I recently read this early Christian apologists writings, the first and second apologies( or defense of Christianity) and also the dialogue with Trypho. I found these writings to be amazing at understanding the early church and would recommend it to anyone.

👍 The writings and the history of the early Fathers of the Church is certainly interesting, informative and inspiring.

Yes, they’re a great help to understanding the nature of the Church Jesus left us. Another example is Iranaeus, whose Against Heresies (in the late 100s!) is already taking the trouble to list all the popes so far from Peter to the current time, and points out that this is how we identify the true church, “The church with which all others must agree.”

I received the gift of faith in Catholicism while reading the last few chapters (61, 65, 66, 67) of Justin Martyr’s First Apology, where he describes a baptism and a typical Sunday Eucharistic celebration.
