I was wondering if anyone had any advice on writing an article opposing abortion. I am writing for my school paper, the school is very liberal (socially and politically). I am writing about how being pro-life is more than opposing abortion, but also opposing capitol punishment, contraception, ect. Does any one have any helpful suggestions?

Point out that there’s only two congenital heart conditions that a woman could die in childbirth. And because of the harmful effects of abortion, it’s much safer to carry the baby until he’s old enough to survive, then induce birth. That way two lives are saved, and the woman remains healthy, rather than traumatized. hmc.org.qa/heartviews/VOL1NO4/PDF/CONGENITAL_DISEASE.pdf Look at the chart. Abortion to save the mother’s life is a lie.

Abortion’s harmful effects: abortionfacts.com/reardon/after_effects_of_abortion.asp

Write about Margaret Sanger (founder of P.P.=Planned Parenthood) who was opposed to abortion, but instead advocated birth control as a way to rid us of minorities. lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/feb/08022802.html And also in this article an investigation of this same racist genocidal mindset today.

Say that ultrasounds taken during abortion all show the baby fighting for its life, kicking and pushing away from the forceps and vacuum suction stick, with mouth open in a scream. And that babies can feel pain at 8 weeks abortionfacts.com/online_books/love_them_both/why_cant_we_love_them_both_14.asp

Also have a picture, if you can, of a baby at 13 weeks conception. The average ave of abortions: baby2see.com/development/week13.html And talk about how they’ve long been smiling, long been sucking their thumb, and long have had fingernails and toenails.

That’s just from the abortion side. It will be easy to convince people that other human life is to be valued.

I agree with you that the term “prolife” is much more than just being against abortion. It does include being against capital punishment, torture, child abuse, spousal abuse, etc. I think the best way to approach this task would be to google “abortion”, “death penalty”, “capital punishment”, “child abuse” etc. and see what pops up. Right now my personal focus is on abortion. I’ve found a lot of web sites, both anti-abortion and pro-abortion and if I were writing for a school paper this is where I would start. You could also check out the threads on this forum that deal with abortion. I’m not quite sure how you find them, though. There is a thread that recently closed (because it had over 1000 posts and that is normally the cut-off point.) It’s called “Prolife versus Prochoice Debate.” I think you could find a lot of information in there if you can ignore the off-topic discussions which always seem to appear. I believe it’s under “Social Justice”.

If your school is liberal I would assume that means that a lot of the students there are prochoice. I applaud you for your efforts. I’m personally liberal in many areas and conservative in others, but when it comes to the defense of life, I believe abortion and capital punishment are absolutely wrong. You might mention the fact that innocent people have been put to death and with recent advances in DNA research and forensics it’s becoming obvious that a lot of innocent people are in prison.

On abortion one thing to keep in mind is that you can write from a biological, theological, moral, and legal standpoint. I am most interested in the biological standpoint. One thing I would like to point out (not that I’m any kind of expert) is that you can’t prove anything from using biology or any other science. You can present data to show the prolife position (we believe in the sanctity of life from conception to death) but you can’t prove anything here. I think you have more freedom arguing from a moral and legal standpoint.

I also recommend the following books:

Kreeft, Peter, Three Approaches to Abortion,Ignatius Press, 2002.

Alcorn, Randy, Prolife Answers to Prochoice Arguments, Multnomah Books, 2000.

Beckwith, Francis J. Defending Life, Cambridge University Press, 2007.

If you look through the current abortion threads on this forum you should find some links that will take you directly to some helpful websites. I wish I could help you more with the other facets of the prolife movement but I don’t know any websites offhand. I would start with googling any phrase you can think of. That’s what I do and it’s amazing how much information you can obtain. Once when I was googling an aspect of abortion I was directed back to my own post!! That was kind of weird.

Good luck!!

Wow!! Good answer!!

Wow!! Good answer!!
Thanks:D So was yours! It’s so hard to change teenagers’ minds… (I would know, I’m one of them:rolleyes:) and facts tend to work really well. Vs: women should be able to kill their babies… well just because! Also they all start off with one standard line… no idea where they get it from!!! saying, you believe what you believe and I believe what I believe, and nothing you say will change what I feel. Sort of a nanny-nanny-boo-boo childish rebellion. Hard facts should change their minds, and a lot of them, mixed with the pictures.

