Y'know what would really be cool if a game had catholic values?

So, I’m starting this thread. What I think would be great in a catholic-themed game was about the seven virtues and their opposites the seven deadly sins as well as playing as Angels as opposed to the Four Horsemen and Demons. I’d love to see how they put in all the virtues and their opposites in the game with the characters measured on how much their virtues have increased and the amount of virtues they have! That, and I’d like it to be an adventure game with a big open world like Skyrim or Breath of the Wild… Anyone else got two cents to spare on this? Also: Would love to see Marian themesand characters in there… provided they make Our Lady Modest and not looking immodest. I would also like to see Heaven portrayed in the game. I always imagined angels as armored winged soldiers 'cause it looks more cooler. (Apologize if I’m offending anyone in this thread, just my two cents and want to see how the discussion for this goes)

But… I like blowing tanks up in battlefield after a long day at work! :D:D:D

I guess about that much has been done in “Crusader Kings II” - ckiiwiki.com/Traits#Personality. However, there virtues and vices are “binary”. And it is not that certain if it would count as “a catholic-themed game”…

The problem with a lot of religious themed media in general, in my opinion, is that it really hits you over the head with it. Great literature/movies/games need a degree of subtlety and subtext. A lot of Christian media is the equivalent of a giant flashing sign screaming “CHRISTIAN STUFF RIGHT HERE EVERYONE DID YOU NOTICE?!”

This is the problem with allegories. They can be quite unsubtle.

A good game with Catholic values could take a hint from Tolkien’s style. The Christian themes are there but are quite subtle.

Agreed. I would honestly rather not have Christian games at all than have that garbage associated with my beliefs. 😃

I kind of feel that trying to stuff things with subtext and “hint-hint” theology tends to work out poorly when its being executed as a means of converting people or paying lip service to its obvious fan-base - which seems like its usually the case. If someone were to take religious themes and explore them maturely and professionally in a way that isn’t a mockery of art or intellect, then you could be on to something…

My issue is that whenever I encounter Christian media, it’s so heavy-handed and sterilized that it loses any sort of fun value. I think there could very well be great AAA games made with strong Catholic themes. But it would be important to not clean up the grit. I think a story about a character’s fall, and redemption is very ‘Catholic’ but the fall would have to be depicted as well to get the morality tale out of it. Otherwise it will have as much appeal as Barney the Dinosaur. Like, if the game was about a drug dealer seeing the light, people would complain that the main character is a drug dealer - and totally miss the message of the game on whole. Rather like how people protest Tom Sawyer, not realizing that the overall message of the novel is anti-slavery and anti-prejudice.

I also think it would be important to not step into clearly Christian stories that are already told. Because that turns important spiritual stories into mere entertainment. And I wouldn’t want to see something reverent turn crass… Like, I don’t know. The Virgin Mary having to crush serpent’s heads to rack up points. That is a sacred image to a lot of people, and I wouldn’t want that exploited in a game.

👍

It’s not specifically Catholic (and given its approach to LGBT issues, some of y’all would probably see it as Anti Catholic), but Dragon Age Inquisition is a surprisingly nuanced meditation of faith and organised religion.
