X Files fans?

What a great idea for a thread. I had an obsession with The X files. I was a Gillian Anderson fan, much to the she-grin of my DW. 🙂

I liked Robert Patrick, but was defiantly a David Duchovny, fan. The best part of the series were the Lone Gunman. They made the show fun! I loved the episodes they were part of.

I don’t thing I can narrow anything down to just one favorite. The last episode was my favorite. Just seeing the cigarette smoking man get it in the end was good for the soul.

I applauded the fact that Chris Carter wrote Catholicism into Scully’s character.

OK there was one of my favorite episodes was the one David Duchovny,wrote and directed. It was about the alien that morphed into an African American baseball player. The show ends with Mulder teaching Scully how to hit the ball. It was a very clever episode.
 
This is perfect. I’ve spent years trying to discern whether I should return to the Church, and my first post at CA is on an X-Files thread! Shows where my priorities lie.🙂 As far as favorite episodes, I submit these for your consideration:

Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose- Peter Boyle can see everyone’s death, including his own.

Jose Chung’s “From Outer Space”- funny from beginning to end, particularly the very end, where Chung describes how pathetic Mulder’s life is. Cameos by Alex Trebek and Jesse Ventura.

The aforementioned “Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man”- starts off very seriously but ends amusingly with Spender controlling everything from the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team to the outcomes of Super Bowls. Then there’s his hilarious “life is like a box of chocolates” rant at the end.

Kaddish- a Jewish woman who’s fiance was murdered uses mysticism to bring him back to life-sort of, if you’re into mud. This one was pretty creepy but in a good way.

These are a handful of my favorites from the early years.

I think that’s what irritated me about the Mulder plotline. So much of it was his grumpy contention that the FBI had a big conspiracy going to hide all the “evidence” of alien activity. This, to me, is the stuff of crazy uncles at the annual family Christmas dinner. Conspiracy theories are fun to chat about while you’re standing in the line for hours at the DMV. But to make a whole plot about them is kind of pathetic, IMO.

I preferred the well-written X-Files stories that brought up memories of Twilight Zone; e.g, “John Doe,” a great Doggett episode in Season 9. I know there were some Mulder/Scully episodes written like this, too.

I agree with these points. I was like 13 years old when I start watching X-files, I saw it from the very first episode.
At first I thought the alien thing was good but as I got a bit older I grew bored.

Then there was a point where the show seemed that it was heading away from the “alien thing” and making it look more like a secret genetic/biological human experiments “battles” between the US, Russia etc. and I thought that was more interesting. I thought it was more plausible, lol. It got my interest for awhile. Like with that little genius kid who had powers and had all his DNA “active”. Sorry I can’t remember the episode names.

But then they went back to the “aliens do exist, abductions, invasions” etc. and I lost interest again.

My favorite episode by far is Post-Modern Prometheus. I really enjoy the cinematography in it, as well as the plot twists. Every time I watch it, I catch something new. Of course, that is true about most of the episodes. I found it helps to watch the “conspiracy” episodes with Smoking Man with the closed captions on. It is easy to miss things otherwise.

I agree that “The Post Modern Prometheus” is one of the best episodes, except for this one nagging fact. The mothers of these “animal children” for lack of a better term, were inseminated against their will. Same thing for “Small Potatoes”. I would appreciate any (name removed by moderator)ut. Thanks.

I agree that it’s irritating that these two episodes that are otherwise very clever and funny gloss over what is objectively rape. It’s easy to watch these episodes and forget anything wrong actually happened since the mothers/parents all wanted their babies. (In Small Potatoes we never find out what the parents ultimately think about their babies after they get over the shock of learning they were fathered by Eddie.)

Of course the X-files managed to poke fun at plenty of other subjects that really weren’t funny at all.

I guess in my case I’m actually a mytharc fan. My favorite episodes are the those in the Anasazi triology: Anasazi, the Blessing Way, and Paper Clip.
 
I’m a huge x-files fan. My fav episode is
“Beyond the Sea” - Scully miraculously sees her father in her living room chair praying Psalm 23, just moments before she recieves the phone call that he has passed away. Later the duo encounter an encarcerated serial killer who claims to be a psychic who can channel the spirits. Mulder tries to use him to catch an active serial killer, but he refuses to believe in the afterlife and is held back. For once it is Scully who is not the skeptic…

I thought this episode was brilliant and it came very early in the show. It was the episode when they decided to make Scully 3dimensional as a character by exploring her beliefs, including her catholocism.
 
