The Gift–(the man/creature that consumes sickness and makes people well). This episode is one my personal favorites. The concept of “eating” to be cleansed of sin is very Catholic. This episode demonstrates graphically how someone else can “eat” our illness and make us whole again, and even restore us to life by taking our “death.” Very, very Christian and Catholic.
I have never heard of this concept of “eating” to be cleansed of sin. I was under the impression that one’s soul should be free of all sin in order to receive the Eucharist. Are you saying that receiving the Eucharist cleanses us of sin?

If so, I think you’re incorrect. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the way we are cleansed of sin.

Would you please explain what you’ve posted here?

I think that when Mulder left the series the introduction of his replacement was a good move. It didn’t damage the series so much that it just flopped. But to be honest, I was very disappointed. To me, Mulder made the series.
I agree, the characters of John Doggett and Monica Reyes, were good to keep the show going. They were different. They had a good chemistry, but I enjoyed Mulder and Scully and their differences much more, and how they worked through problems together.

The X-Files was total fun for me. I watched all 9 seasons two years ago because I had seen only a few of the episodes during the very last season on television. Liked it. But of course, had missed the previous 8-1/2 seasons. So when the new movie came out a few years ago I had to see how the series began before going to see the film. I was hooked.

Of course, two years ago I wasn’t interested in Catholicism. So this is fun to think about. If I weren’t spending my free time pouring over the scriptures or the Catholic Encyclopedia or the Catechism I might watch them over again. I’m sure I will at some point.

Until then, I’ll just keep poking in to see what you’re talking about.

Hope

When ya’ll watch the series finale, let’s talk about the future of the X-Files …

(I mean, there is an unresolved issue … but I don’t wanna say anymore because I don’t wanna spoil it for you!)

Hope

Wow - what a cool thread! I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I am a big fan of the series (especially the character of “Spooky” Mulder because he reminds me so much of myself - a very good heart but kind of a fool who finds himself in bizarre situations and has no idea how to react).

I’m sorry the movie has anti-Catholic themes. One of the things that impressed me about the series was that Catholicism was an integral part of the character of Scully. I know she went to Confession in some episodes (if I manage to find which episodes those are I will post the titles). I believe she also wears a necklace with a cross, but I’m not sure about that. It might be worth looking to see if she is wearing one when we watch the episodes. I thought the series was very respectful of Catholicism, as Scully is a character who clearly has her feet planted firmly on the ground - well, at least at the beginning of her interactions with Mulder. 😉

I’m collecting the series but I only have a few seasons. It’s only been recently that I re-became (? - that’s a Mulder word for sure) a fan. I just received my Area 51 Warning Poster and want to order a good copy of the “I Want to Believe” poster. I know this is off-topic, but does anyone know where I can find this poster? On Amazon there are several, but they all look the same to me. And I’ve read some horrid reviews about some of the posters Amazon offers. I would like to get one as close as possible to the one hanging behind Mulder’s desk.

Thank you for starting this thread. I know you’ve gone to a lot of work to post the OP and it is very appreciated. I could talk about the X-Files all day! 🙂
Stick around, I’ll be keeping up with the series. Yes, Scully wears a cross. It comes into play now and then. Here’s a fanclub site where you can buy the poster. :o

I just want to throw this in for what it’s worth (before I forget it).

There is more than the series and the movie. There are also books and tapes based on the series. My limited experience with these has led me to conclude that they really aren’t very good. But then when I’m on a long car trip and can’t watch the series (or the movie) it’s very nice to at least be able to “hear” something that has at least some resemblance to the episodes while I’m driving.

I believe some of these tapes are based on actual episodes. The few tapes I have are not.

It’s a poor substitute, but hey, it’s way better than nothing at all. 🙂

However, to get back on topic, I don’t remember any references to Catholicism in the tapes or the couple of books I have.
The comic book series was very good as I recall. But I haven’t read them in 10+ years. 🙂

Hi to everyone. I’m making a general announcement in the threads I am participating in. My health has deteriorated to the point where I can no longer participate in the forums.

Of every thread I’ve posted in recently, this thread is the one I will miss the most. MarcoPolo, thank you very much for the link. I appreciate that and will check it out. I hope I may at least be able to be a lurker and check this thread out every once in awhile.

I apologize for leaving any questions asked of me and points presented to me unanswered.

I do have one request: Please pray for the safety of all unborn children.

Thanks, guys. It’s been wonderful being here and I’ve enjoyed it, learned much, and my faith has been strengthened.

I WANT TO BELIEVE!!

LONG LIVE THE X-FILES!!

May God bring us all peace…

P.S. IMO the character of Mulder was so much better than his replacement that it’s like comparing Niagara Falls to a dripping, leaking garden hose. Just wanted to get that in. 🙂

And IMO, the energetic, multi-faceted, respectful, humble character of John Doggett was so much better than Mulder that it’s like comparing a mumbling smart-aleck sarcastic authority-dissing adolescent to a real man. Just wanted to get that in 🙂

BTW, Little Soldier, my comment about “eating” was a very general statement. Please do not infer any theology from it. Many religions, including Christianity, associate an act of eating with spiritual benefits;e.g., the feast of Passover in Judaism. Yes, of course, as Catholics, we are to confess our sins and be absolved BEFORE we receive Holy Communion. But in receiving Jesus frequently in the Blessed Sacrament, we receive graces that help us to remain free of sin after we leave Mass.

