I know that the motto “What Would Jesus Do” isn’t of Roman Catholic origin, and i was wondering if it was against Catholic doctrine?

Hmmm. * Imitatio Dei *is of ancient Jewish origin; imitatio Christi is of ancient Catholic origin (notably, the concept is at the center of *My Imitation of Christ *by St. Thomas a Kempis - the second bestselling book of all time). I don’t know if anyone knows who was the first person to express this concept in the particular English words WWJD. But, of course, there is nothing in it which opposes Catholicism (as long as we realize that our own answer to the question may not be correct).

And therein lies the rub. Some folks use it to excuse all sorts of things that Jesus would never have accepted, like co-habitation, homosexual “marriage”, etc. all justified by LUV.🤷

WWJD? is a question right? So, whether or not it’s against Catholic Doctrine depends on the answer.😉

I blogger (blog defunct, I believe) commented on WWJD. His main point was that concupiscence would result in us doing whatever was the easiest or most comfortable much of the time.

There is a WWJD sign in the bathroom at one of our Catholic grade schools.
At the bottom it reads “Jesus would wash His hands.”

It was the funniest thing I’ve seen in some time. 😃

I’ve always thought it was a slogan with very restricted usefulness. If you are facing a **Moral problem, and you have a well formed **conscience, then the question could be posed. But as to bigger life issues…

Would Jesus have married my wife? No, he chose to remain celebate. More like a priest, bishop, or monk.

Would Jesus have chosen my career? No, he chose to go into ministry rather than mathematics.

That is why we go to prayer to determine what large choice we should make. They are not the same for everyone and not the same as what Jesus would do.

Well i can’t say much for the career issue.

But for the marriage one couldn’t Christ’s example as spouse to the church be an example for you in how to act towards your wife? (Eph 5:25)

so then couldn’t WWJD work for that?

In a moral or proper way to act toward my wife, sometimes (lay down my life). In an attitude to hold toward her, yes. But to marry or not, no. He made one choice, and it was not the one I chose. I am called to marriage, he was not.

I am called to act as head of the household. He was called to act as head of the church. But he was also called to be the just judge. I have to share my authority over the household with my wife (like the pope does with his fellow bishops).

As a consequence of my marriage, I now have children. Once they become part of my responsibility, I cannot easily lay down my life for my wife IF my responsibility toward them would supercede my responsitibly toward her (ie they were young and she had no alternate means of support). So even that must be brought into a larger arena when making decision.

And if I recongize Him as the fulfillment of the OT prophets, some of them acted pretty screwy towards their wives (Was it Ezikial or Jerimiah that acted out when Israel was prostituting herself to other gods?)

I think WWJD works for a personal (protestant) relationship with Jesus rather than a communal (catholic) relationship with the entire body of Christ: Jesus as the head and Church as the body of Christ. (rather than Jesus as he walked the earth).

On the other hand. When you are young (say 8 years old) and have no responsibilies to others outside how you act toward one individual at a time. WWJD works well. Perhaps it is useful to initially form a conscience but fails when greater things are involved.

Well, judging by everything I just read,…I suppose Jesus would act out of love, and compassion for whatever situation he was in.Technically there are some things He wouldn’t do of course. It depends on our station in life.
“THE IMITATION OF MARY” says,“God has blessed the way each person must travel toward sanctity, and you would err by thinking you could find holiness by seeking some other way.”
(chapter 12)

If you’re to say that Jesus would do something that was against Catholic doctrine that of course will be against Catholic doctrine. For the most part I think it is one of those pithy little phrases that sound good but really mean next to nothing. The truth is it usually comes out that Jesus would do what I want to do.

Exactly. Ignore my post upthread; I didn’t even finish my thought.:doh2:
