now, halloween is definitely a religious holiday. at least, it isn’t a federal holiday.

ergo: christmas is a secular holiday. so when people insist on “happy holidays” it is an over-correction, like the plural octopi (octopus comes from greek, not latin, so octopuses is actually more correct, or even octopodes).Popular aspects of the holiday include decorations, emphasis on family togetherness, and gift giving. Designated a federal holiday by Congress and President Ulysses S. Grant in 1870.
