Pastoral care is tough enough already without having to counsel a woman who has been abducted by the government and told she was abducted by aliens only to be impregnated by them…LOL Her priest must have had a brain hemorrage trying to figure out how to guide Scully! 😛 Then Mulder’s disappearance, the death of the Gunmen, being kidnapped by the Smoking Man, getting cancer with a computer chip, what a ride! They’d need to call in the bishop to counsel Dana! 😃
Thanks for sharing SMHW. :o

Also, I wanted to share with everyone this nifty shot of Scully coming out of mass from the episode All Souls. The priest called out to her to ask her if she had a moment to help. :o

I hope this hasn’t already been mentioned. This is from the book The Official Guide to the X Files, I Want to Believe, Volume 3 and is regarding the episode Unrequited. Dog tags allegedly belonging to a soldier named Davenport are handed to his wife as she stands in front of the Vietnam Wall.

The religious affiliation on the tags is Roman Catholic.

Yup! Post 48. 👍

Next installment of episodes…

Folie á Deux - Mulder feels exhausted about getting monster assignments all the time and laments comically that he gets the assignment every time someone sees the Virgin Mary on a tortilla. Scully tells Mulder of a similar incident they are investigating of a deacon who “wounded” some people at “mass” one day due to paranoia over a monstrous presence. The paranoid people in this episode are vindicated.

Dreamland II - Scully sarcastically refers to a guy who confesses to his boss “more than I do to my priest.”

How the Ghosts Stole Christmas - Nothing specifically Catholic but a number of references to Christmas, what it’s really about, references to Silent Night (although Scully said they played it over and over again at the store driving her nuts)… 🙂

Terms of Endearment - Scully says “a demon, if there is such a thing…” indicating she may not know her Catholic theology quite as well as she should.

Milagro - Scully visits a painting in a church called My Divine Heart after the miracle of Saint Margaret Mary. The guest star proceeds to tell the story.

Biogenesis - Shot of Michelangelos “God/Adam” painting as Scully narrates the drive of mankind. An ancient artifact has a couple verses from Genesis (1:28-29) on it.

The Sixth Extinction part I & II - The collection of artifacts translates to a bunch of passages from various religious sources all together including pagan writings, the Bible, the Koran, etc…

Millennium - An episode about end times and suspects that Scully describes who “mangled Biblical prophecy to the extent that it’s unrecognizable.” Got to credit her observations there!

Here’s a shot of Scully looking at the “My Divine Heart” painting in the Catholic church from episode Milagro.

Next thing you know you’ll be telling me the Alien Bounty-Hunter was Catholic! 😛 or maybe Langley and the Gunmen? 😃

Orison - A sport-coated preacher gives a sermon to prisoners with at least 2 different crucifixes on the wall in the background. Later you see a Bible in Scully’s bedroom.

Signs and Wonders - Mulder and Scully investigate a fundamentalist church that practices snake handling. Scully at one point says: “Snake handling. We didn’t learn that in catechism class.” Mulder replies with the strange comment: “Funny, I knew a couple Catholic schoolgirls who were expert at it.” Shortly thereafter, Scully expresses doubt in the snake theology of this church. Mulder says, “I don’t know, Scully. When you get right down to it, is snake handling any harder to buy into than Communion wafers or Transubstantiation?” And Scully cuts him off “Or believing in flying saucers for that matter.” Then Mulder errs in saying that Scully’s Catholic faith and this fundamentalist have a faith that “seems to be based on the same book.” He must not have read the Catechism paragraph that says Christianity is not a religion of the book. The episode does suggest that the snake handler is legit.

What’s ironic about the Mulder “schoolgirls” comment is that right when he says it, you can clearly see a member of the film crew on the left side of the screen probably hoisting a microphone. :doh2: Maybe God’s way of saying they goofed with that line? 😛

I do believe that Mulder’s comment about the Catholic schoolgirls was a sexual reference (“snake” handlers)? Ya might have to think about it. It shouldn’t have been used.

