You CAN'T say Marijuana is bad and Alcohol is good

Actually the bigger problem we have now is that people think the government has to control the border and create plethoras of laws to maintain, in other words the state would pretend to supplant God. This has failed and will continue to fail as a government and it’s laws are only a reflection of the values of it’s citizens, or lack thereof.

In fact this topic is a perfect example of the lack of values of Americans because many supposed Christians would promote an illicit drug that would cause their fellow man to suffer, in direct conflict with the Bible. We have become a nation that would try to juggle being Christian and godless values and use legalism and consensus as justification.
You are aware that Canada has much stricter border policies than the USA. Also , their marijuana laws are far, far more relaxed than those of the US. The best marijuana now comes from the North. So what is to be said for the values of the Canadians?

With a clear agenda like yours it would be difficult to see the ultimate consequences.

Nonetheless, the Bible and the catechism are crystal clear regarding this matter, using illicit drugs hurts society and our fellow man.

I do have some agendas. Mostly the same as yours. I just don’t see how the Canadians of the North and their society have suffered from their own marijuana production and use.

First, not all consequences are apparent in a matter of a couple of years. Nonetheless, since the principal of legalizing marijuana is based on irresponsible individualism and rebellion it can never be good. The CC recognizes this and of course rightly opposes it.

Sometimes even if we can’t understand the purpose of Church beliefs we need to be a good soldier and toe the line. Also, God established obedience as important with His covenant with Israel and has long been a tradition in the CC.

This thread is rather confused. Smoking one joint is a mortal sin. Alcohol abuse is also a mortal sin.
Drinking one beer or one glass of wine is not a sin. That’s all that matters really.

I agree. One joint generally equals about a 12 pack, or a quarter bottle of hard liquor as far as ‘intoxication’ is concerned.

…one very small puff is considered moderation.

I went through a whole quart of Scotch before I was done reading this thread. I can assert that alcohol in the form of single malt is good.:D:D:D

Although IANAD, I’d say that yes, MJ is a drug.

It’s used as one. Folks do not smoke it because they love the taste or smell; they do so to get the mind/body effect. That’s a drug.

Alcohol has drug effects, but drinkers (ie, wine buffs) aren’t always seeking them, but rather the taste, bouquet, etc.

Likewise, tobacco, especially in its non-cigarette forms, is often consumed for taste etc.

There’s a difference.

With tobacco, there is further the issue that except for “secondhand smoke” and fires caused by its negligent use, tobacco affects only the somatic state of its user. The Church has never been in the business of requiring the healthiest behavior of its faithful.

This is unfair to say. Someone can knock back a cheap vodka or enjoy a nice merlot, just as someone can burn some brick weed or blaze a delicate and beautiful looking nugget. But it is no sin in itself to seek the effect of a drug, whether caffeine or nicotine or alcohol or THC, so long as one does not unjustly surrender one’s free will and reason.

My wife and I had a conversation about it last night, based on the new Colorado law. She surprised me when she said that if MJ were legal in our state she would try it.

I said, “Really?” She is generally more conservative than I am.

She is prone to migraines, and as a result has to avoid alcohol, chocolate, and most foods with preservatives. She can’t eat wheat because it wrecks her digestive system. In other words, there’s a lot of fun stuff she can’t have anymore. Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, Hershey’s Kisses, hot chocolate…Just a couple sips of wine will land her in bed with a migraine.

So she’d be willing to try pot just in case it might be a pleasure she can tolerate.

I wouldn’t, because I have asthma. However, I will admit to having tried it twice, and I inhaled both times. I have no idea what the effects were, because I was very, very intoxicated on inexpensive, widely available, legally purchased liquid substances both times.

I wonder if pot leaves you with a hangover? I kinda doubt it.

Both marijuana and alcohol are bad for our heath. The difference is that, alcohol is consumed majority of the people in this world at least once. A vast number of people who consume alcohol are not addicts while most of the people who smoke marijuana are addicted to it. There are many people who consume alcohol in a very small amount and so it does not cause them any major health problems. Alcohol is even supplied for parties and get together’s. But marijuana is used by people only for the purpose of getting high. Smoking marijuana is considered to be an signal that the person is a drug addict. It isn’t supplied at parties and no one uses it just to know how it feels or out of obligation. That is why marijuana is considered more dangerous.

