YES!! What bugged me were the characters of Mulder and Scully. I didn’t have a problem with the priest once I’d read most of the book. It was a stupid book with two characters named Mulder and Scully who were not the Mulder and Scully from the series (maybe they’re bodies had been taken over by aliens or Mulder had exchanged his body with Morris again). Where was the Smoking Man?*

*I read somewhere that the actor who played the role of the Smoking Man wanted Skinner’s role. He’s a nonsmoker and so all the nasty cigarettes you see him smoking are herbal cigarettes. Still, they are lit and I don’t think they could be innocuous.

As much as I adored the X-Files, it went on too dang long. It should have ended probably after the destruction of the syndicate and the whole black oil/colonizers story arch came to a close. The idea that Mulder was Smokey’s son was pretty goofy. Mulder vanishing and Doggett coming in, that was pretty thin (although Doggett was ok actually, liked Robert Patrick’s acting a lot), and killing off the Long Gunmen, that STUNK!

I was ok with the first X-Files movie, Fight the Future. That was pretty cool. I want to believe was just a travesty and a trainwreck. I loath that movie!

Sometimes a series is cut out for TV but not for movies–ask Star Trek the Next Generation! wowzers…
 They killed off the Lone Gunmen???
I didn’t know!

There is work going on to bring about a third movie.

I apologize that I can’t provide a link, but MTV News published a story and video on April 9, 2010, in which David Duchovny is interviewed and says that he would love to make another X Files movie. Perhaps if you Google, you can find it. There’s a place where you can post your opinion about whether a new movie should be made. I found this in a Robert Patrick online forum, and of course, all of the members of that forum were encouraged to vote to include John Doggett in the new movie if it is made.

I personally don’t think another movie will ever be made. The second movie was an utter bomb at the box office, and I don’t think the first X-Files movie did well either. Also, one of the main movers in X Files, Kim Manners, died in January 2009. RIP.

I do think that if another movie is made, the producers need to solicit the opinions of the longtime and faithful X Files fans (that would not be me and others who hopped on during Seasons 8 and 9) and use those opinions in creating the screenplay. That’s what happened in the Star Trek movie franchise, with “stellar” results at the box office.

And yes, I would like to see Doggett included in the third movie. Robert Patrick brings a wonderful “action” mood to any project that he’s associated with. On the Robert Patrick forum that I’m a member of, we’ve come up with several plots involving Doggett for the 3rd movie. Sorry, I looked but can’t find those threads. It’s been a while since we’ve discussed this topic over there.

Wouldn’t it be great if they did make a third movie and it had Mulder, Scully, and Doggett as main characters?

But if Mulder and Scully have a romantic relationship I would be very disappointed. 😦

I get the impression you didn’t watch much of season 9.

I did not think much of season 9 for some of the same reasons I didn’t like the last movie. My biggest complaint was that the criminals/monsters didn’t have clear motives for what they did. (Season seven often suffered from this problem too.) They just did stuff so that that Scully, Doggett, Mulder, and Reyes would have something to do to counteract them. One of the things that made the X-Files so great was that the antagonists were usually well thought out characters. You could appreciate their motives even if you didn’t agree with them. In season nine it was hard to like some of the protagonists!

If another movie gets made I think it HAS to deal with the coming alien invasion. Even though Fox and 1013 were clear that the last movie would be a stand-a-lone story and not focus on the ongoing mytharc there were many fans who were angry that it didn’t. The final X-Files episode, The Truth, left SO many open questions!

I am not thrilled by the apparent romantic relationship between Mulder and Scully but I am of the opinion that back-peddling on that would be a bad idea. Even if I don’t like a plot-line, I lose all respect for shows that change them. Too many (and by that I mean a majority) of the fans expect a romantic relationship between Mulder and Scully. Fans tend to be divided over whether or not Mulder and Scully should be reunited with William, who would be eleven years old in 2012.

I would like to see Doggett again. I was never thrilled with Reyes. I don’t think her character was written very well. But I wouldn’t mind having her around. I’ve always been a Skinner fan so I hope he’d be in a movie

I have my doubts that another movie will be made. And I’m not sure if I want one if it can’t be in theaters by 2012.

You are indeed correct. I think I missed out on at least part of season 9, although I’m not positive because I don’t have that season on DVD yet. Maybe when I watch it I’ll remember.

I agree. I think I did see the final episode if that’s the one where Cancer Man and the Native American woman with him were living in a mostly deserted cliff dwelling in the desert and were blown into bits by a missile of some sort. I do remember wondering what the heck was going on and being left with a lot of unanswered questions.

Yeah, I concede here. I just have a real hard time with the two characters having a romantic relationship. Maybe some of it is jealousy (over fictional characters!) but a lot of it is that I really can’t see a relationship working. If they decided to produce a movie, I would hope that William would have a part in it.