OK, I’m sure this has been covered before (although I beat you on Dreamland 2 where Scully remarks that Spender confesses to Kersh more than she confesses to her priest. So there! :D). In All Souls there is a mistake. Scully is in Confession and tells the priest “But the sin of which I’m guilty of, I’m not sure you can offer forgiveness.” This is so poorly worded and strongly implies that the priest is the one who forgives the sin, not God.

Bad writer! :tsktsk:

It’s weird to me to see Scully wearing lighter colors. She usually wears black, or so it seems to me. I like the lighter colors much better.

Yeah I know this is a silly thing to say and who cares anyway, but I’m bored and trying to pass the time and I think I’ve killed most of the threads I’m on so I’m posting a dumb comment just because.🤷

Frohike wanted to become a priest but he has a real problem with lustful thoughts (Scully, Invisigoth, etc.).

Sorry. I’m still bored. :o

Share X-Files thoughts any time!!! 😃
Thank you.

I was wondering if anyone else has a copy of The Duchovny Files by Paul Mitchell. I can’t scan photos and there is a photo in there which I think is really funny. It’s of both Duchovny and Anderson. It’s not an X-Files photo per se, but I laugh every time I see it.

Not familiar with that one. Does it have Scully in lighter colors for you? 😛
It looks like you can get it for cheap on Amazon.

Lol, that’s where I got it! I wondered if someone had it and could scan a particular photo to share. I usually don’t buy books about celebrities and I don’t even recognize the names of most celebrities printed on the front pages of those newspapers that always seem to be at the checkout in the grocery store. But this book was cheap and it’s really very good; well written and not what I expected at all.

Scully doesn’t have those light colors in the book. 😃 It’s weird how Scully is usually presented as being dressed very well. Even in Arcadia she was dressed almost too formally, whereas Mulder usually wears jeans and a tee-shirt while not working (which is more to my liking). I guess Scully wouldn’t get into gardening or other activities which get people dirty.

I guess I’m going to have to break down and hook up my printer/scanner. It’s almost impossible to live without it. 🤷

Are you able to post the pic?

Also, you are right, Scully dresses down far less than Mulder. Even her pajamas are upscale. I’m in season 7 right now and her look is the extra-short hair with the long overcoat. This is my cell phone wallpaper right now. 🙂

There may not be a show that knew how to utilize flashlights better than The X-Files. 😃

Fun thread- we just started watching this using netflix! We still are in season one- I wasnt a christion or Cathilic when the series first aired so its interesting to watch it again as a Catholic.
Slightly off topic- do you think this show is totally inappropriate for a 12year old girl, besides being scary? (obviousely the pedophile prist is out of the question)

Other than being scary, no. It’s fine for a 12 year old girl. Language is minimal. Off the top of my head there’s a b-word in Beyond the Sea from season 1 and in One Breath from season 2. Sexual content is minimal. There might be 1 or 2 episodes you might proceed with caution with on the sexuality such as (off the top of my head) Gender Bender from season 1, and Avatar from season 3.

Other than that, it’s really a mystery show and character driven between Mulder and Scully.
:o

I teach sixth grade, 12 year olds. X Files is fine IMO.

But I must point out to folks on this thread that the X Files is not one huge endorsement of Catholicism. Keep in mind the episodes with that GIANT alien ship they dug up in Africa that supposedly aliens came to earth and fathered all the religions of this planet from Islam to Christianity, etc. Chris Carter was not in love with Catholicism IMO.

The X Files and many shows and movies in the sci fi and horror genre flirt with Catholicism. Whether it’s the Exorcist or Lost Boys, Kolchak the Night Stalker, John Carpenter movies or the X Files, the Catholic Church is more mystical and sacramental and the oldest Christian faith so it’s great for fighting vampires or metaphysical phenomena. Face it, Baptists aren’t exactly great for horror and sci fi.

John Carpenter throws in Catholic priests in a ton of his flicks, like Carter, but he often has a cynical note to them and tone.

I think for one thing, Dana Sculley is obviously Irish in background. For God’s sake, look at her. She had to be a Catholic! 😛 And secondly, it’s just more fun to play with Catholic mythos on TV than the others. But was the X Files a big pro-Catholic love fest? No. I think it was more alien and science related and cynical to religion if anything. Just speculative.
