I was confirmed recently, and I had chosen saint Catherine Laboure as my patron. I had my Miraculous Medal, everything was fine - until I realized the people in charge gave me the wrong saint. And no amount of begging would make them change it.
I admire the saint I was given, but she’s not “MY” saint, so to speak. What should I do?

I am confused. What do you mean the people in charge “gave you the wrong saint”?

A confirmation name and/or Saint is not a required element of Confirmation, but more of a pious custom/tradition.

Same here; I don’t understand what is meant by “given” since it’s the confirmand that selects a saint and there is nothing in the Confirmation rite that “permanently” attaches a saint to the confirmand.

And further, I have found this to be a predominantly North American practice. “Confirmation Saints” are not inherent to the Sacrament, and we had no such notion when I was confirmed in the Philippines, for example, we did no such thing. I was confirmed with my baptismal name.

🤷

Explaination - there was a misunderstanding, they wrote down the wrong saint, they couldn’t change it for some reason (not completely sure why).
It sounds silly, but this was something pretty important to me. 😛

So basically it doesn’t matter that much? Okay, thanks! The whole situation was confusing.

Did you get some kind of certificate with your confirmation name? Is that what you mean?

It may to do with the Litany of the Saints sung during the Easter Vigil. The cantor should have the list a couple of days before the Easter Vigil in order to sing it.

That may have been because they turned in the list to the Bishop’s master of ceremonies and couldn’t make a change. I can say, having been in charge of confirmation in my parish, it’s quite a process-- we have to send a bunch of stuff ahead of time in a spreadsheet to the diocese. That includes the confirmation saint name. It is the name the bishop says when he confirms the student. It has no bearing on the validity of the sacrament.

I also enter the confirmation saint name in the sacramental record.

Even if they wrote down the wrong one, or the wrong one was used during the confirmation rite, it in no way means that you cannot have a special relationship/closeness with the saint you intended to choose as your patron. She can still be your patron.

Be at peace.
