Yesterday at Mass, our priest downplayed Mary’s role in the Church- IMO. Specifically, he said the woman giving birth in the reading from Revelation is not Mary, but represents the Chruch. Is this true?? He also went on to say that the Psalm had nothing to do with Mary, and that the Bible gives no indication of the Assumption (talk about being deflated during a homily- aren’t we supposed to be edified??). He did focus on Mary’s role as the perfect disciple of Jesus and how we should imitate that.

My question… is the woman laboring in Rev. Mary or not??

Peace and thanks for your insights.

Unfortunately Revelation is the hardest book in Scripture to understand. While we have traditionally held that the woman was Mary, it has also been held that the woman represented the Church. Neither position has been dogmatically defined, so one cannot say one vision is correct and the other wrong.

I had the privilege of doing a homily on this great feast. I told the community about both interpretations of the first reading. From the early church writings, I am sure the church ment this woman was Mary. I also used the famous quote by Fr. Max Kolbe: " If Mary is not your mother, then Jesus is not your brother."

God bless,

Our Priest said, make no mistake about it…the Woman with the Crown of Stars around her head IS Mary.

He gave a great homily…that without her Fiat…we would have no Jesus…that is how important a role she plays in the Church and assisting her son right up to today! 👍

He also called her the New Eve and Jesus the Second Adam…I havent that kind of talk unless it was EWTN! 🙂

Interesting I got a combination of both:
