Yes, Hallmark Christmas movies are cheesy

I wouldn’t consider it bad if a movie gets labelled as “escape”. I think CS Lewis responded to this kind of unfair criticism, by asking “Who would be most opposed to escape?”
The answer of course is jailers.
That’s the kind of society we have now.

Some people watch “Botched” and “Kardashians” and “Very Cavallari” and Christmas is coming. Now I feel guilty for not watching something more appropriate for the season like… THE HALLMARK CHRISTMAS MOVIES.

I love the Hallmark Christmas movies.

I love that my girls can watch them and I don’t have to worry about illicit sex scenes, bad language or immodest dress.

I love that they often have some moral or lesson for the main characters where they realize they may been living a little too much “of the world” and striving for worldly things without considering the importance of family, forgiveness, how to slow down and not strive after wealth but to recognize how you can more personally give of yourself to those around you.

I don’t mind that they all have a happy ending. We live in a “vale of tears” and bad/sad/horrific things happen. Some of the movies touch on this as well with children who have lost parents young, main characters who are ill or overcome illness, dysfunctional homes growing up, spouses who’ve passed away, messy divorces/bad ex. etc. Yes, things do end by being healed and cleaned up quite well from these things whereas sometimes in life they are not. But as Christians, what happens in this world is never the end of the story. Our perseverance through trials without losing faith and love for God, will bring about our salvation in eternity with Him and our true happy ending. All the joys we experience here on earth should remind us of our hope in our own joyful eternity, rather than as things we try to hold onto so much that we end up depressed when the sinful world we live in intrudes on them. Both the joys and trials of this life are always passing away but both are servants in getting us to the life we hope to have forever with God.

Enjoy the “happily ever after” fairy tales because they are symbolic of the end of the story for the faithful Christian.

My very much American Indian grandmother used to watch stuff like that, I think that people obsessing about race, causes racism.

Well said. Nihilism is the order of the day for some. For others, striving to be the best person you can be comes first. And watching anything that shows people at their best is worthwhile.

I guess it’s because I’m a guy, but I can’t stand those saccharine Hallmark movies.

I haven’t read the entire thread, so I may be repeating what someone else said. My main objection to the Hallmark movies is that they are completely secular. Except for the occasional glance at a Nativity scene or a passing verse from a Christmas carol, there is zero mention of the Reason for the Season.

Also, their connection with the real world is tenuous at best. In one that my wife was watching, a brand new car “threw a connecting rod”, stranding the heroine in a small town, where someone’s uncle was able to repair the engine, after waiting for parts so that the scriptwriters could give her back her Christmas spirit and have her fall in wuv. The movie that she was watching last night was set in a small North Dakota town that had an African-American sheriff. Ri-i-i-ight!

D

I despise those type of movies and that is all my fiance wants to watch when she comes over. And she says that she knows they are not very good but when I recommend a movie that I know IS good she still wants to watch a movie that she knows is not very good 🤨

It’s gonna be interesting during tv time once we are married lol

No offense, but Hallmark movies are stupefyingly boring to me.

Can’t stand romance movies.

I like the small town scenery, the nice domestic scenes, but that’s not enough to rescue these movies from being boring.

I have never watched a Hallmark movie, not for any season. Too many great films to watch in my spare time to waste time on cheese.

I’m female and I can’t stand them too.

Good thing I don’t have TV.

The cheese I like is the one that can be eaten, preferably with some wine and fruit.

But does everyone have to be a story about a poor damsel in distress who needs to be rescued?
The poor damsel in distress is also a beautiful woman who does not know she’s beautiful.

It’s too common it’s a trope.

I’ll admit I have watched and enjoyed them a few times. It always seems like the same story line, however. A 20 something woman is with a jerk. She meets a humble, nice guy. Finally she realizes the other guy is a jerk. Also, there are usually a couple other themes or dramas involved.

I just want to see a woman in the movie key some guy’s car outside a bar. Is that too much to ask? After all, it’s Christmas.

As if we didn’t have enough, Season 4 of Fuller House just came out.

Is Candice hurt?

To my knowledge, the Hallmark Channel never aired the first installment of the original Hawaii Five-O’s now-famous “‘V’ for Vashon” arc. However, it did show the other two installments.

Candace’s brother accidentally ran over her while they were out with family and friends. She’s out of the hospital and back home now.

Basically Hallmark Christmas movies are the chick equivalent of a Scott Adkins movie. Not particularly deep writing, but they can be fun to watch.

On the flip side, I know my little sister enjoys watching them (Hallmark, not Scott), so I want to spend some time with her, they are more or less a family friendly way to do it.
