Writing in the Bible?

Sorry if this question is in the wrong place…

Does anyone know if it is wrong to highlight/make notes in a bible? I’m not talking “mom’s heirloom” type. I have a paperback copy from a class I took a few years ago. I’m reading through it again, and wanted to make note of some passages. I didn’t know if “marking it up” was a problem.

Go ahead - that’s exactly what inexpensive Bible printing was invented for. 🙂
 
Go right ahead. You can even get these nifty little highlighters that are designed for bibles…they don’t show through the fine paper. I got mine at a Catholic Book Store.

My Bible is full of highlighted passages.
 
My bible is all marked up in various colors, notes and markings from my various studies. I have a friend who is a fallen away Catholic think I was horrible for writing in my bible but it is the one I read from the most and study out of. I figure it isn’t an heirloom and is my ‘study guide’ for life so I can mark it up all I want.

If you ever get a good look a Scott Hahn’s Bible as you watch Our Father’s Plan, it has highlights all over the place in it. I think the same is true of Jeff Cavin’s Bible too. I also routinely write in my Bible. Sometimes the notes you write in a Bible help you to remember some significant comment you don’t want to forget. To me, it’s like a form of journaling, and journaling is always OK. Also, recently on EWTN, Bob Fishman made a comment about it being OK to write in your Bible.

One word of advice: if you are starting out doing this when you are young, write your notes **dark **and BIG or when you are middle-aged like me you won’t be able to read your own notes – even with reading glasses! 🤓

actually, you will have to go out and buy a new Giant Type edition, so you can make your notes all over again. Tip, notes you make when you are old will probably be very different than observations made when you were young enough to not need reading glasses.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I think it’s easier just to get the LARGE PRINT Bible. There are a few nice ones out there these days. For instance, I’ve seen a really nice New Revised Standard Version in bookstores.

Also write notes in pencil, not ink. Coloered pencils work well if you don’t like highlighters. Depending on the paper your bible is printed on the ink may bleed through to the other side and then you have problems reading that page. The same goes for highlighters. Find a highlighter made for bible paper or you get the bleed through. You can also use a highlighter that isn’t real new and a little ‘dryer’ if you know what I mean.

My bible is an assortment of colors, markings and notes. Makes for interesting reading as I try to get through sections.
