Yes, although it’s not that old, about two years. It’s an origami elephant that I made when I was concerned about my pastor, who had unexpectedly had major life-saving surgery and was lying immobile in ICU. Why an elephant? Because Father’s the only person I know whose nativity set includes an elephant. I look for it every year when he puts the nativity out—a major production that takes an entire day to accomplish and takes up one third of a room when complete. So I absentmindedly put my hand on a sheet of origami paper and 25 minutes later I had an elephant. Why do I keep it? It was a turning point in our largely turbulent relationship. It really is true that people say and do a lot of things until their backs are against the wall. His being in that situation forced us both to lay our cards on the table. Since then, we each know where the other truly stands and that has helped matters immensely.
