How did your parish observe and celebrate the Year for Priests? Did you include special petitions in the Prayers of the Faithful? How did it benefit your parish?

We had petitions in the prayers of the faithful each week and a holy hour for vocations each month. We had a speaker come and talk about the priesthood at a breakfast and, even though the year for the priest is now over, next week at our annual parish golf outing and dinner we invited ALL the priests who have served at our parish or who grew up here to the dinner. We have about 25 priests coming and over 325 parishioners to come honor them.

We recited a prayer petition at the end of the prayers of the faithful every day. It was printed and glued on the front page of our missalettes. I have it memorized. Also, each weekend Mass, a petition to pray for our priests and included about 5 names of priests from our archdiocese and our pastor’s name was included in the prayers of the faithful. Every week, we would pray by name another group of priests.

congregation recited people’s prayer for priests after every Mass all year, special seasonal vocations presentations in all CCD and RE classes for adults, children and youth, most especially praying for our own pastor who was gravely ill for a few months, and new appreciation for the various priests who came into help during that time, which meant we had several different men visiting classes, participating in youth events and parish projects, seeing priestly life in action. Celebration of ordination anniversaries of our pastor and deacon come at the closing of the year so they were honored this week and there was a priest convocation this past week in the diocese.

Our priests encouraged the faithful to pray the indulgenced prayers (both plenary and partial). I noted more people and families staying after Mass to offer their prayers. I wish we did more, though.

Also, has anyone noticed an increase of vocations as a fruit of this year dedicated to priests?

THE BEAUTIFUL HANDS OF A PRIEST

We need them in life’s early morning, we need them again at its close;
We feel their warm clasp of true friendship, we seek them when tasting life’s woes.
When we come to this world we are sinful, the greatest as well as the least.
And the hand that makes us pure as angels is the beautiful hand of a priest.

At the altar each day we behold them, and the hands of a king on his throne
Are not equal to them in their greatness, their dignity stands all alone;
For there in the stillness of morning, ere the sun has emerged from the East,
There God rests between the pure fingers of the beautiful hands of a priest.

And when we are tempted and wander to pathways of shame and sin,
‘Tis the hand of a priest will absolve us – not once, but again and again;
And when we are taking life’s partner, other hands may prepare us a feast,
But the hand that will bless and unite us is the beautiful hand of a priest.

God bless them and keep them all holy for the Host which their fingers caress;
What can a poor sinner do better than ask Him, He Who chose thee to bless?
When the death-dews on our eyelids are falling, may our courage and strength be increased,
By seeing raised o’er us in blessing, the beautiful hands of a priest.
