WYD seems to have sparked some curiosity about priesthood and religious life

If only 10% make to ordination or final vows I would be considered quit a catch.

Absolutely! One decade of the rosary goes strictly for vocations. And I am working on my son! I am hoping he attends WYD in Poland, as his grandparents came from Poland, and we attend Mass at the American Czestochowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA monthly. May God bless all the beautiful young people who attended WYD.

In an interview during World Youth Day, Archbishop Chaput said that after WYD in Denver the number of ordinations for the diocese alone, not counting religious orders, went up 10%.

After WYD in Sydney five new congregations of religious brothers were founded. All of the founders said that they were motivated by the vocation talks that they heard at WYD. One founder said that he was inspired to start a community of brothers without any priests, because he realized that brothers are the forgotten vocation. He got this from a vocation talk that Bishop Dolan, at the time, gave at WYD Sydney. Cardinal Dolan pushes vocations for brothers and he has increased the number of brothers in the Archdiocese of NY by 30%. NY, Boston and Miami have the largest number of religious brothers in the country. They also have three bishops who promote brothers as much as they promote priests.

WYD has also stimulated the number of women religious. There are some very young sisters who entered because of other young sisters that they met at WYD. The Franciscans of the Renewal, Dominicans of Mary, Dominicans of St. Cecilia, Sisters of Life, Daughters of St. Paul, Sisters of the Pierced Hearts, Franciscans of the Eucharist, Religious Sisters of Mercy and Poor Clares have very young sisters. Their sisters do not miss the opportunity to go to WYD, set up a kiosk and to deliver vocation talks for girls.

I’ve wondered how it would fare if they held a WYD in a place where the Church is growing like Africa, or where there is lots of potential growth like India or China.

Sadly the Chinese government would never allow something like that to happen. 😦 The cause for sainthood for Fr. Matteo Ricci, SJ for example has been stalled because of bad relations with the Chinese government.

But oh if something like that were to happen!

I think we will be seeing a WYD in Cuba in the not so distant future.

WYDs have always brought an increase in vocations from what I hear. A wonderful, wonderful response to the Holy Spirit.
