Wrong for a Catholic to attend Evangelical "Harvest" Concerts?

I went to the concert last year, thinking that it was just a giant concert with Christian bands. And while this is mostly what it is, it turns out that at the end of the night Greg laurie, the person who is in charge of the Harvest Crusades, gives a talk and tries to get people to “accept Christ as their Lord and Savior” and “get saved.” Basically, it turned into him inviting 1000’s of people to go down onto the field and turn their lives over to Christ. This (the once saved, always saved) mantra is obviously against Catholic teaching.

I consider myself to be well-enough developed in my faith to not fall pray to this type of evangelization. The only thing I could think of that would be a problem is that I could cause scandal by being a Catholic present at this type of evangelization effort… the concert is this weekend and I would like to know if my concern is warranted or if I am just being too scrupulous? 🙂

Let me start by saying that I know absolutely nothing about the event you are asking about.

However, I avoid taking my kids to these types of events or even allowing them to watch “Christian” television because I don’t know from one program to the next or even one minute to the next if the kids will be subjected to an anti-anything rant.

The one exception I allow for is Lesea Broadcasting. I’ve never once heard anything anti-Catholic.
 
I’ve been to many concerts by Christian artists and sometimes there is an “altar call” and I usually anticipate such an event taking place and leave the concert when it begins.
 
I went to Winter Jam this year and loved the music.( ilisten to a christian station in the car) They too had an alter call if that’s what you call it. I didn’t have a problem with it They didn’t say anything anti catholic. I would go again
 
It’s better (a) not to expose your own faith to unnecessary perils, and (b) not to give bad example to those whose faith is weak.
 
I looked at the link on pc’s thread. There are some good bands there Mercy Me sings “I can only imagine” which is one of my favorites. Dr Dobson started focus on the family and wrote many books I love to hear him speak. Pc i would go if I were you. Take the good and leave the rest.
 
They don’t say anything anti-Catholic whatsoever. And the “altar call” (is that what this type of evangelization is called?) doesn’t happen until the end…

And yes, the bands were great last year, and I’d imagine that they would be good this year.

And to the person who said I would be putting my faith in “unnecessary peril”… I don’t think that would be the case. Yes, they do try to convert people, but only the people who are already not Christian. And I wouldn’t say it’s unnecessary, because I would be going to this concert in order to worship God…

Dumb question: Why don’t you just leave after the bands you want to see have played? People leave after opening bands all the time. If it’s comparable to a Coachella or a Lollapalooza or a Vans Warped Tour, people nearly always stay for just a few bands and then leave. Trust me on this- you really don’t be the one who stays til after the last band’s finished and the parking lot’s jammed and you can’t get home until 4am. That’s the only kind of “saved” you’ll want then.
 
The only Christian concert that I have attended is Casting Crowns. I loved every minute of it! There was no talk of “getting saved” or anything like that. They told the audience that they had prayed over every seat in the auditorium prior to the concert, which I found moving. They just prayed for our well being. I looked at your link – if it were me, I would not be able to pass up an opportunity to see Mercy Me. I also love the David Crowder Band. If you were bringing your children to this concert, then that could potentially be an issue, but you didn’t mention children, so I assume it’s just you. It sounds like you’re grounded in Catholicism, which is the important thing. My advice is go and enjoy! Mercy Me’s lastest CD which was just released a couple months ago is fantastic.
 
For what it’s worth, I say knock yourself out. You don’t have to only attend Catholic music shows.

I love, love, love heavy metal-it’s a passion. I listen to Christian metal all the time, I don’t think any of the bands are Catholic. I also listen to secular metal too.
 
Folks often worry about scandal, but even in a small town unless one is infamous for one reason or another very few people would recognize you or even know you were a fervent mackerel snapper. Go! Enjoy!👍
 
thanks for the replies everyone! I might not be able to make it this year, but in the future I think I have decided that there is no problem with attending this concert
