And the “emptying of the mind” has never been a Christian value…that I know of.

God bless,
Aaron
In order to have pleasure in everything
Desire to have pleasure in nothing.
In order to arrive at posessing everything
Desire to possess nothing.
In order to arrive at being everything
Desire to be nothing
In order to arrive at knowing everything
Desire to know nothing.
In order to arrive at that wherein thou hast no pleasure
Thou must go by a way which thou hast no pleasure.
In order to arrive at that which thou knowest not
Thou must go by a way thou knowest not.
In order to arrive at that which thou possessest not
Thou must go by a way that thou possessest not.
In order to arrive at that which thou art not
Thou must go through that which thou art not.

St John of the Cross

Prayer for Union with Jesus

Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.

I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.

I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.

When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.

Thanks for that info…but it still doesn’t suggest an emptying of the mind 😃 You see, God should fill the mind. And He is pure existence. Thus, while we may need to detach from many things, the one SURE thing, that is the pure existence, God, should never be emptied. And Yoga taken to its intended ends even “destroys” God, so to speak (and I know God cannot be destroyed).

St. John of the Cross had visions which came upon him. That I know of, none of the mystics simply sat around seeking visions, but the visions came upon them/

As far as the seriousness of this thread, some of those reading need to take it seriously and some don’t, and that is because of the inconsitency in Yoga practice through the US (and world). Thus, some get “just exercise” while others get “emptying of the mind.”

God bless,
Aaron

I don’t disagree with any of what you just said, Aaron. Probably the best advice to a Christian that is interested in yoga is to seek a class that is designed to be a good exercise. It is probably a great time to pray too, since there would be few distractions.

An interesting read on things of this nature would be “Ransomed from Darkness” by Moira Noonan. She has recenty appeared on the show “The Abundant Life”

Maybe we can clear up this Yoga business right now. Yes, there are eastern religious practices called yoga that are deeply boiund up with a pagan spirituality of one sort or another. That is “a whole nother ball of wax.” Yo don’t even want to go there.

Yoga itself is nothing more than a series of body postures, stretches, etc. It will surprise many people that quite a few exercises and stretches that people have been doing for years are actually “yoga poses.” The poses and stretches and exercises themselves have nothing wrong or evil. In fact, they have been proven to be of great value for fitness or therapy and the like. There are books on “Christian yobga” for those who want to add a spiritual dimension to it. My Benedictine monastery teaches classes on Christian yoga. The best and safest way to approach it is to get from your library or a bookstore a book or two on yoga exercises. Disregard completely all the spiritual stuff and just do the exercises themselves. You’ll be safe spiritually (especially if you are dopnig something likepraying the Divine Mercy chaplet or praying and mediatating on the rosary mysteries or some other Catholic praying).

Hope this helps all those of you who have had problems with this.:amen:

This clears up nothing. Actually it clouds up the facts.

The fact is that yoga, while being a form of exercise, was created and used for spiritual reasons.

Yes, I have hear some say that the spirituality can be removed from it, but I do not know so I will not try it. Just as some say that transcendental meditation can be “cleaned up” and used to benefite christians. I doubt that very much.

The exercises of yoga were designed with a specific intent in mind, even if you remove the outwardly spiritual nature, does that change the fact that those who have used it in the past did so to open themselves up for spiritual things? Not in my opinion.

I would say that pilaties is a much better idea.

ByzCath & Challenger are on the money with this one.

The purpose of Yoga is to reach the Budhist and Hindo state of Nirvana by releasing a certain form of energy at the base of the spine called the “Kundalini”. Hindo’s and Yoga practicioners believe that once this happens by this “energy” passing up the spine and culminating at the crown of the head, “enlightenment” is reached by the person.

This is done through the “breath work” in Yoga. Your local Yoga centre willl probably not know this but the demonic spirit of Kundalini controls Yoga.

Doesn’t sound very Catholic eh…

I have experienced the “kundalini” and I did not invite it. I was involved in another New Age practice called “Rebirthing” which takes the breathwork from Yoga. My expereince with it was in the middle of the night

READ THIS
Refer: kundalini-gateway.org/ksigns.html

My understanding from a Christian perspective is that the Kundalini is not an awakening of psychic energy but rather an encounter with a demonic. This theory more explains my experience as the energy force appeared to come from outside of myself rather than generated from within. It also left or exited the same way upon my command. i was extremely scared. The Kundalini was definately not generated from within me nor put to rest within me as suggested by the new age articles I have read on the subject.

I believe the Catholic Church recognises the “Kundalini”, not as an internal energy source that is released from within the person but that the Kundalini is actually a demon and the process just described is a process of demonic possession.

Someone on this thread made mention that no one is inviting any spirit during Yoga. An invitation is not needed. I did not invite it at all. My encounter cane from delving into a related new age practice called “Rebirthing” which derives its breathwork from Yoga, the key to the Kundalini.

Stay away from Yoga and from Rebirthing. I urge all those involved with Yoga to do their own unbiased research on Yoga and not be driven by your own pleasent expereinces.

I have asked several different times, but have not received a satisfactory answer. Is there an official Church position on yoga? Just tonight, I saw an article in the paper about our local Catholic hospital offering pregnancy yoga classes…
Hmmm, my impression is that practised as a physical exercise…its okay (though why not just pray the Rosary while jogging  ) However practised as a spiritual method… 😦

As I mentioned in my post above, I was not participating in the spiritual nature of it. I was just doing the breath work as instructed. This was enough to open the doors. You cannot seperate the the physical exercise from the Buddhist / Hindu spiritual intent of Yoga. It’s like saying: I’m going to Mass but I’m not going to pray. The grace of conversion still seeps into the soul. It is the same deal with Yoga only in reverse.

I’m not so sure about this. Recently on CAL I heard the special guest state that YES you can sell your soul to the devil. The good news being, of course, that you can get it back. 🤷
Greetings Nickybr38,

There are two camps on this one. For now I believe that one cannot sell their soul the devil, in time that can change due to my experiences and studies of demonology.

I do have a question, would you mind linking me relevant information. I am open to seeing the other side. You can do this via Personal Message because I do you 7aneapi9tneawdne to muread.0D
