Wrong readings in Mass today

Today in Mass the wrong first reading and Psalm were read. The reader read those from next week, by mistake. The second reader read correctly, and the Priest read the correct Gospel. Does this make a difference?

I was so tempted to stand up and wave my arms til the reader noticed me to tell him, but it isn’t my church, and I felt as if that wasn’t acceptable, but I do wonder why neither the second reader nor the Priest stopped the wrong readings being read? It was clear from the looks on their faces that they had realised the mistake.
 
if it had made a difference, the priest would have directed somebody to the right reading. since he didn’t relax. even if it did make a difference, only the priest in charge has a problem, nobody else.
 
Embarassing, but not critical. Some years back I did the Saturday of the week in Lent instead of the Assumption. The priest even tried to cover for me by doing the gospel and adapting his homily.

I told him thanks, but everyone knew there were supposed to be three readings and the Psalm was wrong. There was no way to cover it :o
 
This happened in our parish a few weeks ago. The lecture was asked to fill-in last minute. She did not check for the correct reading before Mass. Since the pages were not turned back after the previous Mass, she read both of the readings and the psalm for the next week.

After Mass I asked her if she knew that she had read the wrong readings. She hadn’t but she thought something was strange when the responsorial sung by the choir did not match the text in front of her.

Notice I did not simply tell her she read the wrong text. I asked her if she realized what had happened. Not to have said anything in order to not embarrass her would have been false charity. I’m sure that if she is volunteer that last minute, she will now make sure that she reads the correct text.

Looks at it this way, you received 2 for 1 in the readings today!:o Seriously, I would have felt a little ‘something’ (not sure of the right word) butgood that they corrected it. Have a blessed rest of your weekend.🙂
 
A few weeks ago one of our priests read the wrong Gospel I guess he hadn’t looked at it when preparing his homily. Actually his homily didn’t have much to do with the readings anyway.

I makes no difference when it is a truely honest mistake. It is better to just let the reader finish and then try to get back on track.

Goodness, even if this was your church, I hope you wouldn’t really do that! That would be much more disruptive to the Mass than the lector getting confused.
 
This is why if you are a reader, prepare yourself properly.

When I was doing the readings, I always showed up just a little earlier and set up the lectionary. I would double check with the missalette in the pews, to make sure I had it right.

I would also go over the readings in the sacristy. There, our pastor placed a Scripture Dictionary, which provided correct pronunciation for the words. Some times they can look different then the way their suppose to be pronounced.

As will all of the ministries that we help out with at Mass, its important not to treat the job lightly, and be well prepared.
