So. I’ve been getting lots of “Oh the boy! Now you are done, right?” comments from…everyone.

I usually just say “no, why would we be?”

Do you guys have any witty (not rude- most of these people are genuinely well-meaning) responses?

I usually just say, “We’ll see what the future holds!” or “We take our kids one at a time and try not to think about what’s next while we’re still enjoying an infant. We’ll see where we are in a couple of years, though!”

Not very witty, but true.

Ann Landers used to pass along this response to those kinds of questions…ask another question!

“Why would you ask that?”

It really works!!!

do they mean that if it is a girl you’d keep trying for a boy?
why are boys of higher value?
aren’t they all precious?
why would having a boy represent the achievement that you need no longer have more -

this line of thinking bothers me

ever seen that show with the Duggards i think is the name, 19 kids and counting !

people could use them as an example and retort with nope, i wana be on a tv show of my own one day so i hope to have a lot of kids.

Not necessarily. I “got my girl” according to some when #3 was a girl.

I just say, “No, we still enjoy making them.”

We have three grown daughters.Thirty years ago when I was pregnant with our third daughter(back then,we didn’t have ultrasounds done ,so the sex was a unknown until the birth).I was asked ad nauseaum,“Are you trying for a boy?” We weren’t however when our daughter was born, first thing out of my husbands mouth was"Another girl" sigh…

That’s happened to us times (we had a girl then a boy, one and one… then 2 and 2… and now we are getting ready to have 3 and 3 if the ultrasound tech was right…
The first time I was caught off guard was when I was talking with the ladies that went to daily Mass after finding out that we were expecting a boy, and then they asked if we were done… I did not expect it from them so I said: No, I’m Catholic!..
Anyways… I cannot think of anything funny, but I always say: “We are open to more” and if they look at me like I am crazy sometimes I add “so far they have come one at a time” and add a big smile :), maybe then say something positive about my kids or family. I don’t know what else to say.

I think this pregnancy is a girl. I have two boys and I am bracing myself for this. My plan is to act really dumb. “What do you mean? Why would you think that? I don’t understand.” And just act as dumb as possible. “Oh, is that why people only have two kids? That’s so weird! Are you serious? That’s so sad! They must not trust God.”

I thought of it as maybe they already had a girl or more than one girl, but didn’t have a boy yet. A lot of people assume that it is normal to stop having kids once you have both sexes (unless you stop before, because you have 2 or 3 and are not willing to “risk it” again.)

I have an Aunt and Uncle who had wanted a boy. Only they had 5 girls first. The sixth was finally a boy. I’d hate to think of what might have happened if they kept having girls.

I don’t think it’s that.

More likely the “at least one of each” idea.

What do you mean?

Well, I had a friend who said he was done after his first kid. Then a few years later I go over his house, and he’s shoves an ultrasound picture in front of me. So I say “I thought you were done having kids.” He says “well I wasn’t done having sex!”

It absolutely gets to me when people make a distinction between boys and girls.

Coming from a Lebanese family I’m in constant contact with the old school thinking of having a boy to carry the name etc…This doesn’t come from my immediate family, just from family friends and some cousins.

When my wife was pregnant with all 3 of our children some of these old school people would come up and say “Congrats, hopefully it’s a boy” …

As quick as anything I would reply “To cheese you off, I hope it’s a girl…”

grrrrrrrrrr that attitude gets to me…

I’m known for being a bit blunt in my family…I actually that can be a blessing sometimes… 😃