I’ve always liked the character of Skinner, too. There’s always that little question about whether he was on the side of Mulder and Scully (I believe he was but had to deal with “higher-ups” (like Cancer Man) whose presence wasn’t fully explained but who wielded a lot of power).
I have my doubts that another movie will be made. And I’m not sure if I want one if it can’t be in theaters by 2012.
I hope one is made. I’m glad I didn’t see the last movie but a lot of mistakes they made could be corrected. I remember the Indiana Jones trilogy where the first one was great, the second one stank big time, and the third was the best of all. But Indiana Jones didn’t have all the complications that a long TV series would have. The three movies were pretty much separate and Indiana Jones was the only character I can remember that was in all three movies. I don’t know if a new X-Files movie could tie everything together. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

What I enjoyed about the series (at least the earlier seasons) was that the interplay between Mulder and Scully was consistent. Scully was serious, level-headed, and kept Mulder grounded. Mulder (my favorite character) was funny yet serious about finding the truth, both about his missing sister and about alien intelligence, willing to accept what his senses told him to be true even if it didn’t fit with conventional scientific explanation, took chances, and went off on wild-goose chases sometimes. I really like the episodes which are all comic relief.

I say bring it! But for God’s sake, they need to make a solid plot this time true to the flavor of the series and not the malarky they spewed out in I Want to Believe. Wow that was bad.

Regarding the Star Trek new film, what a sad thing. They took the one serious, cerebral, thoughtful sci fi series that focused on the joys and pitfalls of the human condition and the limitless possibilities out there and turned it into cheap bang bang blast 'em up sexy punks fodder new millenium style. Barf! I adore and cherish my old Star Trek too much to participate in the new blather train wrecking of a legendary franchise. If it isn’t Shat, Nimoy and Deforest, count me outskee!

Of all the tasteless “hitler” youtube videos, the one where he finds out about the plot of “Star Trek” is at least the funniest one of the lot. He starts out happy because TNG is retconned, but then finds out the enterprise is built in IOWA and blows his nut.

If I may ask: why do you not like Scully/Mulder romantic relationship?

If I may ask: why do you not like Scully/Mulder romantic relationship?
Is this question for me? Even if it isn’t, I’ll answer it anyway. 🙂

Part of it is that I would prefer to have Mulder for myself.

Part of it is that I just can’t imagine a romantic relationship between two people with the personalities of Mulder and Scully. I can easily see a very serious platonic love relationship and this is evident through the first six seasons. Each one would give their life for the other. They do love each other.

Part of it is that, as far as I can remember, Scully has drawn a clear line. In the Arcadia episode in Season 6, when Mulder and Scully are working undercover as a married couple (and BTW I meant to mention this - Scully does not wear her cross in this episode) Mulder puts his arm around Scully’s shoulders when they are talking to a neighbor. As soon as the neighbor leaves Scully backs away from Mulder and puts her hands out, palms out. It’s clear - she does not want that.

Mulder might have initiated a romantic relationship but I don’t think Scully would ever allow herself to become involved romantically with him. And I have some doubts that Mulder would even initiate it because he does love her and wants what’s best for her.

Of course I’m obviously wrong because there is a romantic relationship in the later seasons which I may have missed.

Really, I would rather have Mulder to myself. Let Scully go off and marry a serious physician who, like her, gets hungry for pizza while examining partially digested pepperoni and mushrooms she finds in the stomach of a dead person she is autopsying.

Actually I like the character of Scully but I identify with the character of Mulder because I’m a smart*** just like him. I can’t help it. It’s part of my personality. I make stupid jokes and puns. Like Mulder, my sense of humor is very dry; dry to the point that others sometimes don’t know I’m joking. I mutter. I wear jeans and a tee-shirt all the time. I even have an M.A. in psychology and though my degree is in research psychology methodology and advanced statistics (which sounds very impressive but doesn’t mean very much at all) my specialty was behavioral psychology which I believe is what Mulder studied.

I also had something very horrible happen to me and lost someone very near and dear to me just as Mulder’s sister was to him. Seriously. And even though it’s a TV show and Mulder and Scully are fictional characters I do have an active imagination and I really like the show and like other lucky people I can fall into it and kind of live it while I’m watching it, just like I can fall into a book and become part of it while I’m reading it.

I can’t imagine myself having a romantic relationship with a person who has the personality that Scully has, so it’s difficult for me to understand why Mulder would have a romantic relationship with Scully.

Link! Link!

Please? I’m not good at finding my way around youtube.

Edit to post #72:

I forgot to mention something. Although Mulder’s personality and my personality are similar, I do not buy any magazines that are the slightest bit pornographic, nor do I watch movies or shows that are the least bit pornographic.

He really shouldn’t have been doing that. Bad Mulder!! 😦

We can share him. 😉

I agreed that they would but I do see the possibility of romantic relationship, just disagree with the execution.