Some of my favorite episodes:

“Two Fathers / One Son” – the season six ‘big reveal’ that finally explained the conspiracy (even though we already had it figured out).

“Blood” – conspirators scientifically trigger ‘random’ murders to distract the public from what’s really going on in society

“Wetwired” – subliminal messages in cable TV

“Nisei / 731” – WWII medical atrocities connected to alien autopsies

“Triangle” – where Mulder gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle and ends up on a ship seized by Nazis on the eve of WWII

“X-Cops” – the epsiode done in the style of the TV show ‘Cops’ documenting a night of Mulder and Scully investigating weird crimes

The worst episodes were the two that Duchovny wrote – the baseball one and the dreaded “Hollywood A.D.” In contrast, the episode Gillian Anderson wrote, where Scully explores holistic medicine, was awesome. Oh, actually the all-time worst episode was “First Person Shooter,” the one where an advanced videogame character comes to life. I still don’t know how that script got approved.

About the jerkhood of Mulder – I always found it irking that, if you read inverviews, David Duchovny comes across as a jerk in real life while Nicholas Lea, who played vicious traitor Krychek, is about the nicest guy in the world. I guess that means they both are excellent actors.

Nope, I don’t believe in aliens from other planets visiting Earth. The distances are just too vast. I do accept the fact that there are, literally, “unidentified flying objects” – not spaceships, but flying objects which are unidentified. I think they are just something that we simply don’t understand yet – like 200 years ago, many educated people thought meteors were foolish myths because science didn’t yet understand them. Doesn’t mean they are bugaboos from outer space.

Got no problem believing in government conspiracies, though. I’m sure there are some real-life Cancer Men – or more likely, Morris Fletchers — putting in the fix behind the scenes. That’s why episodes like “Blood” an “Wetwired” always scared me more than the monster-of-the-week ones.

Sadly, I’m with you on the government conspiracies…

Did you ever notice many people have no problem believing in aliens from outer space but don’t believe in angels and demons? I don’t believe in aliens because I believe humans are the pinnacle of God’s creation, since we are created in His image, and therefore anything else out there (if there is anything else out there) is likely to be not the intelligent, powerful aliens as imagined and depicted in movies and TV, but rather lesser than humans.

I do believe in angels and demons – I believe they are all around us battling for us.
 
Yes, I have noticed that some of the same people who reject the Judeo-Christian worldview as primitive myth have no problem accepting claims of other bizarre phenomena on scant evidence – such as astrology, reincarnation, ancient astronauts, Annunaki, Atlantis, hollow earth aliens … basically anything that sounds like it would make a good cheesy Saturday afternoon sci-fi movie (possibly on a double bill with my namesake).

They played up this contrast on the X- Files. Mulder was willing to accept any far-out truth on relatively little evidence and Scully was skeptical, except in cases involving possible religious phenomenon, where suddenly their roles would reverse : Mulder became the scoffing skeptic and Scully the one open to broader possibilities.
 
If I may be permitted, I’d like to submit a couple more episodes for considertion as favorites:

Bad Blood- Mulder and Scully give seperate accounts of events leading to Mulder’s “killing” a vampire. I particulary like the part where Mulder has Scully enamored of the Sheriff, played by Luke Wilson.

Arcadia- Mulder and Scully go undercover as husband and wife (Rob and Laura “Petrie- like the dish”) in the perfect community with all of it’s rules only to discover that the head of the community can summon up a Tibetan “mud monster” to kill anyone who doesn’t follow those rules.

I too found this interesting. Whenever they’d start talking about Scully’s Catholicism, I would get nervous, figuring they’d start bashing it, but it seems like they actually gave it (and her beliefs) more respect than most shows on TV.

I think Bad Blood is in just about every x-phile’s top ten list.

I also like *Detour. *It’s not as good as some but I loved how Mulder was so horrified by the thought of attending the team building conference with agents Kinsley and Stonecypher. (I’d be horrified too, if I had to attend one of those.) It’s also the one where Scully sings Joy to the World (as opposed to Bad Blood where Mulder sings the theme song for Shaft).

I do remember it. Hilarious. Didn’t he end that sentence with “woman!”?

I also like the reaction of Mulder when Scully comes out of the bathroom with the green “mask” on. Also, when Scully kicks him out of the bedroom and Mulder replies “The thrill is gone”.

I understand the concern about the coerced insemination, but I am more impressed by the fact that the children were not aborted and, in fact, at the end of Post Modern Prometheus, several women appear on a talk show and speak of how much they love their children. I thought it was a good pro-life message.
