Hey everyone
I am trying to write a poem for my girlfriend but I cant figure out where to start. I mean I know what I want to say it but not sure how to say it. Any tips? I have no clue how to write one lol

Why do you want to write a poem?

That is your place to start.

Hey everyone

I am trying to write a poem for my girlfriend but I cant figure out where to start. I mean I know what I want to say it but not sure how to say it. Any tips? I have no clue how to write one lol
Write from the heart.
Example:

Many years ago you said “Yes” to being my wife.
For richer or poorer; in sickness or in health
I thanked you then as I thank you now
you stuck by my side and changed my life.

Why do you want to write a poem?
To let her know how strongly I feel for her. I mean she knows I love her a lot. But I wanna tell her how much I love her. So I figure a poem would do that best.

So it does not have to rhyme? That’s good to know because that’s what I was having problems with lol

🙂 fill her love tank, 'dawg! If she is a person that feels love most by words of affirmation then maybe a poem is the way to go. If she is not, then your poem will be looked at as, “What did he do this for?” Don’t look at what you’d like to give to show your love , look at what she’d like to receive to feel love from you.

If it’s a poem then write simply from the heart.

When did you meet? Is there something recent that spiked your relationship to a new level of understanding?

Pumpkins, corn stalks, hearth’s warm embers
Autumn’s glow as night frosts falls
Silent stillness darkness closes
Save the racing of my heart

There you go; you can use that if you want.

Read some poems about love.

Try John Donne’s “Busy Old Fool, Unruly Sun”,
Shakespeare’s sonnet “Shall I compare thee to a Summer’s day”,
George Gordon, Lord Byron, “She walks in beauty, like the night”:
Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s, “How do I love thee?”

Read “Song of Songs” in the Bible.

Then write down a list of some of the things you like most about your girlfriend, along with some of the things that (based on the above readings plus your own personal experiences and other favorite love stories etc. you have read or seen) mean ‘love’ to you, and kind of put the two of them ‘together’.

I personally like rhymed verse but you don’t have to rhyme. You can write blank verse (like Shakespeare writing in Romeo and Juliet, “Oh she doth teach the torches to burn bright!”

You could make a poem in which the initial letters of each line will spell out a word, like this:

But hark I hear
Everlasting echoes
All embracing
Upon my heart
They drop like diamonds
You are my eternity.

BEAUTY.

You can write haiku, you can set up your poem to look like a heart–just have fun!

it only has to rhyme if you are Dr. Susse, then you can make up your own words like fandoogle 😃

I love you more than you can think,
you look good and you don’t stink

I got it! I know what I will write! Thanks everyone!

Heres what I wrote for her

When you need me I will be there
On any day at any moment
Never will I betray you
Dont worry
Ever
Run to me
Forever
United
Love forever

That is sooooooo romantic!! My db doesn’t write me poems, he sings to me!! lol…He writes songs for me and sings them, he has a great voice and is a very talented guitar player, so it brightens up my day when he sings to me…

It’s a great way to get those butterflies in your stomach again!! 😃

That’s so sweet!

He usually starts his songs with things like, “my past was a storm, but you are my calm…” Things like that…

Whatever your heart tells you to say to her just say it!

Start with how you are feeling at the moment, like if you are scared, nervous, excited, happy…
Write something like “Today I want to tell you something,
But I just don’t know where to begin,
My heart is yearning for you
My love for you is dear,
I wish I could find the right words to say
Everything that I feel
But I am stuck in wondering and questioning
I just don’t know where to begin…”

I don’t know but you can keep going like that until you find the right words to say and say everything you want to tell her!! 😃
Good luck and GOD bless!

Well, I like that, Bulldawg! I think she will, too.
Very romantic.

That’s all I can say about this Bama!!
This was pretty nice and clever of you! And very sweet!!

When you decide to write a poem, decide on a convention that you want to follow. It doesn’t have to be anything you saw in elementary school. In fact, you may well follow a mediaeval or oriental or any other convention which is not normally used these days. You can also create your own as I did when I wrote. Do the maths well, pick words and phrases that have a nice sound, give it a poetic syntax and a bit of flair or mystery or whatever mood you want to convey and you are set.

A word, though, if you decide not to rhyme: then you need to put particular focus on the melody. Count the syllables, recite it, see if it sounds as well as you read it out loud as it does when you merely pen it down on paper.

Oh, and by the way, why not put it on paper instead of e-mail? You could even get yourself a pen and a quill. Should you two end up married, a piece of paper with a handwritten poem on it will be a more tangible memory than a long-deleted e-mail.

If you want examples of conventions, I am very much fond of the sonnet, although I’m always given to modifications. Similarly, I enjoy a 14-syllable composition in which there’s a clear dividing point after the 8th, which is, admittedly, rather a long verse. However, normally, I like short verse, even as few as 6 syllables in English, for the ability to put a live content in it, without watering it down with adornments. In Polish, that’d be 9 syllables (I think I generally do uneven numbers of syllables in Polish). Of the non-standard things, I also like revisiting rhymes from an earlier part of the stanza, not like I wouldn’t rhyme across stanzas either.

Obviously, I’m not suggesting you use any of my above examples. The point is, get your own convention. Something in which you feel comfortable writing. Something which expresses you and expresses the subject as well. You may go for courtly language, you may decide to stick with English words and avoid French or Latin borrowings, you may decide to use elaborate syntax, you may also decide to speak very plainly. Your grammar may be spotless, but you can also write a poem using no punctuation or capitalisation and employing structures characteristic of your local dialect or the way soldiers or saylors speak. Doesn’t mean you have to do it the same way in every poem. I’ve done conservative versing with equal number of syllables and perfect rhymes all along, but I’ve also done long sequences of verses without a single rhyme or any particular number of syllables and yet reading well and pleasing the readers.

So, let loose your imagination and don’t fear to start over.

If you have things in your mind about your girlfriend… such as feelings and memories spent with each other… go from there, write down what comes into your head… or write down a bunch of good times you’ve had and such… and put it into a poem, good luck 🙂