In the episode “Beyond the Sea” when Scully has a vision of her father sitting in the living room in the “pre-credits teaser”, he is actually mouthing the Lord’s Prayer to her.

It’s mentioned on the DVD commentary I believe.

This thread fascinates me and although I’m not doing very well health-wise, I hope I can pop in every now and then to see what’s going on. I love the X-Files! Thank you to those who wished me well; I want you to know I appreciate your prayers and your kindness.

Thank you, Cat, for saying that Mulder is a real man. But I don’t think that’s what you meant, is it? I think you presented your “analogy” incorrectly (I’ll call it that even though it’s not really an analogy at all; it’s just a list of characteristics). I read it as stating Mulder is a real man, while Doggett is a mumbling, smart-aleck, sarcastic, authority-dissing adolescent.

I don’t think you meant what you wrote, did you? I think you have it backward. It’s *Mulder * who mumbles. Yes indeed he does. So do I. So do most people in the world. You probably mumble yourself. As to “authority-dissing,” may I please remind you that the government is part of the conspiracy and for Mulder to treat an unethical, immoral government with respect would be to turn his back on the universal principles of love and sanctity of human life - those universal principles that are also called God’s Law. Oh, I would hope he would always show disrespect for immoral, unjust laws; just as we all should! And as this thread is about Catholicism, I think it is very important to note that the series shows the unethical practices of the government Mulder is employed by, and some of the ramifications of those practices.

To be a real man, Mulder must act against the government, as and Catholics, we must do the same, even if our actions are no more than a non-adherence to unjust laws. I have CCC documentation to back me up and I will post it if so requested.

You implied Mulder acts like an adolescent. I wonder why you list this as one of his characteristic (and I do believe you did so in a pejorative manner). So let me ask you: How many adolescents would take a bullet for a person they loved? How many adolescents feel and demonstrate unconditional, altruistic love? No, Cat, Mulder is not an adolescent when it counts. He is an adult who loves his missing sister and his partner. He is an adult who is searching for Truth, as we all should be - especially Catholics! He wants to know. He wants to uncover the conspiracy. He wants to protect us, the human race, from whatever is going on (and believe me, there is definitely something going on).

Mulder is funny. He kids Scully about being married when they go undercover as a married couple. He kids Scully about a lot of things. Good for him. I kid people, too, and people kid me and it makes our lives here happier. Like me, Mulder has experienced a horrible tragedy; in his case it is the loss of his beloved sister when he was very young, and this loss affects his present life, just like my loss affects mine. Laughter, finding humor in trying situations, these sort of things help us to cope with despair and fear, and even if we just look on them at face value, they make us feel good. What could possibly be wrong with laughing?

Those of us who have been termed as "smart as*** look at life in a different way. We don’t stay inside the lines when we are coloring. We don’t incorporate the beliefs of others without looking at them with a critical eye, and if they fail that, we look for Truth elsewhere. What a dull world this would be without us! And, once again, as this thread is about Catholicism, I would like to note that I have always been encouraged by Catholics I know and respect to examine the bible and sacred scripture; to ask questions about our faith; and never just simply accept.

As I stated before, Mulder has a good heart. He wants so much to help and yes, he finds himself thrust into situations which would have most of us cowering in a corner like a bowl of jell-o, and still he fights on and on and on; trying to expose the corruption and the conspiracy of the government.

I’m not sure about Doggett’s reaction to this corrupt government or if he is even aware of it. But if he respects it, he loses any respect I would have for him.

The following is tongue-in-cheek. I have a dry sense of humor so I want you to know I am kidding:

Doggett’s name is appropriate. Split it up into two words: Dog and gett (yeah, I know; it’s not perfect). Doggett is very good at fetching. He’s not much good at anything else.

Thank you for answering my question about “eating” to be cleansed of sin. I agree that by partaking of the Holy Eucharist we are given strength to resist sin. My confusion stemmed from your usage of the phrase “cleansed of sin.” We can’t be cleansed of sin we have not yet committed (at least I don’t think so), but we can certainly become stronger in our fight against sinning.

OK - this is just a little thing. I’ve been watching Dreamland, in Season Six. That’s the episode I referred to before when Mulder changes bodies with another man (the episode where Mulder says “My work here is done. Have a nice day.”)

In this episode, two crosses are shown by the side of the road - the types of crosses people put up when a loved one is killed in a traffic accident. These crosses are covered with flowers, etc.

It doesn’t appear that it benefits the plot in any way. But they are shown rather close-up, in clear detail and not only that, they are much larger than any cross I have ever seen by the side of a road. They are also festooned with much more in the way of flowers and such, which indicates (at least to me :o ) that they are maintained by the loved ones left behind.

Why are they there? Hmmmm…

I think there are a lot of hints in the X-Files.

BTW, I did see Scully wearing a gold cross on a chain. It’s blatantly obvious.

