Vatican City, Jun 21, 2007 / 09:57 am (CNA).- The Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff today announced that at 5.30 p.m. on June 28, eve of the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles, Benedict XVI will preside at the celebration of first Vespers in the basilica of St. Paul’s Outside-the-Walls.
During the ceremony, the Pope will proclaim a year especially dedicated to St. Paul, to mark the 2000th anniversary of the birth of the “Apostle of the Gentiles.”

According to the Vatican Radio Calendar, the year will run from June 29, 2008, to June 29, 2009. No other details were available about possible events during the year at the time of publication.

You are our good researcher here! I remember seeing something about this special feast day having an opportunity for us to gain a plenary indulgence, but I don’t know where I saw it, unfortunately. Do you have anything on it?
 
The Jubilee year will commence on June 28, 2008 and conclude on June 29, 2009.
The principal liturgical focus will be on the Basilica of St Paul in Rome. This Roman Basilica has a local connection, in that the great missionary and evangeliser, Bishop Salvado, died at the Monastery of the Basilica on 29 December 1900.
Pope Benedict is encouraging observance of the Pauline Year in local churches.
Those not in Rome can gain a Plenary Indulgence on the commencement and conclusion dates if they devotedly participate in a religious function or pious exercise held publicly in honour of St Paul on June 29, 2008 and on June 28, 2009.

The sick and those unable to leave their homes may gain the indulgence if they spiritually unite themselves to a Jubilee celebration in honour of St Paul, offering their prayers and suffering to God for the Unity of Christians.
The usual conditions for obtaining a Plenary Indulgence apply. They are:
  1. Praying the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed, cleansed by the Sacrament of Penance and nourished by Holy Communion.
  2. Prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father.
    A Plenary Indulgence may be gained once per day and may be applied to self or the deceased.
By the way what are folks here doing for themselves in order to enter the spirit of the year?

I have gleaned this website from Aust. Catholic Church Resources :…Year of St. Paul Website including UTube Video…yearofstpaul.com/…I am not too sure how much information is or is not on this website and this thread will be very happy to receive all and any information on The Year of St. Paul.👍 …I’m still trying to catch up to square one after having the computer switched off for a few days.

I remembered where I saw this after you posted the links, because I do subscribe to Zenit, and it would have been sent to my inbox. It seems I was mistaken in thinking the plenary was available on the kick-off date this Saturday, but I see it is for the actual feast in January, 2009.

Obviously you did not read my post above :crying:
The plenary is available on the commencement and conclusion dates if they devotedly participate in a religious function or pious exercise held publicly in honour of St Paul on June 29, 2008 and on June 28, 2009. Assuming of course that the proper conditions are observed.
 
Sorry, Fergal, I did read it, but it didn’t register because I don’t know of any way to “participate in a publicly held function” on that date. There was nothing at all in my diocesan newspaper which just arrived yesterday.

So instead, I made a mental note to check on it in January, 2009.

Does a liturgy that the Church celebrates on June 28th qualify as a publicly held function?

Well I would take it that since the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul is celebrated by the Church on a Sunday, your attendance at Holy Mass wold satisfy attendance at a publicly held function in their honour.

As far as I know, no feasts, other than those in honour of Our Lord are usually celebrated on a Sunday. Am I right folks??

Rats, shame I didn’t see this thread before now - it’s 10.45pm on Sunday night 😦

I hope God will see fit to grant me the indulgence if I spiritually join myself to a Mass or other celebration being held in St Paul’s honour (I wonder if EWTN is having a repeat of the Vespers they showed the other day?)
