I saw the first episode at Comic-Con, since I haven’t read the Sandman series I have no idea how faithful they are to it. But apparently Sandman takes place in a large number of areas whereas the show is going to be limited to him being in LA.
 
Don’t want to give too much away- the basic premise is Lucifer got tired of running hell and is just kind of hanging out. There are those who want him to go back. First show is almost a buddy-cop type thing along the lines of The Mentalist, mainly I think, as a way of introducing various characters and a bit of Lucifer’s motivations.
 
How do they make him a sympathetic enough character that people will watch, I wonder?

It’s difficult to depict pure evil - our imaginations falter. And if this is based on Neil Gaiman’s characters, then they won’t be pure evil. In Good Omens (an excellent book) by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, no one is 100% good or evil. The characters are, like us, a mixture.

I often take note how this is handled in gangster dramas, such as The Godfather or The Sopranos, since in real life gangsters are if not pure evil, then fairly despicable and predatory ones. On television or at the movies they often have some redeeming characteristics.
 
And completely unknown to me! I haven’t read a comic book in decades, nor have I seen any of the movies made from them. 🙂

They look like comic books to me! I ordered V For Vendetta from the library, not realizing it was a graphic novel. I think I made through 3 or 4 pages before giving up. I’m going to try the movie next. 🙂
 
I would object to the treatment of this subject…that makes evil look like non-evil. Just that simple…a lie.

And no, I won’t be watching a show where the devil is the good guy and blames his Dad. Sounds like a convenient way to attack God and get away with it among the low-info crowd. :mad:

Not to mention after years of the immoral trash that was promoted through “harmless” sitcoms like Freinds, Will and Grace, Modern Family, and the like, why is anyone surpised? And if those didn’t offend your sensibilities, why would a comedy about Satan?

I think the show is a silly idea because when I picture Satan or see a representation, I am reminded how base and pure evil he is, how much he hates me, and wanst me to suffer worse than nay human enemy, but, interestingly, I didn’t see the same sort of reaction to “Oh God, You Devil” with George Burns in the 1970s. Of course, I had barely been born at that point.

No, boycotts and protests only serve to draw attention and publicity, which would undoubtedly help the show’s ratings.

Sympathizing with the devil seems to be a subtle but growing trend in popular culture. Catholic film critic Stephen Greydanus has commented on that theme as well, in his article on the film Maleficent, a reverse take on Sleeping Beauty: “Maleficent, Rape, and Sympathy for the Devil.”

Um, no, not even close to the same thing. Today’s media portrays the devil as a sympathetic good guy who has been ill-treated by a big mean God and/or his followers. The devil is one of the main characters in Paradise Lost, but he is not portrayed as the “good guy.”

Yes, plus, they point out how much more fun it is to follow the devil, after all, you dont have all those pesky rules about abstaining from sexual things, drinking, drugging, etc etc. LOL its all about instant gratification with him.

Okay so I find it important to point out that he’s not a good guy. This version of Lucifer is one of DC Comics’ longest running villains, and has been voted in the top 100 villains multiple times.
He’s insidious and facetious and twisted and his worst aspect is he takes more pleasure and motivation from tricking humans into exposing their dark sides and embracing them than forcing them to do so himself.

He’s helping the cops cause it lets him expose the worst parts of humanity and have fun doing it. I feel like this is a kickass version of one of the most sadistically evil figures in any religious continuity besides Satan and Mara.
It’s a good portrayal of a truly evil villain.

That said I haven’t seen it yet, so I don’t know if it’s actually written with any style and competence or if it’s just another shock value driven golden-boy-wonder-hunk cop drama.
 
I suppose they worship Satan because they worship anything to do with darkness, death, evil, violence, sexual perversions, etc. Hopefully they won’t have too awful of a time when they really get there, really get to be with the real Lucifer, in the real hell.

Yes. For a supposedly immortal who has lived for a long, long time, he seems to have the mindset of an adolescent who has just discovered sex.
