Hello all,

I am new to Catholic Answers Forum, although I have lurked around a bit before joining. Anyway, my question is similar to some that I’ve seen on here, but I’ve been really struggling lately and thought I could use some help.

I grew up Catholic but have only recently come back into the Church. I never stopped believing, but I stopped following the commandments. One of the reasons why I ultimately came back to the Catholic faith was because of devastating health news–namely, that the doctors now say that I have less than 1% chance of ever conceiving a child. After many doctors telling me to use a donor egg to have a child, I realized how messed up the entire thing was and followed my soul’s cry back to the Church. I am happy to be back and practicing my faith, and leaning (slowly) to trust Jesus, no matter what ultimately happens with my future as a mother.

Anyway, my fiance has been nothing but supportive of my health problems and is willing to accept me, even if I can never bear him children. I am so grateful to have him. He is also a Catholic but is more lax about following the commandments–he is more of the mindset that God wants us to be happy.

My fiance and I have been together for four years and having premarital sex for most of our relationship. We are getting married in seven months. When I came back to the Church, I didn’t take Communion because I knew it would be wrong. It was hard to stop right away–however, I got my act together, talked with him, and went to confession. Going back to communion with a clean soul was amazing and we have not yielded to temptation ever since.

But here’s where I need help. First, when we were engaging in premarital relations, we were not using contraceptives because we were trying to have a baby (despite our small chance). I realize what a miracle it would be to have a baby, and I am struggling with giving up trying until the wedding, which is in seven months. Second, my fiance is having a really hard time with this. He is respecting my decision to stop relations until we are married, but I feel so awful sometimes knowing that he is unhappy.

So I guess I would like to have some reassurance that this is the right and Godly thing to do, because the world and my desire for a baby are constantly telling me to give in. Also, if anyone has any suggestions of ways to show my amazing and patient fiance love in a non-physical way, I’d really appreciate it because I feel guilty that I stopped this part of our relationship, even if its the right thing to do.

I can’t talk to anyone in real life about this because they all think that there is nothing wrong with premarital sex and I’m afraid that I might, out of guilt, resume having sex. Any advice, support, encouragement, scolding, is welcome…Thanks.

I’m not going to presume I have any valuable advice to give, so I just wanted to wish God’s blessings on you. It must be very hard knowing that the chance of conceiving a child is so small, but you are doing the right thing in following God’s will with regard to premarital sex, and doing so in your situation can’t be easy. Maybe you could look at moving the wedding date closer?

God bless you.

Yes of course, dear sister in Christ, you are doing the right thing. God has worked miracles, does work miracles, and while the 1% chance may or may not be correct, never fear that God loves you in so many miraculous ways. Do not lose hope.

Are you saying that you feel you have no time to lose in trying to conceive? But 7 mos. is no time at all to God. Did the doctors say, “If you want to have a baby, you must keep trying or the deadline will pass?” Somehow I can’t imagine that. Or is it that your biological clock is ticking and 7 mos. feels like an eternity to wait to resume trying for a baby? Probably that one…😦

My heart goes out to you. Please seek another medical opinion, and whatever happens, I am glad that you have returned with your whole heart!

Me and my wife are in a similar situation. We knew before marriage that we may not be able to have our own children. It was something I needed to come to terms with and took me a little while. Now, regardless of whether we have a biological child or not we are also going to adopt b/c it is something my wife has wanted to do for many years anyway. There are many children in the world who need loving families. Either way we plan to raise a family according to God’s plan. I would say follow the Church’s teaching and be open to accepting the mutual blessing of adopting a family-less child.

Thank you for the kind responses. I truly appreciate it.

The doctors did not say I must try to have a baby immediately. They said that I likely will never get pregnant, no matter when I try. It is just my own biological clock ticking and the possibility that one of these months could be the month I get pregnant, but I won’t because we are waiting until marriage. I think that is what I struggle with the most.

But again, thank you so very much for your responses. They give me encouragement I need to trust God’s plan and not my own, even though it is really hard. Blessings to all!

Prayers your way Be_Still.
Trust in God. He has a plan.
I have very good friends who were heartbroken because they were/are infertile. Then God’s plan for them was revealed as they were chosen to adopt a child.
I am not saying that is his plan for you. I guess I am saying just trust and watch Him work in your lives.
