Hi,

Just wanted to know if I can wear the scapular on my left hand (coz I use my left n not right hand). l know that it has to be worn around the neck.

But was wondering if it’s ok to wear it on my hand. Or is it a sin to wear it on my hand? It’s a blessed scapular.

Traditionally, the scapular is supposed to be worn under your clothes.

You’re not supposed to be making a public display of your devotion with the scapular.

At least that was the traditional thought on the matter

🙂

Well, I’m not sure how you wear a scapular on your hand, but there would be no sin in doing so.

Wearing a scapular is a private devotion, which hopefully reminds us of our Mother’s protection and love, and leads us to a deeper relationship with Jesus.

That being said, the traditional way to wear it is around the neck.

I have my own way of wearing it that is a bit less-than-traditional, but it works best for me, and it’s a private devotion.

The thing is that I do not wear anything around my neck. To be more precise I just do not like wearing anything other than my clothes. Just want to remain very simple all my life.

It was just a thought to wear it around my hand (also as a constant reminder to not sin). There was no intention to make a public display of it.

Thanks to all of you for your reply. God bless.

interesting; the scapular is specifically meant to be worn underneath your outer garments

for males; it works to wear the scapular between your undershirt & the “outer-shirt”

females; hmm; i will have to ask my daughters; 🙂

there are medals that can be blessed in the same manner as scapulars. maybe just get a bracelet with one of those?

I have a St. Michael medal attached to the scapular (both are blessed). Don’t want to buy a separate bracelet.

I do not understand what it is that you are trying to achieve. The scapular is nothing else other than a miniature version of an essential part of the habit of a Religious. The whole sign value of this sacramental, therefore, is that it is a garment. It is not a bracelet. It is not a piece of jewelry made out of cloth. It is not a badge. It is a very specific type of garment.

The full size scapular, black, worn by Religious, in this case Cistercians.

I remember once, when I was going into surgery, I told the surgeon of my sorrow that the procedure would be done with me not wearing something that is part of who I am – and had been for decades. He surprised me by saying he had come to appreciate this sentiment in Religious upon whom he had operated in the past and, although obviously even in its miniature form, it could not be in a place that would interfere with the operation, he had no objection if it were wrapped around my left foot. It was still there when I came out from the anesthetic.

Not trying to achieve anything. Like I said it was just a thought.

Well, they are kind of pretty. If I was a girl, I might think of it, too. I don’t know, ask Mary. 🙂

But I presume you have some reason for desiring to wear the scapular…that there is some motivation.

The small scapulars used by the laity is by way of privilege…the opportunity to wear a miniature form of the Habit of an institute of perfection.

Normally, the habit will be composed of the tunic, cincture, and a scapular as well as a hood for men and a veil for women – looking to those institutes of perfection which have had scapulars for centuries.

It is not simply a garment but a specific garment worn for a specific purpose.

The question you pose is rather like a woman being given the privilege of a veil and her responding that “I am going to roll it up and wear it tied around my waist”…or a man being given a cincture and deciding that he is going to wear it as if it were a headband or draping it around the neck in the fashion one wears a scarf…

Or, perhaps to be clearer, to speak of secular attire…it would like a woman taking a skirt and wearing it like a shawl or a man taking a tie and wearing it as a belt.

Just to clarify points made earlier, it is often worn under the outermost layer of clothing but not necessarily. Those who are tertiaries would wear it publicly exposed when they are attending various functions of their third order, as with these lay Carmelites
