Although the language is the same, the implication seems to be different. An illustration of this is found in Matthew rather than Mark (Matthew 14:33) when Jesus is walking on water and catches **Peter when he doubts, **begins to sink, and yells Save me! Afterwards, they get on the boat, the wind dies down, and the people worship him while saying say Truly You are the Son of God. Although it would be a stretch to equate these people to the next chapter, it is interesting that there we have a juxtaposition of Jesus saying In vain do these people worship me and These people honor me with their lips but not in their hearts. He says Hear and understand before saying a parable, and yet still Peter has to ask Jesus to explain the parable! Peter doesn’t understand the parable, yet right before hand everyone was saying You are the Son of God. It is hard to comprehend that they would understand what “Son of God” meant yet not understand a simple parable when being told to “understand” before saying it. Even more interesting is that Peter says You are the Christ, the son of the living God, which is said to have been revealed by God the Father to him, right before Jesus rebukes him for his expression of non-acceptance of his death and says Get behind me, Satan! To top this off, we have Peter who doesn’t even know what he’s saying (Matthew doesn’t say this but the others do) a little afterwards during the Transfiguration when he offers to build tents when seeing Elijah and Moses with Jesus. There’s also something strange, almost in reverse if you will, about Peter’s testifying to Jesus’ being the “Son of the living God” as being revealed by the Father just a moment ago, yet there’s a revelation of these words afterwards on the mountain from the cloud.

Re: the same language

yes the apostles in the boat in that first example, call Jesus son of God. what’s interesting, Jesus didn’t say after their statement, STOP the presses. I’m changing all of your names to ROCK for what you have just said.

While it was a similar statement that Peter would say later, Peter added you are the Christ to the acknowledgment of Son of God.

But one could also ask, as we often see on these forums, is it the phrase Peter gave at Caesarea Philippi, that caused the name change and receiving the keys, or is it Peter personally? I’ve argued both rather than make this an either / or. Even if Peter’s knowledge wasn’t perfect.

As for Peter wanting to save Jesus his friend from death, That to me is not strange. That’s what friends do. What was odd, is Jesus response. “Get behind me Satan”. Recognizing Jesus knows that Peter doesn’t know everything, so was Jesus talking to Peter at this point, or Satan who was also present and Jesus could see him, as he was attacking Peter at this point?

I ask it that way because Jesus told the apostles later, Satan was allowed to sift THEM the apostles like wheat. Which means Satan has been sifting them from the beginning.

Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen στήρισον your brothers.”

So

1. Did Jesus confirm one of THEM is the greatest? Yes
   2. Did the one who is greatest lobby for the position he received? No. He was selected
   3. Did Jesus confirm one of THEM would rule over the others? Yes
   4. Did Jesus promise to pray especially for this one who would rule over the others AND entire kingdom after all the sifting by Satan? Yes
   5. Who is this man who is to rule and have primacy, etc etc over the entire Church? Peter.

Not only did Jesus settle their argument, we see who’s causing all the problems we see.

It’s important to know, they (the apostles) like us, still don’t know with complete clarity, what’s coming in the next moment of time…

All this illustrates a certain strange “revelation” met with a non-comprehension to not even knowing what is being said, and it raises issues as to the distinction of what words actually signify and for whom throughout the Gospels.