I believe there was one episode where she stumbled upon her former teacher/lover, turning out that he and Scully had an illicit affair since he was married. I can’t remember what season but it was while Mulder was around…

Me too…People say that about my humor as well. I’m interested in becoming an animal behaviorist or vet tech. I like Scully too–and I see aspect of her in my personality. I can be cold and analytical, if you’ve seen my apologetics you might have noticed it. But I love the tension between her mind and her faith throughout the season, complemented with Mulder’s faith in the unknown, psychological brilliance, and cute personality quirks.
I also had something very horrible happen to me and lost someone very near and dear to me just as Mulder’s sister was to him. Seriously. I’m sorry for your loss.
I can’t imagine myself having a romantic relationship with a person who has the personality that Scully has, so it’s difficult for me to understand why Mulder would have a romantic relationship with Scully.
Why I like the Scully/Mulder pairing is that they complement each other, each pushing each other to see a different point of view and new experience. I imagine without each other, Mulder and Scully would be stagnant.

I did see most of the last seasons but I preferred when the romantic feelings were highly suggested but never acted upon like in “Fight the Future”. The execution was “who’s Scully’s baby daddy?” like an episode of Maury. I would’ve rather seen their love expression develop slowly, not something alluded off-screen and then right in your face (as in the series finale). With the character of William, I would’ve wanted to see how Mulder and Scully would handle challenges of parenthood, but nooooooo…

Oh no! It turns out I bought two copies of I Want to Believe! I know it’s hard to not double-up on purchases but why did I buy two copies of such an awful book based on such an awful movie?

I don’t know. I haven’t bought the book or the DVD. (I have FTF on both VHS and DVD.)

The only think I CAN say is that every purchase you make is an indication to Fox that there might be money to be made if they produce yet another (and hopefully better) movie.

The latest installment… :o

Detour - Mulder says in a comical sigh of relief, “Thank you, Jesus.”

Christmas Carol - Episode starts with a Scully’s brother’s wife setting up her Nativity Scene (that good old tradition started by St. Francis). They have the flashback scene to Scully’s youth when her mom gives her the cross necklace that you see throughout the show. Scully gives her cross to a little girl.

Emily - Mulder tinkers a bit with the Nativity Scene at Scully’s brother’s house. Later, Scully is seen in church at a funeral. There is a shot of the stained glass of the Virgin Mary and Child. The episode ends with Scully getting her cross back.

Kitsunegari - The Little Sisters of Charity nuns are said to visit inmates.

Schizogeny - Teenage girl has a statue of St. Michael the Archangel in her room.

Kill Switch - An Artificial Intelligence creates a hospital dream for Mulder with a Crucifix over his bed.

All Souls - (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Episode begins with a Catholic priest baptizing a teenage girl named Dara who is confined to a wheelchair. The theology of the baptism is sound. As the priest prepares, he says: “Baptism is the rite of initiation. This holy water takes away original sin. The Sacrament confers the grace of God, bringing the soul into God’s family.” That night the girl is seen walking and encounters a mysterious figure in the street, there is a bright light, and she dies in a prayer position. After the theme song, Scully is back in the confessional! She tells the story of what happened in the episode to the priest from there as they go into flashbacks. She is shown exiting mass and the priest calls out to her. He says he’s pleased to see her there more often, and Scully says she tries to go more. He asks her to look into the case of Dara. As it turns out, this girl is one of quadruplets. A strange priest visits one of the twins in an effort to adopt her. He has an upside-down cross necklace hanging from his car mirror. A social worker guy is introduced to supposedly handle the adoption case of this second twin. The twin is soon visited by the light figure again and she also dies in the prayer position. Both Dara and the second twin had extra fingers and toes. Scully gets Mulder’s help, and he is convinced this upside-down cross priest named Father Gregory is a psychopath, denying anything paranormal involved in another Scully-Mulder/skeptic-believer reversal episode. The upside-down cross priest says he left the “Roman Church” and started his own: St. Peter the Sinner Church, in honor of St. Peter being crucified upside-down. He has much Apocrypha in his church such as Enoch and the “Book of J.” Anyway, the third twin is killed in the same light-prayer-position manner soon after. We discover that the social worker guy is the devil who kills Father Gregory who knows the location of the fourth twin. Scully has a few visions of her deceased daughter throughout the episode. And later she has a vision of the strange dark figure who reveals four faces of animals. Scully tells this to the first real Catholic priest (not the one in the confessional, but the one who asked her on the case) and he says it’s a seraphim who in apocryphal literature mated with a woman and created four nephilim, deformed humans not quite angelic, and whose souls God wished returned. Hence these girls are suggested to be these four nephilim with their deformities and the first three made it to heaven, and the devil still wants the fourth. (It then becomes quite significant that the seraphim supposedly waited to take the first girl until she was baptized in the first scene!!) So anyway, Scully saves the fourth girl who also dies in the prayer-position, and she winds up the story in the confessional. The Catholic parts were fairly sound. All the Catholic priests are portrayed as intelligent and kind. The ex-priest was also a good guy.

I recently watched *Detour *myself. 🙂

I haven’t watched All Souls recently but I’ve always thought it was one of the more interesting episodes.

Thanks for sharing SMHW. :o

Also, I wanted to share with everyone this nifty shot of Scully coming out of mass from the episode All Souls. The priest called out to her to ask her if she had a moment to help. :o
