I recently read that the Catholic church has decided to stop using the name Yahweh in mass. To be honest, I was quite shocked by the news and I don’t understand why they would do this. There are quite a few nice church songs that reference Yahweh and isn’t the term Yahweh mentioned in the bible?

Welcome to CAF! 🙂

This gives the reason:
Aug. 13, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican has ruled that the Name of God, commonly rendered as “Yahweh,” should not be pronounced in the Catholic liturgy.
The Vatican directive will not require any changes in the language of liturgy, since the Name of God is not spelled out in any authorized translation of the Roman Missal. However some hymns may be deemed inappropriate for liturgical use.
The Congregation for Divine Worship, in issuing the new directive, reminds bishops that in the Hebrew tradition, which the early Christians adopted, the faithful avoided pronouncing the Name of God. The Vatican directive explains that "as an expression of the infinite greatness and majesty of God, it was held to be unpronounceable."
In place of the Name of God, pious Hebrews used the four-letter tetragammaton YHWH, or substituted the terms “Adonai” or “the Lord.” The first Christians continued this practice, the Vatican notes.
The Congregation for Divine Worship observes that the invocation of “the Lord” in Scriptural text follows this practice. Thus when St. Paul prays that “every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,” the Vatican letter says that his statement “corresponds exactly to a proclamation of [Christ’s] divinity.”. . . .

there are several reasons this was done.B16- emminent scholar that he is, knows even though mentioned in the Bible, Yahweh, was considered so sacred by the Israelites that they used the word’God’ as it’s replacement or would use what is called the tetragrammaton YHWH.It is a very ancient tradition that was carried over even into Bible translations were all but the NJB-&JB continued to follow that tradition.Second thing is because the name YHWH was never spoken no one really knows how The Name is pronounced. To say it incorrectly would not be honoring
Ha- Shem.Benedict knows this so he is not only making, in my mind,a smart scholarly approach but a good theological one also.😉

Its not clear to me why the Church has taken hundreds of years to make this this declaration.
they did not take hundreds of years, as already stated the Sacred names is not and has not been pronounced in the prayers of the Mass, the directive is about hymns and other usages, and only became an issue in the last few years with modern folk type hymns or lyrics very loosely based on psalms that do use the name, where in the scripture from which the reference was taken, it would not be pronounced.

Thanks. I didn’t realise that.

A few times in the OT - about 6500, give or take a few dozen 🙂 This includes its appearance in compounds: JHWH Elyon, J. nissi, J. tsidkenu, etc.

It’s regularly translated by LORD, or something of the kind.

As for the decision: I’m surprised - why bother ? I’mnot mad keen on using it, but what is the Christian objection to using it ?

Can the New Jerusalem Bible be used for readings at Mass? It does not use the traditional substitution, “the Lord.”

Greetings, fellow sisters and brothers in Christ. I love the song, Yahweh, You are Near. It usually brings a tear to my eyes. Is it ‘offensive’ now to even sing along to it? In place of the word, YHWH I could replace it with “Lord” or “Jesus”. But what about listening to it? Thank you.

The ban is on the use of the word in liturgy, not private devotion. The lyricist has already allowed the word to be changed so that the lyrics read “O Lord, I know you are near”. In fact, he made the change about 14 years ago when the compilers of the “Catholic Book of Worship III” requested it.

This is just a needed correction to the excesses of the 70’s and 80’s.

Also, and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong…but the “sacred tetragrammaton” wasn’t used “in place of” the word Yaweh…that’s just how the name of God was written in the vowel-less Hebrew script.

People are too fast and loose with God’s name in any spelling.

OF or EF, one of the elements I appreciate most (and one that is required by BOTH rubrics) is the bowing of the head at the name of Jesus.

Nothing is sacred anymore.😦

If YHVH deemed it so important to write his name in his inspired word. what man be he Pharisee, Bishop or Pope has the right or authority to change that. Exodus 3:15 If YHVH told Moses this, who is man to change that. Psalms 135:1-3 He is telling up to praise his name ’ for it is pleasant’ . If YHVH is telling us to use and praise his name, would he not be grieved if we substitute it for LORD or Adonai that is not his name. If the correct pronunciation of his name has been lost and the closest we have is Yahweh, Jahweh, Jehovah or Yehovah so what lets use that. What loving parent would chastise their infant child for calling them Dada or Mama when learning to communicate with their parents. would hearing us attempt to call his name not cause Jehovah to smile just as we did. Are we not all spiritual babes.
Why follow Tradition. What did Jesus say about the Pharisees of his day. Matthew 15:1-11 Why would anyone want to follow Jewish tradition when Jesus himself condemned it and them. They in the end rejected him.

Could someone show me some scriptures in the bible that says we should stop using his name for any reason ?
Also could someone show me where it says in the bible to replace his name with LORD?
Revelation 22:18-20

Ask yourself who would want to erase Yahweh’s name from our thoughts, tongue and books?
Job1 :6-7 Revelation 12:9

If you make a mistake will you rectify it?

Hi, we’re Catholics, not Protestants. We’re heirs to the entire legacy of Jewish tradition, and our understanding of the faith is not limited to a book. Even if it were, Jesus himself affirmed the continuity of Christianity with the Jewish legacy; please see Mt. 5:17 inter alia.

Also, the Bible does not forbid people from exercising additional reverence, deference and awe towards God. You seem to think that it’s inappropriate to show the Holy Name of God more reverence than the New Testament explicitly requests, but, with all due respect, that’s just a bizarre position, as well as being out of keeping with the Jewish heritage Jesus told us to acknowledge.

I totally agree with TANK65. When Yahweh appears THOUSANDS of times in the original scriptures, how could we ignore its use? God’s chosen people obviously used it whenever they referenced the one true God. With so many other gods being worshipped, it would only make sense that they used their pronunciation of YHWH. I believe that is it very presumptuous to take away the personal name of God, and am beginning to wonder to what end this is truly being done. How insulting it would be to refer to your dearest friends and family members with generic names, and how much more so for Yahweh who gave us everything! In the end, I believe the Bible, not the traditions of man.

If you’re going to pronounce the Name in your private devotions, make sure you’re pronouncing it right. The two transliterations are JHWH (German) and YHVH (English). The English pronunciation “Yahveh” is considered to be the best guess. Bear in mind that the Name is a Hebrew word, not an English word, and all four consonants are to be pronounced.