Marco, I checked out the site you provided a link for, and although I can’t buy what I want for some weird reason, I saw the poster I want to buy. Someone on Amazon wrote a review for the posters Amazon sells and in that review he said the one to buy is the one with trees at the bottom of the poster (Amazon doesn’t carry this poster as far as I can tell). The poster I saw following your link does have trees at the bottom. Thank you - if I can’t access the website from your link, I am sure there are others. I just have to look for the trees.

Huh. I never noticed that. Is it in the first or second Dreamland? I’ll have to look.

Scully’s cross figures very prominently in the X-Files. But it is also the subject of some controversy due to a continuity problem.

In the 2nd season episode Ascension Margaret Scully tells Mulder that she gave the cross to Scully on her 15th birthday. But in the season five episode Christmas Carol a flashback reveals that both Dana and Melissa Scully receive gold crosses for Christmas. Dana Scully was born February 23, 1964 and she mentions that she is hoping for Hotel California for a Christmas present which would place this scene in 1976 or (more likely) 1977. That would make Dana only twelve or thirteen. In reference to the cross Margaret Scully tells Dana, “It means God is with you. He’ll watch over you wherever you go.”

My apologies - I didn’t know there were two episodes with the same name. It doesn’t indicate which one on the DVD or I missed it. I just know it’s from Season Six. I hope I got the name of the episode correct! :o

Wow - you’re really a lot farther along than me. I thought I was doing well just to find Scully wearing a cross! I’m impressed! 🙂

Please bear with me. It wasn’t until yesterday that I noticed I could play a DVD on my computer! But it’s still kind of neat that I found something in the very first episode I played. I picked that one because it’s one of my favorites; Mulder and Morris do that little dance routine in front of (and in the reflection of) the mirror in Morris’ bedroom, because it’s right then that it hits Mulder than he really is not in his own body. And then Morris’ wife walks in and catches him!

That and the vampire episode (with the words to the Shaft series) are my two favorites in the entire series.

I’ll keep looking and maybe I’ll catch up with you (nah - I don’t think that’s possible). 🙂

Actually I haven’t watched many x-files episodes in quite a while. Dreamland is a two part episode. I also like Bad Blood (the vampire one). Whenever there has been a viewer’s choice marathon on television that one usually came in at first or second place. But my favorite episodes are Anasazi, the Blessing Way, and Paper Clip, the the 3-parter that made up the season 2 cliff-hanger and the first two episodes of season 3.

But I’ve spent hours discussing the episodes with other online fans at the Official X-files forum. I still visit the place but I spend more time talking about 24 and other shows than I do the X-files. The x-files was one of (if not the first) television programs that got fans discussing it on the internet. The word “shipper” to describe someone who wants or likes a relationship between characters is generally believed to have originated with the X-files.

I confess to being a complete X-files geek. I have the I Want to Believe poster, a key chain, and a mouse pad. I even have the x-files theme as a ring tone on my cell phone. 😊 My husband and my kids think I’m completely nuts. 😛

This is funny because I just watched the end of Dreamland (Part I) and that’s when I saw the “to be continued.” I then spent several minutes trying to find Part 2 before I realized it’s on the next DVD in the set.

The part about the crosses (I watched it again and there is a third cross but it doesn’t show up for more than a second or two and doesn’t appear to be like the other two crosses) is in Part 1, where Mulder (as Morris) backs up to turn around on the Hwy 375 because some other agents are driving by and one stops his car to tell him to turn around.

It’s amazing how short the episodes are without all the commercials.

I ordered my “I Want to Believe” poster yesterday. It’s the good one, with the trees at the bottom. I can mount it next to my “Area 51” poster. I guess I’m an X-Files geek, too. I’m thinking about having the theme for the ring tone on my cell phone (or maybe something by Bach - I’m not sure). I had just started collecting the series about a month before this thread started. It’s going to be interesting to watch the episodes from a different POV.

God bless! 🙂

In Dreamland (Part 2) Scully makes the following statement:

“That sonofabitch confesses to Kirsch even more than I do to my priest.”

So Catholic! 🙂

In the episode “Beyond the Sea” when Scully has a vision of her father sitting in the living room in the “pre-credits teaser”, he is actually mouthing the Lord’s Prayer to her.

It’s mentioned on the DVD commentary I believe.
I’ll have to look again, I didn’t know that!

Ok, I’ve been behind on watching, but I had to share this pic. It’s from the episode “Small Potatoes” from season 4. It has nothing to do with Catholicism, but it cracked me up even the first time years ago. It’s not really Mulder (it’s a shape-shifter guy who doesn’t quite know how to act like Mulder), but David Duchovny had fun with this I think. This is how he smiles at Scully through the peephole.

One of the reasons [

Our Town](http://forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?p=3977077#post3977077) - Mulder tells Scully to consider that cannibalism could prolong human life by citing historical beliefs such as “from vampirism to Catholicism, the reward for eating human flesh is eternal life.” [paraphrasing]

To me the association he makes there is offensive. We know that Holy Communion isn’t cannibalism, and what Mulder says only seems to endorse that way of thinking.
