism where soul is separate substance and body is another substance. Which model are you referring to?Your point (2) interests me. In my understanding a soul is a spirit that animates the body and has the faculties of intellect and will. A human being is the union of spirit and matter. As a spirit, the soul is not in physical space and therefore will not be affected by physical things such as drugs or anything else. The drugs will simply make the body unresponsive to the will. The soul isn’t affected but the matter is. I feel the use of the word “form” for the meaning you intend does not make the issues clear to the average clod like me, as it reminds me of concepts of shape and size which are irrelevant to a spirit.
Because Original Sin has deprived us of that awareness. Our souls animate our bodies but our control is limited and faulty. We know that there are many changes in our bodies at each moment. The question is whether soul is in full charge of animating the body? If yes, why we are not aware of all changes?
Could you please provide a reference for the bold part?It seems to me, after studying the catechism, and some other works, that our soul is more for our consciousness, our awakening that we exist, love, live, feel pain, specially sorrow when it comes to pain. Our soul serves that purpose, specially what makes us different from other living things. I could be wrong though.
Yes, I am aware of that. Here we however discussing hylemorphic dualism which state that soul is form of the body.A merely living being is not conscious, at least in the sense we tend to use the term. Consciousness as usually understood is through a nervous system and sensory organs, and so we are only aware of changes in our body insofar as they stimulate our nerves. Thus we don’t feel our cells replicating, or anything like that. But I do feel cuts, as long as they aren’t in places like my knuckles.
What original sin has to do with hylomorphic dualism?Because Original Sin has deprived us of that awareness. Our souls animate our bodies but our control is limited and faulty.
Aquinas claimed that soul is form of the body. What happened for soul that allowed this change, the change being ability to feel every thing before the sin and have limited feeling after sin?Okay, but I’m not sure what you are trying to ask then.
He doesn’t say that soul is only in the charge conscious activities.
I didn’t say that either.our soul is more for our consciousness
…that our soul is more for our consciousness,…
I see. I also believe in substance dualism. On reflection, I suspect I may be referring to substance dualism, if you had to give it a name, but with the proviso that the natural state of a human is the union of soul and spirit. The separation of the two at death I would see as not what God intends for us hence the need for the general resurrection. I need to do a lot more reading on this subject to settle the concepts in my mind.