Also… I think the website is abortionno.com… and there’s a video of an abortion happening that automatically loads when you load the website. I think they fade in with like a 10 second countdown, but you still don’t realize what’s happening until you begin to see the blood. Maybe if you cite this website, people will go to it and see abortion for what it is… but your call. It might shock them into seeing the truth, it might make them place the blame on you for showing it to them:shrug: idk, your call.

Abortion is used in China & India as female infanticide. Look that up. The numbers are staggering. Should incense everyone at your liberal school.

Hi again!! I’ve been thinking about the other aspects of a prolife stance. One good thing to check, via google, would be the “Innocence Project.” The project was started by at least one attorney (there may have been more) and what they do is take another look at prisoners, especially those on death row, who just might be innocent. I believe they have saved several lives. It is a great group and what they do is long and involved but you’ll find out more if you google them.

Again, good luck!

I wanted to comment on your comment here because I strongly disagree with you and think that your way of thinking causes problems; however, I also see that it would be derailing the thread to go off on this so if you want to discuss it further, we could start a new thread.

I strongly disagree that the meaning of pro-life should be expanded to include these other issues. “Pro-life” has always meant nothing more than being against abortion. When other issues start being included under that phrase, it confuses people, dilutes efforts, and possibly causes some to turn away from the pro-life cause (or causes them to be seen as not pro-life when they are).

I would like to applaud you for writing an article like that that takes a strong moral stand on an issue especially in a high school newspaper, which if mine was any indication isn’t known for hard hitting journalism.

I do have to take issue with St. Francis and what she stated. The pro-life issue encompasses not only anti-abortion issues but the other issues previously mentioned. Certainly abortion is important and probably the pre-eminent issue, but our bishops always say that life needs to be protected at all stages from conception to natural death. I don’t see how pro-life could then exclude everything else other than abortion.

Having gotten that off my chest I just wanted to say that you’ve gottend a lot of great ideas for directions in which to take the article and tons can be written about all the suggestions. However, I suspect your space is probably limited in the paper so you’ll want to pick one aspect of one topic and focus intently on that. Since your space is limited you’ll want to pick the best two or three examples to back up the few points you want to make. If you do that you’ll get a strong, written article that may cause a few people to think about their position. If you try to tackle too many issues on too many topics you run the risk of writing a rambling article that tries to do too much all at once.

Pro-life means supporting the right to life, womb to tomb as they say… it doesn’t really have anything to do with abuse and those things, which are quite different topics.

So not just abortion but euthanasia as well. But loosen the definition and St Francis is right, it does confuse. You can’t put all issues of good and evil under one cause… unless you just follow the Church:D

Hi; what does closet catholic mean I’m curious? To add a few resources, log on to the Silent no more awareness campaign website silentnomoreawareness.org/ (women, men, and heath care professional who have had/procured abortions speak out about abortion).
The Elliott Institute is also a great place to go for resources about pregnancies as a result of rape and incest (see their book Victims and Victors) afterabortion.org/

I can help with discussing abortion. there is a few statements that I use:

I refuse to choose between women and children.
The real issue is the lack of practical resources and emotional support.
Women deserve better.
No woman deserves to have an abortion.
“It’s my body, it’s my choice” translates into “it’s my problem”.
Abortion is a last resort, not a free choice (see silent no more website for testimonies).

And you might want to log on to the Vatican website and check out some of the Encyclical letters written by Pope Paul VI and John Paul II on the sanctity of life and the issues that you mention.
Good luck and thanks for doing this.

Hi Lead Me Home I think you have had very good responses.I just wanted to add this link to Rachels Vineyard
rachelsvineyard.org/
It is an organisation set up to deal with the aftermath of abortion for all affected.
The other thing i wanted to mention is pro choice people often talk about the rights of the mother.
I fully understand that. What about the rights of the unborn child to life, who didn’t ask to be conceived? Just my view!
Also I have great compassion for those who are pregnant & frightened & considering abortion.I pray for all those who have this difficult decision to make.I have great compassion for the families affected by abortion and I pray for them.I pray God will guide them.
Good luck with your article.
