I think it has every right to be justified. Whether or not it is blasphemous is up to the interpretation of the individual.

If entertainment is sacrilegious or pornographic, it is sinful to purposely listen to it or view it.

Riiiiiight.
Perhaps you could elaborate on your previous statement then?

If you are really a Catholic as you say ? ? ? ? , you are wrong.
Viewing Pornography is a mortal sin, and you may not recieve Holy Communion while in a state of mortal sin.
See the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition.

Blasphemy is a mortal sin as well.

Again how would you know something is pornographic without watching it first? Music videos are not pornography, perhaps sexually suggestive at best, but not pornographic. You are throwing the definition around to widely.

Good question.
Its common sense.
It’s accidentally viewing or hearing only a quick portion of it, and then removing from your view or out of your hearing immediately - without going any further.

Purposefully viewing porn is a mortal sin.
There is a difference between accidentally coming across something and immediately removing it,
or searching it out.

For more info on Porn and/or Blasphemy see your CCC, 2nd Ed. That is the authoritative teaching of the Church, - not us lay people.

Mate, I get that…but what does this have to do with Lady GaGa’s new music video and the line between blasphemy and art?

Sorry but truth is truth, it’s not relative. Justifying sin and trying to call it performance art doesn’t mean it’s not sin or that it’s only sin for some because it’s up to the “interpretation of the individual”
Sin is sin… truth is truth… period.

I read not that long ago that Lady Gaga spoke out in a half hearted support of chastidy.

Of course, it reminds me of the whole “I’m-a-virgin” Britney Spears debacle.

As for her music, I think its rubbish, so I don’t bother with. She’s like South Park, only out to shock people, no substance, just blatant stupidity and offensive material.

It can be justified in terms of its context. It is when we take art out of context that it becomes blasphemous. You are going to have to do better than just say this is blasphemous without giving me the reason why.

It’s not up to me to show you the sin in what she’s doing. Since you claim to be Catholic please look at Church teachings on such things and go from there.
If you honestly don’t see the sin involved here then you may want to go speak with your priest.

Actually I think the burden is on you to show the rest of us why we need to view this video to have any merit as far as Catholic teachings are concerned. Being that this is a Catholic forum, why should I as a Catholic see this video as a valid art form?

You are not answering my statement. But, whatever. I presumed the point of this forum was to partake in intellectual discussion on subjects such as these, rather than just bringing up a topic to which some say this is a sin and everyone agrees.

That’s what I’ve been trying to do. I think it is rash for everyone to quickly condemn without considering what you are condemning first. The point of the video, nay the story it tells, is one of a woman choosing a life of prayer and connection with the Holy spirit over the temptations of evil offered by the world. As Catholics, is this not a good message?

So how do you justify the half naked people in the black panties, with the ties to the beds, fitting in with Catholic teachings?

If lady gaga wants to be artistic, I encourage her to do so. but trying to be as sexually explicit as possible is not artistic. nor is presenting extremely shocking imagery for the purpose of being shocking.

plus, just because something could possibly considered art doesn’t give it a free pass and mean that it cannot be offensive. I’m not sure where that idea came from but it seems pretty popular. i.e. “this is extremely offensive and disturbing, etc.” response: that’s ok, it’s art.

what if lady gaga had a picture of your dad and she did all these offensive things with it? would we just say it’s “art” and leave it at that? of course not. I’ve even heard of people with child pornography who tried to argue that the material they had was “art” and they couldn’t be charged. what a crock.

I’m not here to debate you and justify the fact that you agree with sin because it’s a ‘form of expression’. The fact that Lady Gaga went on Larry King Live and made a point to say that this video is her tribute to the gays and the LGBT community says more than what the director’s obvious damage control statement does. Sorry but I stand with the Church teachings on sin & believe sin is sin.
The point of this forum is for Catholics to get to know one another, to help others with questions that may be looking at the Church, to pray for others etc. I’m sure there’s an area somewhere here that is for debate, but I don’t think this would be the spot.
I did happen to look at some of your past posts and see that you’re not quite in the Church, I think you worded it ‘in the middle’, raised in two different churches? That would explain your confusion on Church teachings in regard to sin.
If that’s the case, let us know and we’ll be glad to point you to the relevant Church documents 🙂
