You Are Worthy...

Ok, I hope that I can put this into the right words… This is something that has been bugging me for a while so I wanted to get everyone’s opinions before I drive myself mad for no good reason!

I hear several christian songs that have the phrase ‘You are worthy’ whether of my love, praise, or whatever… I should mention that this is sung from us to God… I have a problem with this and I don’t know if its founded or not but the reason I have issue with this is because anytime I sing this I always get the feeling like ‘who am I to tell GOD that He is worthy of anything that I have?’ I don’t know if this makes sense but I just feel like I am so insignificant that telling God that He is worthy of my love and praise is like saying that there is a chance that He is not. Does this make sense? Probably not…

Of course there is no chance that He is not worthy.
But there is a chance that we will fail to know that He is worthy, or that we will fail to admit this and give Him the praise that is His due.
Saying that He is worthy does not mean that we imply He might not be: it means that we “confess with our mouths” what is in our hearts. We give Him praise because we know He is worthy. :clapping: We give Him worship because we know He is worthy.:dancing:

I agree - it’s US reminding OURSELVES that God is worthy of everything we got to give him!

And we are worthy too, or have that capacity, both by your God/gods’ and by mortal ethical standards. I too am so moved by music, and some of the most amazing music has been made to glorify faith, and in that sense, I am no stranger to you, nor are you to me.

I am new here in a sense, and I have never been a theist, but perhaps we have some things in common in our emotional formations, I truly hope. When we geel lifted by song, who is to say we are any different? That is your angelic grace, and my sheerly, transcendently human joy – if there is a difference, when music moves me, I do not care about that, if I ever do.

My feeling is that when we sing that God is worthy, we aren’t telling Him anything new to Him but we are letting Him know that we acknowledge His greatness. He doesn’t need our praise but we need to praise Him at every opportunity. We must keep the lines of communication open at all times. He is always ready to communicate with us but we oftentimes shut Him out. When we sing “You are Worthy” we are speaking to Him, acknowledging Him and praising Him.

I didn’t say that this was a rational or even founded response to the phrase ‘You are worthy’. Only that I feel so insignificant when it comes to addressing God who am I to declare that He is Worthy?

Worthy of what? My love? That doesn’t amount to much since He is the God and Creator of the universe. He created Love, what I have is just a miniscule part of that… My praise? I have nothing to say that He hasn’t already heard. What can I say that will show Him how deeply I need Him? What will I do to make up for the wonderful things He has done for me?

Like I said, it’s not rational… but it is something I think about and one of the few things that I cannot reconcile by reading the passages above or ones like them. Those who uttered those words felt as if their praise and admittance that their love and affection meant something or enough to God to make a difference… Sometimes, I do not have this…

I agree with the first couple of posters. I think it is us reminding ourselves who God is and who we are in relation to Him.

I need to be reminded daily and be put in my place on a regular bases

Then ask Jesus for it.
Please don’t think I’m being flippant or facetious.
If you lack this, and it interferes with your ability to praise God, then ask Him for what you need.
I have asked Jesus for such things and been granted them.

I believe the songs are trying to convey that He alone is worthy to receive our praise and worship…“Worthy is the Lamb…”

In Revelation “John” records that a question was asked…“Who is worthy to open the book…” and he began to weep…until Someone said…“Do not weep, for the Lamb is worthy…”

You are wrong, when you say you have nothing to say, has He heard you say that you love Him ?

We dont tire of that why would He??? How is that nothing to say?? Its all you can say.

By acknowledging Him and studying His Word and Praying you **are **showing Him how deeply you need Him.

Also, the scriptures this statement comes from were written in polytheistic time, when there were a lot of deities around that were not worthy of honor and praise. It was/is a way to acknowledge that this God you know is in a class far above others. Worthy, not merely demanding, of praise.

It makes very good sense ​

1. Of course God is
2. Our insignificance (& worse) does not make Him any less worthy
3. This ascription of praise is paid to the Lamb in Revelation 5 - the & saints in Heaven are no less His creatures than we on earth are
4. If people love one another, they tend to say so - they don’t remain silent.
5. How many people don’t express their appreciation of a sunset, or of some other beautiful, or excellent, or praiseworthy thing ? God is beyond all praise - He is excellently worthy of infinite praise for every possible reason: so how can we be silent ?
6. There is constant praise of Him in the Psalms - the name of the book in Hebrew even means “Praises”: & that was before the Coming of Christ, which has given us reasons to praise God no OT writer ever knew.
7. IMHO, our praise of God is the expression & fulfilment of a human need - it is something that we need to do, just as we need to eat or drink. What’s the alternative to praising the true God ? Idolatry of some kind - whether of fame, money, sex, learning, health, country or whatever. Far better - surely ? - to get all worked up about the praiseworthiness of the Living God, than to serve idols. Besides, we become like what we love & attend to - if we do not love the true God, we will be left with shams & nonsense like those idols, or others.
8. If the praise of individuals were of no importance - why has God bothered to make those individuals, & to give them His grace ? God is Love (we have 1 John 4 to tell us that) - & love is given to individuals. It has to be, if it is to be personal & to mean anything. ##

Suppose you overheard your husband or boyfriend saying to someone else “Of course I love her; she knows that! So I don’t have to say it out loud!” That would be a foolish statement for him to make. He should tell you he loves you because you want to hear it; but he should also tell you he loves you because of the effect saying it has on him. Looking you in the eye and saying he loves you is a powerful moment in the ongoing development of his relationship with you.

Likewise, acknowledging to God that He is worthy / glorious / magnificent / etc. is an important part of our ongoing relationship with Him. By saying he loves you (assuming he means it), your husband or boyfriend becomes a better husband or boyfriend; by praising God and acknowleding His greatness (assuming we mean it), we become better Christians.

He wants your praise, because He loves you.
Do you not know that He inhabits the praise of His people? He rejoices in our praise.
When you give Him sincere praise, you give Him joy.

Even the dimmest candle can say to the supernova “You’re really bright!” The supernova’s brightness doesn’t depend on the candle’s statement; and the supernova isn’t insulted by the candle’s comment.

I agree with you: Duh, of course He’s worthy! And of course we aren’t. But it’s still okay for us to say so. You aren’t sitting in judgment of God; you’re merely acknowleding the facts. And God, Who is Truth, cannot possibly fault you for speaking truth.
