But I presume you have some reason for desiring to wear the scapular…that there is some motivation.
The small scapulars used by the laity is by way of privilege…the opportunity to wear a miniature form of the Habit of an institute of perfection.
Normally, the habit will be composed of the tunic, cincture, and a scapular as well as a hood for men and a veil for women – looking to those institutes of perfection which have had scapulars for centuries.
It is not simply a garment but a specific garment worn for a specific purpose.
The question you pose is rather like a woman being given the privilege of a veil and her responding that “I am going to roll it up and wear it tied around my waist”…or a man being given a cincture and deciding that he is going to wear it as if it were a headband or draping it around the neck in the fashion one wears a scarf…
Or, perhaps to be clearer, to speak of secular attire…it would like a woman taking a skirt and wearing it like a shawl or a man taking a tie and wearing it as a belt.
Just to clarify points made earlier, it is often worn under the outermost layer of clothing but not necessarily. Those who are tertiaries would wear it publicly exposed when they are attending various functions of their third order, as with these lay Carmelites