So in Colorado, your dentist, your doctor, your auto mechanic might now be high while working on you or your car.

Hey, if that is what the citizens want, that’s democracy in action!

One more thing that they differ from Texas on.

No different than alcohol - I would rather the pot head fix my car than a drunk - but I would hope people could wait till after work- you can be fired just like coming to work drunk - company’s have rule and will enforce them - it will be taken care of - what do you think employers are idiots.

I worry that the mechanics may take smoke breaks while working on my brake job.

My husband works for the electricity board and they have mandatory drug and alcohol testing for workplace health and safety. You can have a few drinks the night before work and the substance has completely left your system by the morning. Completely unaffected in the work sense. Whereas if you smoke a few joints the night before, the drug can stay in the bloodstream affecting the cognitive and motor function for up to a week.

I guess there’s a chance of that, just as there’s a chance that he’s drunk. Intoxicated is intoxicated.

Alcohol, marijuana, prescription meds…all can cause serious impairment, all can be physically and/or phsycholgically addictive, and all should be used with caution and moderation.

As for the examples above regarding car mechanics and doctors, I wonder how many of us have had those same concerns about prescription meds. Pain killers, anti-depressants, sleep aids…yeesh! I have seen enough people on legal drugs that can barely function as a side effect to the medication or the new med adjustment period to say I wouldn’t want them working on my car or my body. No one should be working on any kind of drug if the drug affects physical coordination or cognition.

As somebody who used to smoke cannabis for 4 years and used to think it was harmless, I’ll explain why I’d like to disagree!

In Europe we mix cannabis with tobacco, so it has all the risks of cigarettes mixed into a joint as well but even when smoking cannabis alone through a bong or pipe, it still has mental health issues. Cannabis had this addictive illusion of a peace of mind which wasn’t always peaceful, sometimes it would make me paranoid, not paranoid in the sense of wearing a tin foil hat in case the government is trying to read my mind but paranoid in a different way. I’d sit there freaking, my heart racing and felt as if my brain was floating if that makes sense? Sometimes it felt like my brain was lying on the comfiest pillow in the world, I enjoyed it though, I enjoyed it because it was different, I couldn’t go through a day without feeling like this even if the high only last 5 minutes. It leaves you feeling like you’re smarter than you were, like you’ve discovered some profound spiritual insight but it’s wrong, it’s a false thing. It makes you shrink inside yourself, it is desirable in a certain way and that’s probably why people do it but eventually, you can’t function in the real world without getting high and at the same times, probably killing brain cells.

Honestly, ask somebody to quit smoking cannabis. They’ll say they’ll do it tomorrow or that it isn’t addictive at all and they basically won’t give it up, because they’re addicted. I remember going through months of insomnia when I gave it up because all the problems I attempted to hide, they came back to me because they were always there in the first place, I just found a way of ignoring them and brushing them to the side.

I definitely put my faith in a plant back then and it betrayed me in the end with a promise of feeling good but then when it was gone, I felt bad again. I know Rastafarian’s smoke it religiously but it’s part of their religion, unless you’re a Rasta or unless you’re even prescribed it medically which very few people are because very few places in the world accept this medically, there’s absolutely no point in it unless you’re attempting relive the glory days of liberal hippies!

An act against reason is a sin. Marijuana is a sin in a rather direct way since it is a low end hallucinogen. Even moderate use of marijuana fundamentally alters reasoning in a negative way (though perhaps there are some medical issues a person may have that this may not be true). Hence, Marijuana is wrong since it generally admits of no moderate use against reason.

Alcohol on the other hand does not necessarily impair reason just because it is a depressant. Only immoderate consumption would seem to do so. A relaxant can be used for good purposes just like a stimulant. Since alcohol admits of moderate use it can be called a ‘good’ when used.

For a more utilitarian argument, marijuana seems to have the risk of permanently altering one’s brain for the worse. Of the physical maladies one can get, there is not much worse than harm to the brain (of course alcohol can too, but typically only in excess).

You should probably actually read up on the effects of Marijuana. It is not an hallucinogenic.
